Let’s Play Together

It’s fun to play with my friends.

Part 1: Getting My Friend’s Attention

We play with toys at recess. We play with lots of friends.

Sometimes when I talk to a friend, he does not answer.

Hey – Hey kids – Hey

do you want to play?

I have to get his attention. I have to look at my friend. I have to say his name.

Jordan. Jordan, listen…

I can get in front of my friend. I can look at him and say his name.

Matthew?

Sometimes, I have to keep trying. I can tap my friend on the shoulder. I can look at her and say her name again.

So, to get my friends attention, I need to:

Look at him

Say his name Tap her on the shoulder

Keep trying.

Matthew?

Getting My Friend’s Attention

Look at her

Say her name

Tap her on the shoulder

Keep trying.

“Social Power” Point

It’s fun to play with my friends.

Part 2: Sharing and Taking Turns

Sometimes, my friend has something that I want.

I wish I had a soccer

ball to play with…

I need to use my words to ask for the toy.

First, I’ll look at my friend and say his name.

I’m glad Teddy

didn’t just grab

it from me.

Corey, can I

use that ball?

Then I will ask for the toy. I will put out my hand when I ask for the toy. That helps my friend know what I want.

Shelly, can I use your

game ?

My friend might say, “Sure, I’ll give you the toy”. That’s called sharing.

Kaylie, can I play with

that dinosaur?

Sure, Sami, I’ll give you the

toy.

After a while, I can let my friend have another turn. That’s called taking turns.

Here Greg, you

can have this

back.

Or, if she isn’t ready to share, she might say, “Not right now.”

Not right

now…I’m still

using these.

HINT: If you say,

Not right now.

Use a polite voice.

I can wait a little while. I can play with something else while I wait. Maybe my friend will share the toy later.

I’ll keep playing

with the blocks,

maybe Brendon

will let me play

with the

airplane later.

It is fun to play with friends. Sharing and taking turns with toys means that everyone has fun.

Sharing and Taking Turns: Sharing means letting my friend use something

that I am playing with. Taking turns means that both friends get to

play with the toy. I’ll try to remember the rules about Sharing

and Taking Turns: When I want something my friend has, I can look at

my friend and say his name. I can put out my hand and ask for it. He might say OK and give me the toy – then I can let

him have a turn later. Or, he might say “Not right now”. Then I’ll find

something else to play with for awhile.

It’s fun to play with my friends.

So, What Do You Think? What

should you do if you

would rather just

play by yourself for

awhile?

Sharing and Taking Turns

He’ll give me the toy

I can give him a turn later

I’ll find something else to play with for awhile.

I can ask again later.

If he says “OK”: If he says, “Not right now”:

When I want something my friend has, I can look at my friend and say his name. I can put out my hand and ask for it.
