TEXT FOR THE MONTH
An extract from Mathew 5 verses 1 to 12
Jesus began to teach the disciples, saying: "Blessed are the poor inspirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those whohunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed arethe merciful, for they will be shown mercy.Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are thepeacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are thosewho are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdomof heaven. The NIV Bible
Prayer for the Lent.
Living God, teach us to be like those who search for a deeperknowledge of you. Teach us the secret of being hungry foryour presence in our lives. Help us to see how much we clutterour lives with that which is trivial and unimportant and ignoreyou. Help us in this time of reflection in Lent to focus on you,to desire your kingdom and to study your word eagerly andexpectantly. We rejoice that you value us despite our manyweaknesses and our repeated faults, that your nature is alwaysmerciful and your grace inexhaustible. Help us to find time thatwe reflect on what you can do for us, if only we will put our trust in you.Help us to live each day seeking your peace and giving time to be still inyour presence, knowing you are the living Lord.In Jesus name we pray. Amen
Prayer Points for March

Give thanks for the signs of Spring as we enjoy flowers appearingagain in our gardens and along the hedgerows.

From Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council
Calling all v olunteers!
Two important village groups are looking for someextra help with their work over the coming months:
The Village Fete Committee: this is now a committee of theparish council but, as always, the success of the event is reliantupon the hard work of the band of volunteers who work throughout the year to make the day enjoyable for all. However,a few extra pairs of hands are always welcome and this yearsevent on Saturday 11th June is no exception. Can you spare sometime to help out on the day or in the run-up to the event? Pleasecontact Bruce Batting (882605), Nick Robinson (882722) or IvanGosden (881007) who will be pleased to offer further informationon ways in which you can help.
The Village Green Volunteers: this group of like-minded peoplemeet on a regular basis to discuss the management of one of theparishs most valuable assets and put their ideas and suggestionsto the parish council for consideration. They are keen to encouragemore volunteers to help with practical projects and the first one of the year is planned for Saturday 9th April. It will concentrate on ageneral tidy-up on the area behind the war memorial. If you canhelp on this day, please contact Bruce Batting (882605) or SandyJohnston (882507).
Tennis charges
The parish council has found it necessary to increase the charge forhire of the tennis court to 4 per hour for adults from 1st April. Thecharge for juveniles will remain at 2 per hour. The key to thecourts may be obtained from the village shop which also collectsthe money on behalf of the parish council.
Annual Parish Meeting
This is just to give advance notice of the above meeting which willbe held this year on Friday 20th May in the Village Hall at 7.30pm.

Redundancy
Redundancy is a form of dismissal. It occurs when an employer decides
s/he needs fewer employees in the business or organisation. It is apotentially fair reason for dismissal.
Situations where you can be made redundant include:
Your employer's business, or part of the business, has ceased to operate;or your employer's business has moved to a different place; or thebusiness's need for work of a particular type to be done has ceased ordiminished.
You could be made redundant if: the work you do is no longer neededyour job no longer exists because your work is being done by otheremployees your employer has ceased trading but is not insolvent youremployer's business, or the work you are doing, moves to another areayour employer needs fewer employees to carry out the work you aredoing, although the level of work remains the same your employer'sbusiness becomes insolvent or your employer was the sole proprietor of the business and the employer dies.
Redundancy payments -The statutory redundancy payment schemeobliges your employer to make basic redundancy payments if you aremade redundant and if you qualify because you have worked for youremployer for at least two years . Your employment contract maygive you a right to larger redundancy payments.
Points to consider - Is there a real redundancy? Because it is a neutralsounding reason for dismissing someone, it can be used to hide otherreasons for your dismissal, such as discrimination. If you don't really think you've been made redundant when your employer says you have, youmay be able to make a claim to an employment tribunal for unfairdismissal, discrimination, or both.

