Los Jóvenes Queremos Paz y Amor

It started with a group of youth. We were sitting around talking about social justice and how hip hop, in particular, embodied social justice. Though I was the “adult,” they were my teachers. This group, of mostly young men, talked at length about how they used hip hop and street art to voice their anger, frustration, and yearn for love. I used to think that graffiti was vandalism. After that conversation, I saw street art not only as an expression of pain and frustration but as an act of resistance, a voice on a wall.
Everywhere I go, I look for the voices on the walls.
