Factory Default Settings 3.1.
3.1.1. Basic Parameters at Detection of Objects
The LMS531 scans with a scanning frequency of 25, 35, 50, 75 or 100 Hz according to versions or with an angular resolution from 0.166° to 1°. At a higher scanning frequency or a finer angular resolution the LMS531 supplies more measured values. There are several valid combinations of scan frequency and angular resolution possible. These can be selected in the SOPAS ET configuration software.
3.1.2. Filter
The LMS531 has digital filters for the pre-processing and optimization of the measured distance values. You can configure a fog filter, multiple echo filters or a filter for interference suppression (airborne particles). Fog filter The fog filter suppresses possible glare due to fog. The LMS531 becomes less sensitive in the near range (up to approx. 7 m) with the fog filter.
Echo filter
If echo pulses are reflected by several objects during a measurement (incident on drops of rain, glass surfaces, edges etc.) with a maximum of up to five echoes (PRO), the echo filter can be selected to give out only the first echo, all echoes or the last echo received.
Particle filter
The particle filter can be used in dusty surroundings or in case of rain or snow to filter out interference due to particles of dust, rain drops, snowflakes etc.
Important
The particle filter is an application filter. It acts on the field application, not on the measured value output.
Due to the particle filter, the reaction to an object in the evaluation field or an infringement of the contour is delayed by the time for a scan. The response time set for the pixel evaluation, blanking and contour evaluation strategies is not changed as a result.
3.1.3. Measured value output
For the measured value output, the LMS531 can supply the measured values to one of the communication interfaces. For further information, please refer to the LMS5xx Operation Instructions.
The LMS531 Lite transfer communication speed for the measured values is limited to 1Hz.
3.1.4. Field Application
With the aid of the integrated field application, the LMS531 PRO evaluates up to 10 evaluation fields within its scan area. Using the field application, you can e.g. implement systems for building surveillance or for access monitoring.
As supplied nine evaluation fields with pre-configured parameters are available. You can change and adapt the size and shape of all nine evaluation fields to suit your needs. These evaluation fields are

already configured with evaluation cases for the pixel evaluation with blanking and linked to the alarm output. You can also configure a 10th field. This field is used for tamper protection.
Important
The tamper protection function is only possible with the 10th field (LMS531 PRO). The 10th field cannot be used as a monitoring field.
The LMS531 Lite evaluates up to 4 evaluation fields within its scan area. The tamper protection function is only possible with the 4th field. The 4th field cannot be used as a monitoring field.
Each field can only be used once in one evaluation case. If the field needs to be used in more than one evaluation case it must be duplicated (the copy field function can be used).
Evaluation Cases 3.2.
An evaluation case defines which output field is evaluated in which way and on which output it acts. You can configure up to ten evaluation cases (LMS531 PRO) or up to four evaluation cases (LMS531 Lite), all configured evaluation cases are active simultaneously. Only one field can be used per evaluation case.
For each evaluation case you configure in SOPAS ET:
• Inputs that activate an evaluation case, if necessary
• The evaluation strategy
• The evaluation field
• The output on which the evaluation case acts
• The response time of the output
Device signals 3.3.
3.3.1. Inputs
The LMS531 contains 3 different operating modes. The different operating modes can be activated by switching 1st and 2nd digital inputs.
1st
input 2nd
input Operating mode
0 V 0 V Armed (only if 2nd
input = 0 V = Walk test inactive)
24 V 0 V Disarmed (only if 2nd
input = 0 V = Walk test inactive)
0 V 24 V Walk test active
24 V 24 V Walk test active
- 1st input: switching between “ARMED” and “DISARMED”
- 2nd input: switching between “WALK TEST” active and inactive
Meaning of each mode: - ARMED: In this mode the full front panel (LEDs, display and USB interface) will be inactive. Field
infringements will not be visible on the LEDs. If a field infringement exists, the alarm output switches on and an internal alarm memory will be set. The alarm memory will be visible in the mode “Disarmed”.
Technical Information
LMS531 Laser Measurement Sensors

- DISARMED: In this mode only the “Q1” LED will be set if during mode “Armed” the alarm memory was set. If a field infringement exists in this operation mode, the alarm output switches but the LEDs are inactive.
- WALK TEST: The Front panel is active and field infringement will be displayed on the “Q1” LED and alarm output switches. The 2nd input has a higher priority than 1st input. So if “Walk test” is active the “Armed/Disarmed” mode is disregarded.
3.3.2. Outputs
All evaluation cases are directly linked to the alarm output. The LMS 531 has two (Lite) or four (PRO) relay outputs. The configuration of the outputs is as follows:
Output 1: Alarm (Lite, PRO) (Relay)
Output 2: Error (Lite, PRO) (Relay)
Output 3: Sabotage (Lite) (Digital)
Output 3: Disqualification (PRO) (Relay)
Output 4: Sabotage (PRO) (Relay)
The relay outputs can be used as volt-free outputs. Output 1 (Alarm) of Lite and PRO and Output 4 (Sabotage) of PRO can be resistance monitored outputs.
3.3.3. Day/Night switching (PRO device)
The 3rd input can be used to activate the either day or night Evaluation Cases.
3rd
input Day/Night switching
0 V Evaluation fields which are active at day are monitored
24 V Evaluation fields which are active at night are monitored

