Spotlight
At last it really ISN’T about the gear.
Photographers tend to obsess about their equipment, and “Gear Acqui-sition Syndrome” is a very real problem.
I’m certainly not exempt from it. Few photographers are. And over the years I know I’ve picked up way too many cameras, way too many lenses, way too many filters and accessories of all kinds.
And I mean, sure, the gear can be And I mean, sure, the gear can be fun.
But what excites me about the But what excites me about the photo artistry we find in this mag-azine each month is the way we can move beyond the gear and create great art irrespective of how fast and sharp our lenses are, and with next to no thought of camera brands.brands.
Because when you turn to creating works of digital art, what matters isn’t the kind of camera you used to make the original image, but what you DO with the images once you have them.
What matters is the vision you bring to the canvas after the images are captured.
What matters, really, is having something to say. And saying it as well as you possibly can.
I see works of amazing photoartart being created within our group every day; and finding out that the
original images came from a simple point-and-shoot (or even an old iPhone) makes no difference at all. It’s almost beside the point.
And I love that.
I think it’s awesome.
TooToo many photographers seem to spend more time thinking about their gear than they spend finding something worthwhile to capture. And then, afterward, they seem to spend the rest of their time in Lightroom obsessing over every pixel.pixel.
The artists here are different. They’re more like painters, I think. They (rightly) see the images themselves as only a start-ing point. A place to begin. They want them to be good, sure, and they want them to mean some-thing. But what matters more is the end result: the composition, bringing an array of images to-gether onto one canvas … in just such a way that something extraor-dinary can happen.
Might have begun with a camera. Any camera.
But that hardly seems to matter.
Because in the end, it’s the ART that counts.

The Angel At My Bedside

“ Lately I seem to gravitate toward portraits of women. I’malways looking to conjure up that Rare Bird — the one with
pluck and panache ... And maybe I can make her real, on paper, for someone else to fall in love with. But if not, that’s okay too,
because I’m still smitten every time. ”34
