Global Community Tutorial Explaining Success and Failure—Choosing the Right Tense
Coach Session Discussion Guide General Questions:
What would you like to work on today? Do you have any meetings, presentations, or important phone calls coming up at work that you’d like to prepare for?
What did you complete from the week’s learning plan?
What did you do well?
What did you struggle with?
Language Practice:
I. Present Perfect vs. Simple Past
Present Perfect Use the present perfect tense to describe an action that happened at some unspecified time before now. Positive Statements S + has/have + V (past participle) Jessica has tried the new restaurant. Negative Statements S + has/have + not + V (past participle) Steve hasn't ever been this late before. Questions Has/Have + S + V (past participle)? Have you ever eaten sushi? Simple Past Use the simple past tense to describe an action that began and ended at some specific time in the past. Positive Statements S + V (base form) + -ed We walked to the store this morning. S + irregular V (past tense) The company grew 10 percent last year. Negative Statements S + did + not + V (base form) We didn't buy stock in that company.
Questions Did + S + V (base form)? Did you hear the news about Jeff's promotion?
II. Discuss with your coach and decide if each of the underlined tense forms are present perfect or
simple past, and why that tense is appropriate for the sentence. a. He has visited 35 states in the US so far. b. We read the picture book together last night. c. How long has Harry lived there? d. We drove to the mall yesterday. e. I have visited many countries in Asia. f. My sister was born in Cuba. g. We bought a garden umbrella over the weekend. h. My wife and I have traveled a lot since we retired. i. Ginny and I have spent time in Paris. j. I have lived in four big cities in the U.S.: New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, and San
Francisco.
III. Describe a recent travel experience using the present perfect and the simple past tense forms. Use the following questions to structure your writing:
Which city / country did you visit? What kind of experiences did you have? Where did you go? What did you do? What new food did you eat? Etc.
