MALDI Biotyper Troubleshooting Guide

Calibration/Validation Issues

n Check the expiration dates of the Standard Solvent (formerly known

as Organic Solvent), BTS and Matrixn Ensure proper preparation of reagents utilizing Bruker's Instructions for Usen Spot newly prepared BTS and Matrixn Perform a Source Cleaning (if using a microflex LT/SH)n If issues persist - Call Service to request a routine optimization

If failed Validation, run Manual Calibration using flexControl software in RUO mode (shown in image below)

Vacuum Issues If in CA mode, run will abort. Log onto RUO mode and check vacuum pressure

Go to flexControl>Status tab>Details>Vacuum tab>Gauges> Source High>Pressure (red light indicates a failure)

n RED LIGHT:Eject the target to OUT positionOpen the lid and remove all debris by cleaning the O-ring area, the black O-ring, and the lid with a lint-free Kim Wipe (do NOT use alcohol or any

other chemicals!)

n Vacuum Pressure

Performing an Automated Ion Source Cleaning

n Start an automated Source Cleaning to clean Ion Source (recommended weekly)n flexControl>Status tab>Details>Processor Subsystem tab>Service

Information>Start NOTE: Target may be in IN or OUT position to begin the cleaning n Wait until Source Cleaning is complete (~20 minutes); once complete

HINT: See “Vacuum Issues“

a message will appear on the screenn If a Source Cleaning error message appears check your vacuum

"Error Call Service" Message Before contacting Service, try the following steps:

n Close MBT CA Software Close flexControl Software (If logged in as TOF-User) Re-Open flexControl Software (If logged in as TOF-User) Re-Open MBT CA Software Re-Start the Run

n Vacuum PressureGo to flexControl>Status tab>Details>Vacuum tab>Gauges>Source High>Pressure

Reboot the Microflex May be necessary in order to re-establish PC connection or to fix software freezes

Close all Bruker software windowsShut down the PC using "Start" menu => "Shutdown"Turn the key in the front of the instrument to vertical position OR toggle the orange switch in the backWait 15 seconds or until all of the lights on the front panel have turned OFF Turn the key to horizontal position or toggle the orange switch and wait until all the lights on the front panel stop flashingTurn on PC using power button located on the PC towerRe-launch Bruker software

n Vacuum PressureGo to flexControl>Status tab>Details>Vacuum tab>Gauges>Source High>Pressure

Shut Down the Microflex May be necessary in order to prepare for a scheduled power outage at your facility

Close all Bruker software windowsShut down the PC using "Start" menu => "Shutdown"Turn the key in the front of the instrument to vertical position OR toggle the orange switch in the backOnce power is restored, turn the key to horizontal position or toggle the orange switch and wait until all the lights on the front panel stop flashing Turn on PC using power button located on the PC tower

HINT: Time to restore vacuum is dependent on how long the system was shut down

Software Freeze

n Try to close the Biotyper software and flexControl software by clicking the X on the top right corner and then reopen the programs n If the software is still frozen open Task Manager

HINT: Move mouse to the bottom of the screen and right click OR press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Select Start Task Managern Select the Processes tabn Close the following programs (this will depend on what programs are currently

open and frozen) and then reopen the programs� BiotyperRTC.exe / BiotyperCA.exe (depending on mode)� TOFControl.exe � FlexHal.exe

Local Host Error

n Contact your IT department and ask them to unblock Port 8080, 8180, 8280 and 61616 on the network’s Firewall

n Problem persists - Call Service

WebEx Setup

n Open Internet Explorern Go to bruker.webex.com (do not enter www.)n If website is NOT reached, contact IT department to check internet connectionn Answer the Preference questions according to your time and location n Enter the meeting number you receive from your Support Engineer and

click JOINHINT: save to Favorites

Misaligned Spot Position

n Reteach the targetn flexControl>Sample Carrier tab>click Advanced>click Teach…n Click Go for First positionn By clicking the mouse in the camera view, center the cross hair on the target spotn Continue to Second Position and Third Position n Click Save as Default Teaching and OK

High Temperature Error

n Close all the Bruker software on the PC n Reboot the microflex HINT: See "Reboot the microflex" n Problem persists- Call Service

Detector Check Message

n Clear the message by pressing "Clear"

UPS Blinking Lights or Beeping

n Check main power to UPS Note: UPS required 110Vn Make sure ONLY the Computer and the microflex are plugged

into the UPSn The Printer should NOT be plugged into the UPS
