Low and Humble
Music for Flute, Violin, and Tenor Joseph Buchheit
My Low and Humble Home Nathaniel Hawthorne
I left my low and humble home,
Far from my Father's fields to roam. My peaceful cot no more had charms,
My only joy was War's alarms. I panted for the field of fight,
I gaz'd upon the deathless light, Which o'er the Hero's grave is shed,
The glorious memory of the dead. Ambition show'd a distant star,
That shed its radiance bright and far, And pointed to a path which led O'er heaps of dying and of dead;
Onward I press'd with eager feet, And War's dread thunder still would greet
My reckless ears. Where'er I trod, I saw the green and verdant sod,
Turn red with blood of slaughter'd foes, And Fury veil'd in smoke arose.
I gain'd the envied height; and there, I sigh'd for that lone cottage, where
The early hours of life flew by, On wings of youthful ecstacy.
Too late I found that Glory’s ray, Could never bring one happy day.
Performance Notes
Time Length: About Six Minutes
Flute Harmonics – Notated with a diamond notehead fundamental note and the heard pitch
above. Breath Marks – Take a breath and a small pause. Length of pause is at performer’s
discretion. ord. – Play the flute normally
Violin
Sul ponticello (s.p.) – Play near the bridge Harmonics – Natural harmonics are notated with a diamond notehead or regular
notehead with this symbol above it: ° Artificial Harmonics are notated with a diamond notehead and regular notehead a perfect fourth above.
Breath Marks – Take a small pause. Length of pause is at performer’s discretion. Slurred Triplets – Use one bow direction to play slurred triplets.
ord. - Play the violin normally
Tenor Breath Marks - Take a breath and a small pause. Length of pause is at performer’s
discretion. Sigh – At measure 46, start “sigh’d” on a G3, then quickly sigh without pitch. There
should be a smooth transformation between sung note and the sigh.
The motive in m.29-30 is borrowed from Chopin’s Nocturne Op.48 No.2
