Objectives !  List all of the major body systems and their

main purpose.

!   Identify which major organs make up the body systems.

!  Compare and contrast the general anatomical location of major organs (Anatomical Reference Terms.)

Organ Systems !  An Organ System is a series of organs

that work together for a common purpose.

!  Each organ system is made up of specific organs and tissues that are specifically designed for the job that they do.

!  Each tissue is made up of specialized cells that are unique to that system.

The Major Organ Systems !  There are 10 major

organ systems: !  Skeletal System !  Muscular System !  Integumentary

System !  Circulatory

System BOLD are systems that we

will dissect.

!  Respiratory System

!  Digestive System !  Excretory System !  Nervous System !  Endocrine System !  Reproductive

System

Skeletal System !  Purpose: To

provide structure for an organism.

!  Components: Bones, cartilage and ligaments (connective tissue.)

Muscular System !  Purpose: To

provide movement for the organism as well as for materials within the organism.

!  Components: Muscles and tendons (connective tissue.)

Integumentary System !  Purpose: To

provide a barrier to protect the organism from the outside world.

!  Components: Skin (the largest organ of the body), hair and nails.

Circulatory System !   Purpose: To act as a

transport service to the cells of the body, delivering oxygen and food.

!  Components: Heart, blood, and blood vessels.

!  Note: The circulatory system includes the Lymphatic system (body fluid regulation.)

Respiratory System !  Purpose: To

exchange gasses with the circulatory system.

!  Components: Lungs, nose, mouth, & diaphragm.

Digestive System !  Purpose: To

physically and chemically break down food for the body’s use.

!  Components: Teeth, tongue, esophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, small intestine & large intestine (colon).

Excretory System !   Purpose: To rid the

body of waste products produced by body processes.

!   Components: Kidneys, bladder, anus, lungs, & skin.

!   NOTE: Some organs have multiple functions and can belong to more than one system.

Nervous System !  Purpose: To

communicate and control mental and physical activities and maintain homeostasis.

!  Components: Brain, spinal cord, & nerves.

Endocrine System !  Purpose: To

produce and regulate chemical messengers (hormones) in the body.

!  Components: Glands, pancreas, ovary, testis & hormones.

Reproductive System !  Purpose: To

produce, store, and distribute gametes.

!  Components: Male: Testis, penis, & sperm. Female: Ovary, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, eggs.

Objectives !  List all of the major body systems and their

main purpose.

!   Identify which major organs make up the body systems.
