The introduction o the Long Range Identication and Tracking (LRIT) amendment
to SOLAS V/19 requires all operators o ships engaged on international voyages,
including passenger ships, cargo ships o 300 gross tonnage and above, and Mobile
Oshore Drilling Units (MODUs) to provide tested and certied shipborne equipment
or the transmission o LRIT inormation. For ull details see www.lrit.com.
LRIT EQUIPMENT CONFORMANCE TESTING
What do I have to do?
Compliance to LRIT is important. Some Governments
have indicated that they may not grant entry to their
territorial waters, or to their ports, or ships that do not
comply with LRIT.
You should arrange to test your equipment as soon
as possible. Test Certicates or LRIT terminals will
be required or radio surveys and inspection rom 31
December 2008.
Ship operators are required to provide shipborne
equipment which complies with the LRIT regulation,
pass a conormance test and obtain a test certicate.
All shipborne LRIT equipment must be tested and
certied by an Authorised Testing ASP appointed by
your Flag. Authorised Testing ASPs will also, on behal
o most Flags, be able to issue Conormance Test
Reports (Test Certicates) or terminals that pass
the test.

and transceiver details
into the account using a

wish to test and start the tests
at a time of your choosing.

Results are automatically emailed
to you within 48 hours, with clear
and helpful advice about what to
do if your terminal failed the test.

Why test with Pole Star?
We understand the LRIT system and what is required.
We attend and contribute to the relevant IMO COMSAR,NAV, MSC, Engineering and Working Group meetings.
We work with all the major satellite equipment
manuacturers, communications service providers, land
earth station operators, Inmarsat and other satellite
communication network providers to ensure that the
LRIT system works end-to-end. Pole Star is an LRIT
Data Centre Administrator and an Authorised Testing
ASP or over 40 Flags. See www.lrit.com or the latest
inormation.
Pole Star has provided commercial marine Fleet
Management and LRIT solutions or more than 10
years and today provides tracking and data services
to over 600 commercial and governmental clients
who manage 12,000 ocean going vessels. We are the
industry leaders in the tracking o ships using Inmarsat
C and other satellite systems. Our technical capability
is backed up by a proessional, multi-lingual customer
support team with oces in both Hong Kong and the
United Kingdom.
Pole Star’s system manages all aspects o the
test, including: terminal commissioning, satellite
communications network management, post-test
de-commissioning, production o a detailed test result
and provision o a conormance test certicate i
required. Testing o shipborne Inmarsat C equipment
began in July 2008 and we have conducted over 1,500
tests since then.
Ship operators who test their LRIT terminals with Pole
Star will also be oered a ree trial o our commercial
Fleet Management product.
Why test now?
Many Flags require LRIT compliance prior to 31
December 2008 in order to comply with IMO
Resolution MSC.211(81) regarding the timely
establishment o the LRIT system. The majority o
ships that will have to comply are already tted with
Inmarsat C equipment. However, many o these
terminals will not meet the required conormance
standard or a number o operational, physical and
technical reasons. As a result, new equipment will
need to be purchased and tted. With this in mind,
ship operators are advised to test their terminals with
Pole Star as soon as possible.
The ship operator’s obligation under the LRIT regulation is to
ensure provision o compliant equipment to transmit the identity
o the ship, the position and date and time o the position to
the Data Centre nominated by the Flag Administration / Ship
Register. In addition, the terminal must be able to respond
to polling or an on-demand position report and be able to
immediately respond to instructions to modiy the automatic
reporting interval to a requency o a maximum o one every 15
minutes. Automatic Position Reports will be transmitted at a
minimum 4 times per day to your Flag’s National Data Centre.

How to test
We provide a web based system where ship operators
have their own account. From your account you can
initiate tests at any time and review the progress
and status o your tests. The system provides error
messages and suggests corrective action on ailed
equipment.
Our simple user-riendly interace
is designed with shipowners
in mind. Registering your
transceivers is ree. Our custom-
designed import tool within our
interace will allow you to import
your feet data all at once.
The imported feet details will be transerred to the LRIT
Transceiver list. Once the transceiver(s) are registered, you
can start the testing process immediately.
Our simple user-riendly interace gives you a secure
testing account. With this, you can initiate your tests
at any time, allowing you to t your testing around your
operational schedule.
Once you’ve gathered your feet inormation, our
intuitive application allows you to upload your entire
feet with one click. With your testing account, you can
overview the progress and status o testing o your
feet. Your results are emailed to you within 48 hours.

How do I get a certifcate?
Pole Star can issue LRIT Conormance test reports
(Test Certicates) on behal o most fags. An onlineprocess or requesting test certicates will be available
in October.
I your Flag is issuing certicates directly, Pole Star will
orward all successul test results directly to your Flag.
What should I do i my equipment ails the
test?
I your shipborne equipment is non-conormant, Pole
Star can supply a dedicated LRIT kit (inclusive o a
Sailor LRIT TT3000M Mini-C) delivered directly to your
ship, precongured with all Inmarsat C operational
processes or immediate use; including terminal and
PSA activation, ISP or AA set-up and LRIT programming
and commissioning.
Inormation on survey and certifcation
It is important to note that an existing ship saety radio
certicate does not coner LRIT compliance on the ship.
MSC.1/Circ.1257 regarding Guidance on the survey and
certication o compliance o ships with requirement to transmit
LRIT inormation states that compliance o the shipborne
equipment with the regulation should be demonstrated by the
equipment being:
1. o a type approved by the Administration in accordance
with the provisions o regulation V/19-1 and section 4
o the revised perormance standards; or
2. certied by the Administration as meeting the
requirements o regulation IV/14 and satisactorily
completing a conormance test; or
3. certied by the Administration as meeting therequirements o IEC 60945 (2002-08) and IEC 60945
Corr.1 (2008-04) on Maritime navigation and
radiocommunications equipment and systems – General
Requirements – Methods o testing and required test
results and satisactorily completing a conormance test.