Beat Officers report Speed enforcement: Unfortunately no enforcementwas carried out this last month, due to othercommitments. It has been decided that beat officerswill be trained to do their own speed enforcement. We are just waiting to hear when the training will takeplace.
Ant Social Behaviour: There were two reported incidents, onein Bramley and one in Sherfield on Loddon. Please continue toreport any incidents to 101.Parking: It has been chosen as a priority this quarter; there isan issue at school times outside Bramley Primary School, and tosome extent in relation to Silchester Primary School. Althoughthere have been no problems since the line painting at theentrance to the German Road housing estate, there have beenproblems elsewhere on the estate, resulting in an accident atone location.Fear of crime: it has been identified by the beat panel (madeup of a representative from each parish) that fear of crime is anissue and so it will be a priority for 2011. We are hoping thatone way of combating this is to invite residents to become partof a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
In relation to crime in the area, burglary of non dwellings is stillthe main offence, with nothing being stolen in all but oneincident, where two childrens motorised bikes were stolen .
Neighbourhood Watch: If anyone is interested in setting up ascheme in their road / area please let me know. We werehoping that residents on the German Road development wouldset up schemes in their respective roads, however there hasbeen very little response and so this will not be pursued further.

The Road to Santiago - by Bob and R ody PolittThe Camino de Santiago de Compostela, also known in English as TheWay of St James is a collection of old pilgrimage routes which coverEurope. They all have Santiago de Compostela, in north west Spain, astheir final destination. For more than 1000 years pilgrims have been
walking along the Camino de Santiago. Rody and I had heard about theCamino and so in 2008, in a moment a madness, we decided to give it ago. We climbed the very steep paths in the Pyrenees from St Jean Pied dePort to Orrison and walked the final trek into Santiago itself.
Whilst we found it tough it was also thrilling, challenging and an opportu-nity to step aside from the normal hurly burly of life. We left the city of Santiago having met many people from all over the world who had cometo do as we did but for as many different reasons and we decided thatone day wed like to return to gain a Compostella a pilgrim certificate.
W hy Go to Santiago Today?
On April 8th we fly to la Coruna, just north of Santiago where well take atrain to the town of Sarria and walk 112 kilometres along the pilgrimroute, the Camino, into Santiago de Compostela, arriving on Palm Sunday.
Today about 100,000 people attempt the walk each year and this came
about when in 2001 Hape Kerkeling, a German comedian walked almost500 miles across the top of Spainalong the Camino to Santiago. Hewrote a book: "I'm Off Then: Losingand Finding Myself on the Caminode Santiago" describing how thispilgrimage changed his life, how hefelt pain and joy as he walked the
mountains, plains and hills of Spain.Since then his trek has attractedmany people wanting to go on ajourney of self discovery.
We shall be walking with a friend,Veronica Upton from Stratfield Saye, who fortunately speaks Spanish. Theaim of our walk is to raise awarenessand much needed cash to help buildtoilets and a meeting area for themany children and families nowattending St Leonards in Sherfield.

Our Plan
As soon as we get off the train at about 9am on 9thApril we shall start walking. Its possible to arrange towalk the Camimo in comfort with couriers carrying
your luggage from hotel to
hotel, meeting you en routewith refreshments and lunch. We shall be walking thechallenging way, with back-packs staying overnight at thepilgrim refuges, albergues, dotted along the route. Theyare very basic and cost 2/3 euros. The route can be
tough and must be walked with care and readiness for all weathers. Markersare placed along the route in the form of the pilgrim's shell but more normallyas a yellow arrow pointing to Santiago.
Day 1
Although relatively fit we are not experienced climbers and those who fall bythe wayside are so often those who are overambitious. So, we have decidedto climb the steadily undulating pathway to Ferrerios on day one (13.6k)
rising about 200m before we tackle the steep ascentto Alto Paramo on day two from where we make adramatic descent of over 300m to the town
Portomarin and the 200m ascent to Gonza, the siteof our second nights refuge. The distance is 17.5k but the descent and ascent makes it a tough andpotentially dangerous day. Past experience has taughtus that steep descents are not easy.
Be Prepared
Good equipment is essential and it would be foolhardy to go unprepared.Blisters are the curse of walkers and we were well advised to tuck wispystrands of sheep's wool around toes as well as to wear special sock linersinside our walking socks. Good, tough boots, walking poles, especially forsteep descents, and UVA breathable clothes are basic requirements.
A former experienced soldier advised us to travel light with the minimum of equipment and to maintain good hygiene take a pack of Baby wipes! Drink plenty to avoid dehydration and rest frequently but not too long; shower andearly to bed!

