Dear friends in Christ,
The impending arrival of February on the calendar has many of us thinking of Valentine’s Day. While the story of Saint Valentine being martyred for marrying Christian couples in secret is dubious at best (it’s much more likely that he was martyred for trying to convert the Roman emperor to Christianity), Valentine’s Day is a good time to think about relationships. It’s also a good time to think about one of my favorite topics, stewardship.
What does Valentine’s Day have to do with stewardship? Well, as much (or as little) as we want it to. At its worst, Valentine’s Day is about a plastic, artificial sense of romantic love. People in romantic relationships (especially men) are pressured to be romantic and find the perfect gift, and people who are not in romantic relationships are made to feel inferior or ignored. It’s easy to understand why a lot of people want nothing at all to do with a “holiday” like that.
At its best, though, Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for us to stop and reflect on all of our relationships, romantic and non-romantic, current and past. It’s an opportunity to stop and give thanks for the gifts of relationships: spouses, partners, friends, family, coworkers, neighbors. All of these relationships, even the ones that have been broken or ended, are gifts from God, who created us to be in community with one another. Stewarding our relationships begins with giving thanks for them.
It’s also an opportunity to reflect on how we tend and care for those relationships. In his book Five Love Languages, Gary Chapman theorizes that people express and receive love in five ways (words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch) and that expressing love in a way that speaks to the “love language” of the person we love is key to maintaining a healthy relationship. While Chapman is writing primarily for couples in romantic relationships, the underlying foundation of his work is true for all relationships: our relationships benefit when we think carefully about how we maintain them and when we take action to nurture them. This tending and nurturing of our relationships is also a key part of stewarding them as gifts from God.
So, this February, I hope you’ll take some time to reflect on the relationships in your life, to give thanks for them, and to tend and nurture them. In the words of the apostle Paul,
“Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.” (Romans 12:9-11)
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Bob

the 1760s through the middle 1920s.
Salem’s History
From the Archives Committee
Rev. Dr. J. Francis Watson, President of the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Archives Center at Philadelphia, wrote the following comment in the Center’s Advent 2019 newsletter about maintaining church records. “The parish register is the heart of a congrega-tion’s archival collection. It contains the pastoral acts that illustrate the life and history of a congregation: baptisms, confirmations, marriages, funerals, and memberships.” Salem’s archives committee uses these records when a family research request is received. In 2017, Sara Colt from Mission Hills, Kansas, sent a request to research Adam Stover/Stober in Salem’s early records (1770 -1800). Since these were early records, we also searched Hill Lutheran’s records, our mother church, and Rev. John Casper Stoever’s records. We copied the Stover/Stoever/Stober entries and mailed them to Mrs. Colt. She found some new names to the family and recorded marriages which were missing. She responded with a meaningful thank you note stating, “Both churches signify my ancestors’ spiritual commitment and their courage in coming to America.” Along with the note was a monetary gift for Salem’s Preservation Fund, so Salem could continue to preserve her ancestors’ church. So you can imagine our surprise when in December, 2019, a check from Mrs. Colt’s insurance company was received for the Preservation Fund. This was most unusual to receive one, and then the second check from the same individual. We share her family connection to Salem’s history. A very grateful thank-you letter has been sent to Sara Colt.
