Low Carbon Options

• Fuel cells

• Hydrogen

• Bioethanol

• Biodiesel

• Natural gas

• Biomethane

• Only 3 suitable for HGVs

Delivering Excellence…

Biodiesel

• CO2 benefit depends on life cycle of the material, some interfere with food chain.

• 100% PPO engine conversion required. Varying analysis of tail pipe emission. OEMs not fully supportive of which could potentially cause warranty issues.

Delivering Excellence…

Natural Gas

• Cleanest of all the fossil fuels is methane

• CH4 + 2O2 = 2H2O + CO2

• Readily available

• Dedicated vehicles or dual fuel conversions

• Supported by OEMs & no warranty issues

Delivering Excellence…

Biomethane

• Substitute for natural gas

• Other European countries using widely.

• Currently best low carbon option for HGVs

• Limited availability of supply (but due to increase)

Delivering Excellence…

Initial barriers• Challenges outlined:

• Cost – too expensive? – analysis shows good payback• Gas vehicles problematic? – experience in UK & Europe• What if we run out of fuel? – dual fuel switches to diesel • What if something better comes along in a few years? -

If it does vehicles are changes every 3 – 5 years & can adopt new technology, if it doesn’t at least we haven’t been doing nothing waiting.

• Why isn’t everyone else doing it? – all asking the same question

• Focused on solutions – it is do-able & do-able now

Delivering Excellence…

Experience

• Our story …. So far• Vehicles available• Vehicle warranty & maintenance• Fuel• Fuelling station• Investment approved • Environmental performance

Delivering Excellence…

Assistance needed

• Clarity on parity in duty differential• Confirmation Government backing natural gas• Action on fuelling infrastructure

• Incentive e.g. on CO2 saving to help cover vehicle premium
