External Assessment in Therapeutic CounsellingYou are in the last year of your college training as a counsellor. You were very worried that you wouldnot find a placement, since all your fellow trainees have been seeing clients for months now. Youwanted to work in a hospice, as your brother died last year, and you saw how professionally he wascared for in the local hospice. You feel a mixture of relief, but also disappointment, in that the onlyplacement you have secured is at M.A.Ps, an organisation offering help to clients suffering from mentalhealth problems, in an old mill-town where there is evidence of great deprivation. There are 9 othercounsellors, all of whom are volunteers, but you know that some of them are already qualified. Groupsupervision is offered at the placement monthly and all volunteer counsellors are expected to attendand contribute.

Clients are allowed six sessions and are told that they lose the right for further counselling if they missone session. Your placement manager has interviewed a client and referred him to you. Harry is yourfirst client. The notes she gives you say that he is 38, has experienced drug problems and has beensent to M.A.Ps by his GP. There is a note in the margin: ‘GP says brother committed suicide, and thefamily is not reliable’.

When he arrives, you are shocked to discover that Harry looks about 60. He does not look at all well,is unwashed, and dressed very shabbily. He tells you a life story of neglect and deprivation, of drunkenparents and unsympathetic teachers. He married young (at 18) and his wife left him after five years,taking their three children with her. He has lived alone since then, has not worked for years, and wasgreatly affected by his brother’s death, saying ‘I lost the will to live’.

Harry acknowledges that he drinks heavily. He says that he ‘got in with a bad crowd’ and was involvedin stealing and petty crime. He says that he can’t possibly come weekly, but is not willing to give areason why, and asks if he can come fortnightly. At the end of the session he tells you how grateful heis that you haven’t told him off, or criticised him, and asks you to shake his hand.