In our previous experience all this advice provedinvaluable. All the refuges were lights out by 9.00pm andpeople were on the road by 6.00-7.00am. Your rhythmand pattern of life is governed by your need to arrive atyour next resting place before the hostels are full. We shallaim to be at our next point of arrival by 2.00pm each day.
Days 2 to 7
Day two is a steadily undulating descent to Palas de Rei(17.9k). Day 3 we continue our descent to Milede (15.3k).On day four our path becomes more undulating and chal-lenging as we climb up toArazua (14.k)
Day five we climb gently toArca do Pino, our longestdays walking(20k). FromArca on day six we have anundulating climb (100m) toreach Monte Gozo (16k),our last stop beforeSantiago. The refuge at Monte is luxury so we will enjoy ahot shower, a splendid meal and a good nights sleep. From Monte Gozo we shall make our descent into Santiagothe following morning, a mere 4k to the Cathedral toattend the Pilgrim Mass. This is the least attractive part of the walk as we skirt the perimeter of the busy airport andleave the pilgrim path to walk along the city pavementsamidst the traffic.
Santiago
Santiago de Compostela is a city of about 90,000 people inGalicia, north-western Spain. Santiago's name and fame
both derive from James theApostle, whose relics aretraditionally believed to beenshrined under the cathedral'saltar, but who knows? Legendhas it that James preached inSpain before being martyred inJerusalem in 44 AD and his body
was brought back to Spain after his death.

Its a strange feeling carrying your pilgrimpack, marking you out as a peligrino asyou make your way to the Cathedral. Tothe locals its a familiar sight and anessential part of their routine but for thepilgrim it can be mixer of sadness as youleave behind the solitude of the Caminoand excitement as your search for theCathedral, your journeys end.
The Cathedral is hidden from view by modernbuildings until you enter the old quarter whensuddenly you are surrounded by baroquearchitecture, walkways, spires, arches.
Tourists assemble before the Cathedral aspilgrims make their way to the Pilgrim Mass.Whether you are aCatholic, a believer inGod or nothing in particular you are bonded togetherby your pilgrimage as you gather for the service. If you are fortunate, you will experience the famous goldBotafumeiro, it being the largest censer in the world
weighing 80kg, filled with 40kg of incense as it isswung across the Cathedral by 8 men at speeds of 40mph.
Collecting your Compostela
As you travel along the Camino you carry your PilgrimPassport to be franked at the local churches, bars, cafesand sometimes from a wayside desk as evidence of your
journey. On production of your passport at theCathedral office in Santiago you can receive yourCompostella, a certificate of congratulation. However, for the less scrupulous you can also buy them at thelocal gift shops, but its not the same! Its really apersonal trophy to remind you of your journey.

Beyond Santiago
We will use our pilgrimage to pray and one of the focal points of mypersonal prayers will be the parishes in our benefice and especially thebuilding project at St Leonards in Sherfield.
Over the years St Leonards has been a place of pilgrimage for many people and continues so today. Those who have put their faith in Jesus, the Son of God, and who have discovered the joy of his pres-ence and who come to worship him; those whocome because of a family celebration, a wedding ora funeral; those who visit the churchyard or an Open Day; those who arepassing by. Its amazing the number of people for whom St Leonards has
become a part of their pilgrimage. Consequently we want to make it aplace of welcome for all who come, whether Christian of not. To this endwe seek to build facilities to provide for the needs of all who are passing byand who use this place of sanctuary.
The community at Sherfield has so far raised theamazing amount of 114,000 for which I thank you. There is still a 100,000 to go but we are onthe way and our Santiago is in sight. As we raisethis we continue to pay its Parish Share to theDiocese of Winchester and to give money tosupport other charities and needs in our locality. The church community is in itself a Camino of faith as people step aside of the rat race and self
indulgence of contemporary life seeking ways to build for our communityand the generations to come. Rody and I hope and pray that our smalleffort may enable more support to be given for this project and that it mayprove to be a blessing to you. Please pray for us onthis walk, and if you possible can, please sponsor usover the 112 kilometres we will be travelling. Anyamount from a 1p per kilometre to 1.00 perkilometre will be most gratefully received and go along way towards the extension we are planning forSt Leonards. If you can donate please contact ourtreasurer Dan Farrow on 01256 882680. With manythanks and every blessing.
Bon Camino!

