Myth and the Oral TraditionMyths are very ancient stories, whose authors are unknown, or anonymous.
Myths tell of gods and goddesses, their interventions in the lives of heroes, and
supernatural events.
Oral Tradition• Oral tradition simply means telling
the story through time; this is how myths are developed and perpetuated. A culture’s oral tradition includes its myths and legends, and it also includes its folklore and folktales. Folklore is the broader term that includes traditional beliefs, customs, stories, songs, and dances. Folktales are the stories within the culture’s folklore.
Many myths attempt to explain a belief, a custom, or a force of nature. Across cultures, mythic themes show many similarities. Can you think of any common myths? What about common urban myths? What is the difference?
Legends
• Typically going to be about an important person from history
• Readers are not sure if it’s true; however, it has some level of truth. Legends contain elements of history and fantasy.
• All legends have oral tradition– This means they are told orally before they are
ever written down.

• In legends, humans have exaggerated powers.
