Lesson 6: Drawing, Painting and Puppetry
CMM204CMM204 – Digital Media Effects– Digital Media Effects
Chapter ObjectivesChapter Objectives
• Basic of creating, combining and modifying shapes
• Creating graphical elements
Topics to be coveredTopics to be covered
• Shape Tool• Pen Tool• Grouping• Shape Effects• Paint Tools• Paint with other effects• Puppet pin Tool• Overlap Tool• Starch Tool
Shape ToolsShape Tools
• Replaces former rectangle and ellipse mask tool with a longer menu of core parametric shapes
Pen ToolPen Tool
• Used to draw mask• Used to draw motion• Able to draw custom shapes• Graph editor paths can also be used
to draw shapes
Fill OptionsFill Options
• Decide if fill is enabled or disabled• If fill is solid color or a gradient• Blending mode and opacity can be
set• Also able to set the fill color
Stroke OptionsStroke Options
• Able to set none, solid and gradient stroke
• Able to set the blending mode• Able to set the opacity• Able to set stroke color • Able to set stroke width using px
Pen Path ShapesPen Path Shapes
• With the Pen tool, you can create freeform shapes
• Able to edit pen shapes– Able to add, delete, move, edit vertices
• Freeform shapes can also be transformed
• Open paths can be used as strokes, map lines and other graphical elements
GroupingGrouping
• Press Ctrl+G to group shapes together
• Able to transform multiple shapes together
Merge PathsMerge Paths
• Is useful when you want just the outline of the composite shape to be stroked
• More control over intersections and fills what what’s provided by the Fill operator’s Fill Rule Popup
Shape EffectsShape Effects
• There are different types of shape effects– Merge Paths– Offset Paths– Pucker & Bloat– Repeater– Round Corners– Trim Paths– Twist– Wiggle Paths– Zig Zag
Paint ToolsPaint Tools
• Three paint tools– Brush Tool
• Able to use like a paintbrush to paint the layer
– Clone Stamp Tool• Able to duplicate a image with a reference
point
– Eraser Tool• Erases any mistakes created or erases any
unwanted portions
Animating StrokesAnimating Strokes
• Various methods to animate the drawing of your brush strokes– Start here, End there– Write on Mode– Paint frame by frame– Use a single brush stroke and
interpolate the shape of the stroke over time
RotoscopingRotoscoping
• Pick a color and brush size of your choice• Set the Mode to Normal and Channels to
RGBA• Set the duration popup to Custom and set
a frame eg.3• At the start of the timeline paint a stroke• Press “2” and paint the next stroke• Continue till you get the desired outcome
Paint with other EffectsPaint with other Effects
• Pick a color and brush size of your choice• Set the Mode to Normal and Channels to
RGBA• Set the duration popup to Constant• Draw a stroke, go to the Path propery in
the timeline and create a keyframe• Go forward in time and create another
keyframe and draw another stroke• You can see the effect where the 1st stroke
interpolate to form the 2nd stroke
Puppet Pin ToolPuppet Pin Tool
• New way to warp layers, including shapes and text layers
• Puppet pins represents points you want to grab and move or you want to stay in place
Keyframing PinsKeyframing Pins
• With an already Puppet pined object• Go to the puppet property followed
by the Puppet pin property• Create a keyframe and move to the
end timeline you desire• Change the puppet pin property’s X
and Y values to your liking
Motion Sketching PinMotion Sketching Pin
• With the already pinned object• Ctrl Click on the Puppet pin, you will
see a stopwatch• The recording will starting till you
release the mouse• You can then edit the Bezier motion
path as you please
Overlap ToolOverlap Tool
• Allows portions of the layer to pass in front or behind other portions
• Used on an undistorted shape• You cannot animate the location of
overlap pins but you can animate their Extent and In Front Values
Starch ToolStarch Tool
• When using puppet pin tool, the shape of the object/character will tend to get deformed and look out of shape
• Using the starch tool we are able to get a more rounded shape
• As with overlap pins, you can drag starch pins to see if a different location will work better
