SNOWBOARDING GEAR FOR WOMEN

Sarah Catherine Church Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design April 23, 2012

Table of Contents- Hunt Statement- Research- Process- Execution- Evaluation- Summary- Annotated Bib HELLO!

LOUD IS A SNOWBOARDING BRAND THAT RESPONDS TO TODAY’S FEMALE RIDER:

BOLD, CONFIDENT AND DEDICATED, WHILE INTRODUCING PROGRESSIVE COLORS AND PATTERNS THAT INSPIRE AND ENERGIZE.

Message:My idea was to create this line of clothing for women that wanted to be bold and aggressive without being girly and not to manly. I wanted an in between feeling and look. I choose colors that really stood out and were loud so that no matter where you were you would always be noticed. I wanted this line/brand for women so they could be comfortable in their own skin when riding with men, because a lot of the time men are intimidating and or just rude to women on the hill or mountain, because some of them have this mind set that women can’t ride. That’s not true. We can ride just as hard as they can and sometimes even more. Unless you are a women rider and are already pro there is no respect out there for the other women. We have to prove ourselves with the way we look and how we ride. I wanted my brand to be able to give these women a chance to get out there and have full confi dence and show all that they are vibing and cruising just has hard as the men.

Audience: Women who are bold, serious, dedicated riders. The ones that want to stand out and speak what they feel through riding and the clothing they are wearing. I’m aiming towards women that aren’t afraid to get dirty and hurt. The ones who are willing to stand up for themselves and shed a little blood.

WOMEN SNOWBOARDING ADVERTISING

The companies that advertise women in snowboarding have a separate line for women snowboarders or have a team rider. It is rare for a company to advertise women if they don't necessarily have a women rider or a women line.

PROCESS!!!!!

My first idea for my brand name was to call is “WOOF” Say. It. Loud. The whole idea behind this was that “WOOF” was something that my friend and I would always say when we saw an attractive man or just being our selves. Not afraid of who we are and showing people that. This one didn’t fully go through because I knew I could take it further.

After thinking more and figuring out what I could also call my brand I had a hard time pin pointing what I needed to call it. I was watching a video of my favorite snowboarder, JJ Thomas and his brand that he just started with one of his bud-dies called, “YEA. NICE” There you tube video game me the idea of thinking about what I say with my friends and that’s how I came up with “WOOF”, but again I took it further and really started paying attention. So one day as I was explaining some design piece to my friends I kept saying how loud I wanted to be and it clicked, that I always want my designs and my life to be loud and out there, so that’s where I came up with my brand, “LOUD”.

Trying to find the right placement for logo. I wanted a symbol to go along with brand and logo as well. Eventually I wanted people to identify my brand with the symbol as well as the actual logo.

Color Choices:First Color Swatches= Too Dull!!!!

Second Color Swatches= Just Perfect!!!!

The Mailer Piece never got put into my show because it wasn’t a good take away for people and it was a hypothetical piece that would cost a lot to actually produce

Look Book-Catalog

The look book was created to give all the viewers a chance too look at all the cloth-ing LOUD has to offer. It has everything from the team riders of LOUD to jackets and snowboards. Here are a few example of what the pages look like inside the book.

EXECUTION!!!

I WANTED THE PEDESTAL TO BE APART OF THE ACTUAL DISPLAY AND PLAY A PART IN IT AS WELL. THESE FIRST FEW PICTURES SHOW EXACTLY WHAT I WAS FIRST THINKING WITH USING THE PATTERN CREATED.

AFTER STAYING IN MY EXHIBIT DAY IN AND DAY OUT I STARTED TO THINK OF THE OVER ALL DESIGN AND HOW I CAN ACTUALLY PLAY THE PEDESTAL IN WITHTHE WHOLE BACKGROUND AND THE WALL...

IN THESE PHOTOS YOU CAN SEE THAT I STARTED TO PLAY WITH OPTICAL ILLUSION AND THE THREE ANGELS THAT YOU VIEW THE DISPLAY AT YOUCOULD SEE WHERE THE POINT WAS CUT OFF BUT ABLE TO VIEW IT AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE ARROW WAS BROUGHT ONTO THE PEDESTAL.

FINAL DISPLAY WITHEVERYTHING PUT TOGETHER AND READY FOR THE PUBLIC TO VIEW.

EVALUATION

IN CLASS WRITING #1

LOOKING BACK WHAT ADVICE WOULD I GIVE MYSELF...

-HAVE A SOLID IDEA BEFORE 2ND SEMESTER-RESEARCH ALL THE TIME-NO SLACKING-BE ON TOP OF MY GAME 24/7-TALK OUTSIDE OF CLASSMATES-SAVE MONEY!!!!!!!-STAY POSITIVE AND OPEN-MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS BE ASKING QUESTIONS

TIMES WHERE I AM MOST PRODUCTIVE? WHERE?

I’M MOST PRODUCTIVE WHEN I’M AROUND THE PEOPLE I’M COMFORTABLE WITH. I GO TO ALTERRA A LOT TO GET INSPIRED. I WATCH PEOPLE AND THINGS OUT-SIDE. I AM ALWAYS WATCHING SNOWBOARDING VIDEOS AND WHEN I WORK OUT I’M ALWAYS LISTENING TO TUNES THAT GET ME INSPIRED TOO. COFFEE IN THE MORNING ALWAYS HELPS ME TOO AND WAKING UP TO A QUITE HOUSE WITH OUTROOMMATES MAKING NOISES. THE MORNING IS ALWAYS BEST FOR ME TO WORK. IT’S LIKE STARTING OVER AND NEW AND MAKING SOMETHING BETTER.

WHAT DO I WANT TO SHOW ABOUT PROCESS? IF NOT, WHY?

I DON’T BELIEVE MY FINAL EXHIBIT WILL NEED TO SHOW PROCESS. I HOPE IT’LL BE A VERY SELF EXPLANATORY PIECE/SHOW. IT’S A NEW BRAND AND WITH ALL MYCOMPONENTS I WANT IT TO BE ABLE TO STAND ALONE. IF ANYTHING I WILL HAVE A SECTION WHERE IT’S EXPLAINING WHERE MY FIRST THOUGHTS WERE TILL THE END. SHOWING MY PROCESS WILL DEGRADE MY PIECE AND NOT MAKE IT AS STRONG. I WILL HAVE TO MANY COMPONENTS AND PATTERNS AS IT IS.

HOW DID YOU PICK YOUR COMPONENTS/DESIGNS VISUAL DECISION...

I WENT THROUGH A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS AND SURVEYS WITH MANY WOMEN SNOWBOARDERS. I ASKED THEM SERIES OF QUESTIONS AND SHOWED THEM PICTURES AND COLOR SWATCHES, ALLOWING THEM TO PICK WHICH ONES BEST DESCRIBE WOMEN IN SNOWBOARDING. DURING PRIMARY RESEARCH I EX-PLORED A LOT OF COMPANIES FROM SNOWBOARDING TO TENNIS TO GET A FEEL OF ALL SPORT IDEAS AND CONCEPTS. MY VISUAL DECISIONS WERE BASED ON A LOT OF WHAT I THOUGHT AND FELLOW WOMEN RIDERS. GREAT HELP FROM CLASSMATES TOO.