Dear Editor,
Ref Stratfield Saye Loddon Link Deliveries an idea:
I think we all hugely value the Loddon Link for it does just that links the villages together.
We are aware that dear Roy Best is retiring from his fantasticdelivery service of the Loddon Link to the residents of StratfieldSaye after many years of faithful service and is seeking the bestway forward.
Roy deserves a medal and he certainly has our warmest thanksand appreciation.
The fact is, that in this modern world, most people live very busylives and perhaps there may not be volunteers to replace Roys A -class delivery service. However, there are alternatives to physicaldelivery, namely:
Email with Word attachment or,
Monthly postal delivery for those who dont have email.
In order to ascertain which method suits people, a Questionnairecould be delivered to each house in Stratfield Saye offering achoice of either of the above.
If people choose 1), they need to reply with their email address orif 2) they need to provide their name and address and either 12 xpostage stamps upfront (of the correct value) or an appropriateamount by cheque to cover the cost of a years deliveries. Since
most people have email, 1) it would probably be the majoritychoice and the end result would be that no time-consumingdelivery would be necessary and you would be able to save costsby printing less!
I guess that you will already have thought of this, but it may bebest if you suggest this to Roy and Germano.
Many thanks! Tim Gauntlett
We are grateful to Tim for his idea and print it here to encourage further thoughts on the matter... Editor

LODDON PLAYERS
LODDON Players are proud to announce Matt Stanley as Directorof their Spring Production, Key for Two by John Chapman andDave Freeman.
Harriet, a divorcee living in an elegant flat in Brighton, solves her financial problems by entertaining twomarried gentlemen callers on different days of theweek. The scheme faces collapse when her friendAnne, whose marriage is tottering, arrives at the flathotly pursued by her husband. One of Harriets lovers is confined toher bed with a sprained ankle and the second lover turns upunexpectedly, closely followed by two irate wives in search of theiritinerant husbands. The indescribable confusion that ensues buildsto a rich complexity of mistaken identity, splendidly farcicalsituations and a climax of comic wizardry.
With performances in the Village Hall on Thursday 28, Friday 29and Saturday 30 April, tickets will be available from mid-March bycalling 01256 880224.

Report by Gill Fearon
Page 35
Our February meeting was a Swedish theme evening when we all
brought some Swedish food to share. We were all amazed at thewonderful variety of Swedish dishes and sampled such delights assmoked mackerel with rhubarb chutney, haddock on crispbread, gravadlax, various salads and breads, followed by Swedish meatballs withlingonberry sauce, chicken and banana, potato bake and fish stew. Ourdesserts consisted of Swedish Apple Cake, Konungens Torte (chocolatecake layers with confectioners custard and a chocolate topping!),Cinnamon Pastries and Raspberry and Cream tartlets. A meal made in
Heaven! After our meal we drank a toast to our former member, Betty Maby, whodied recently, and remembered her kind and thoughtful nature combinedwith a lovely sense of humour. Despite suffering serious illnesses, shenever once complained.
We then listened to various talks on aspects of Sweden, the largestcountry in Scandinavia. We then heard about the Sami people, theindigenous group who live in the north whom we used to call Laps. However, lap means patched clothing which would indicate a ragamuffin,so the term is no longer used. The Samis are a very resourceful peoplemaking a living from reindeer with modern equipment. They are oftenmulti-lingual.
A picture of a couple wearing national costume in blue and yellow wasshown and we heard about the Viking long boats and in particular, theVasa warship which was launched in 1627, sank soon after and was
excavated in 1961. Like the Mary Rose, it is being preserved, but is sadlydeteriorating. Some beautiful painted Dala horses were passed roundand we heard about their connection with Christmas. Talks were givenon famous Swedes such as Nobel, Celcius and Linnaeus, as well as theactress Greta Garbo, who famously wanted to be alone after a short, butbusy, acting career!
After listening to a talk on the many colourful Swedish customs, we learntabout that famous store, IKEA. One of the husbands generously allowedhis wife to bring along some of his vintage collection of Swedish glasswhich had been carefully bubble-wrapped! There were some lovelypieces, each with the designers name etched on the bottom.
