Ludmila Curilova was born (1952) in Kishinev, Moldova. Ludmila was raised in an atmosphere of artistic exploration. Her father was a set designer and scene painter for Moldova's National Theatre of Opera and Ballet. Her mother was a ballerina at the same theatre company and together they instilled a love and appreciation for the arts in all their children. As a result, one of Ludmila's brothers is also an artist, another is a famous Eastern European writer. In 2001 Ludmila Curilova left her country and moved to Canada. Symbolism plays an important role in her paintings; some of these symbols are understandable to everyone and others have a very private meaning. “I still believe in fairy tales. One of my favorite expressions is that every woman is a princess inside“For Curilova her art has been a journey of discovery, inspired by the personal changes in her life.

Ludmila’s work is greatly influenced by illusory theatre art and it retains the decorative quality of a fairy tale setting. Both with her paintings on paper and those on canvas, Ludmila is able to capture a warm, rich glow of her colours with almost a magical essence.

“Painting has always been important to me.  It acts as the magic mirror through which I share my perception of the world.  The unspoken statement in my work is that inside every woman is a princess”. - Ludmila Curilova