3.3.4. Alarm signal
All existing fields are connected by logic “OR” to digital Output 1 (Alarm). The Restart time can be parameterized. Under the SOPAS ET “Standard Mode” the Alarm message is programed to the Output 1 (Alarm) and cannot be changed. The duration of the switched alarm output can be set in different steps:
1 second
3 seconds
10 seconds The factory default set of the parameter is 3 seconds. Under the SOPAS “Expert Mode” the Alarm message can be programmed to any output.
3.3.5. Error signal
If there is an error with the device this signal will activate. This is equivalent to the “Device_Ready” functionality of the standard devices. Under the SOPAS ET “Standard Mode” the Error message is programmed to the Output 2 (Error) and cannot be changed. The duration of the switched Error output can be set in different steps:
1 second
3 seconds
10 seconds The factory default set of the parameter is 3 seconds. Under the SOPAS ET “Expert Mode” the Error message can be programed to any output.
Teach-In functionality 3.4.
3.4.1. Tamper protection contour
The Field editor has an additional Teach-In mode called “Tamper protection contour”.
This Tamper Protection Contour field is designed to detect whether the front lens of the LMS531 has been covered or the LMS531 has been moved from its original position. Basically it creates a contour as a reference field starting always from the LMS531 and predefined in the “standard” mode to Field 10. In “Expert” Mode this field can be changed under the “Evaluation Case”

section and the Evaluation Strategy must be selected under “Contour”.
In the following settings, the parameter “Distance” controls how far the teach points are away from contour (positive distance). In the above picture the offset distance to the contour is 100 mm. This “Distance” setting allows some tolerances in case of vibrations on the LMS531 or the target. If the LMS531 is also rotated or moved from its original position and the new target exceeds the limit of the Tamper protection contour (green line on the above picture) the output 1 “Alarm” will be triggered.
3.4.2. Validation Checking
Tampering within the monitored field areas is prevented with this function. It is used for final testing and prevents incorrect set-up of the monitoring fields. This function will validate that all the programmed fields and contours of the LMS531 are clear from any obstacle or shadows and are fully visible from the LMS531’s position. This operation must be performed with the LMS531 connected and online. The TEACH-IN VALIDITY AREA function must be run once at the end. Under the “Expert” Mode this function can be found under the main menu “Parameters” “Security” or directly on the “Quick Start” page in the “Standard” Mode.

The following status can be indicated:
Pending / Open Validity check has not yet been undertaken (new fields have been defined, existing fields have been modified or deleted).
Invalid Taught-in contour is invalid (e.g. half of the beams for a field are invalid).
Valid Contour has been successfully taught-in. Validity signifies that every laser beam in every angular segment is checked for valid and stable measured values. This test is however only performed for the angular areas in which monitoring fields have been defined. In this way it is ensured that sufficient measured values are available that the LMS531 can evaluate.
During the validity check all set-up fields are checked for validity. If all fields are valid, the fault output is cleared and as a result the fault signal removed. If the monitoring fields configured are not found to be valid, the fault output remains activated and generates a fault message. In the SOPAS ET user interface the outputs are changed from orange to gray. Manipulation within the monitored field areas is prevented with this function. If a manipulation (masking) lasts by minimum of 10 seconds an error is triggered. Falls off the error the error signal turns off and the error output of the LMS531 turns clear again. Important If new fields are defined, or existing fields are modified or deleted, the validity check must be performed again. If this action is not undertaken by the installer, the fault output remains active.
Easy Teach 3.5.
The Easy Teach function will allow the customer to design a field by physically moving in front of the LMS531 in order to “draw” the desired field. This new field must be within the boundaries of a predefined field acting as a region of interest during the “draw” field. This functionality can be actioned (start/stop) by the digital Input 4. There are three modes available for Easy Teach – these are INACTIVE, LITE (available for PRO and LITE devices) and PRO (just available for PRO device) and may be chosen by users of level Integrator and above.

