Pub’s heritagebid is rejectedCAMPAIGNERS last nightlearned they had failed intheir bid to protect a pub fromthe bulldozers.

Members of the PotteriesPub Preservation Group(PPPG) applied for the secondtime to English Heritage tosecure listed building statusfor the Coachmakers Arms.

But the organisationclaimed the building, inLichfield Street, Hanley, hadundergone too manyalterations to be protected.

The traditional four-roompub is earmarked fordemolition to make way forthe planned City Sentralshopping and leisure precinct.

A campaign to save the pubwas launched in 2008.

It is believed the buildingwas built in the early 19thCentury and was originallytwo homes. It became a beerhouse between 1860 and 1870.

English Heritage said lastnight: “A pub of this commontype and date would need toretain an almost completeinterior and sufficientlyintact façade to justifyinclusion on the list.”

Mervyn Edwards,spokesman for PPPG, said:

“We thank everyone wh ohas supported the campaign,but the pub’s fate is now inthe lap of the gods.”