Generally the automated field generation is started by setting input 4 active and stopped when it goes inactive.
4th
input Activation Easy Teach
0 V Easy Teach Teach-In stopped
24 V Easy Teach Teach-In started
The parameter “Minimum duration” defines the minimum time how long the teaching process will last once the trigger (Input 4) is activated. This parameter will allow the LMS531 to do an Easy Teach without the need to hold the trigger input, only a short single pulse will be required. NOTE: If the user has configured the Input Delay value, the length of the pulse for Easy Teach trigger must be longer.
During teaching process the LED ‘Q2’ is switched on at the device front panel. After finishing, the LED ‘Q2’ flashes for 10 seconds and the field is stored permanently.
3.5.1. Easy Teach ‘Lite’
Only one field can be defined with the Easy Teach Lite mode. This is done by setting angle range, field number, field name, mode and minimum distance(s) to the contour of the field. This mode has 2 functions: Field Contour or Reference Contour.
Easy Teach Lite (Field contour)

3.5.2. Easy Teach ‘PRO’ (PRO devices only)
In the PRO mode up to five Easy Teach fields can be defined for automated field generation over the digital input (see Image 1). These fields require defined background fields as patterns or region of interest. Background / Pattern fields also work as limits for the Easy Teach field. Each Easy Teach field can have its own Pattern field. As a first step, the customer must create one or more Pattern fields defining the maximum borders of the fields, which should be generated in SOPAS ET Field Editor. Next, each Easy Teach fields to be created must be defined or configured. Each Easy Teach field has its own parameters. See image below. All the activated fields will be teach in together once the input 4 is activated, as described earlier.

Example for mode “Field contour”:
Easy Teach field (green) with 200 mm distance to contour.
Some contour values are shorter than the reference field values (grey). At this angular range the start- and endpoints of Easy Teach field (yellow) have the same distance. Due to active Obstruction Protection the Easy Teach field is infringed (distance is shorter than field start points).
Example for mode “Reference contour”:
In this case the contour is free (green).

Obstruction Protection Activated 3.6.
For each Evaluation Case the “Obstruction Protection” is active by default.
Obstruction is signed at LED Q2 3.7.
If during operation mode “Armed” an obstruction occurs (covering device, removing lens cap) it will be signed by flashing LED Q2 during the operation mode “Disarmed”.
Front panel - display activation 3.8.
Front panel display can be enabled/disabled depending on the operation mode, i.e. it will be disabled in ‘armed’ mode and enabled in ‘disarmed’ and ‘setup’ mode.
Automatic field adaption (PRO devices only) 3.9.
3.9.1. The underlying scenario

This feature has been designed for some particular situations. If the LMS531 is setup to perform a façade monitoring, as an example, there will be a field looking down to the ground level. In the case of snow falling, the level of the snow on the ground will slowly raise to a point where it could infringe the monitoring field.
With the Automatic Field Adaption feature the field will adapt automatically to the shape of the slow growing snow, as described in the example.
3.9.2. Configuration
An evaluation case can now be configured so that its linked field will be automatically adapted under certain circumstances, for example grass, snow growing, etc. In the parameterization assistant of an evaluation case the following settings will be shown:
- Enable/disable automatic field adaption
- Set output to signal field adaption
- Set max. possible velocity which determines if field adaption is valid/possible
With this function activated the LMS531 will evaluate the edge of the field for any slow intrusion into the setup field.
The speed of the intrusion is determined by the Velocity setting.
If the speed is exceeded, then the selected evaluation output will be triggered.
When snow or grass is starting to “touch” the field the Automatic Field Adaption will trigger. When this triggering is happening the LMS531 can signalise this triggering via the selected Output.
3.9.3. Adaption of field points
The adaption of field points is triggered by at least one scan point “touching” the edge of the field. The following field points are then adapted:
1) All field points, which “touch” the edge of the field and simultaneously do not exceed the velocity (Attention: the velocity is only considered if the field is adapted towards the LMS531)
2) All the surrounding field points in the near area will be adapted to smoothen the shape. NOTE:
Technical Information

If a point appears in the middle of the field, not on the edges, it will be considered as an intrusion and the alarm output will be triggered.
4. SOPAS ET for Security application
Related SOPAS ET Version is V2.38.2 Build 5824.
Security specific user labels 4.1.
For security application the Standard SOPAS ET user labels are renamed. In case of Security device the labels are:
Default Security
Operator Operator
Maintenance Authorized Operator
Authorized Client Integrator
The meaning of the Security levels are: Operator: - No password required
- Only reading rights.
- Not all parameters are visible.
Authorized Operator: - Only reading rights.
- Not all parameters are visible.
- Can change the password for this user level.
NOTE: Functionality between Operator and Authorized Operator is the same in this software version
Integrator: - Access to all parameters which are needed to startup a Security application.
- Can change the password for this user level.
Changeable password 4.2.
Via SOPAS ET it is possible to change the password of the current user level. A higher user level can change a lower user level. For example, “Integrator” level could change the “Authorized Operator” level.

Authorized Client Integrator client
Parameterization modes 4.3.
The LMS531 can be parameterized via a simple mode called “Standard” or via a more detailed view mode called “Expert”. The extension of device tree depends on the selected mode.
Standard Mode: Quickstart page and Evaluation Monitor is visible
Expert Mode: Standard LMS500 tree is visible
If the mode is changed from “Expert” to “Standard” the user will be asked if the Security defaults should be set. It’s recommended to click YES.
NOTE: If the Security defaults could not be set it is possible that the settings on the Quickstart page are inconsistent with the current device settings (e.g. if in “Expert” mode settings of one Evaluation Case was modified and the object size is not the same for all fields).
