FIRST MIGRATION TO THE AMERICAS

-First settlers probably came during the last Ice Age(known as the Pleistocene glacial epoch) that ended about 10,000 B.C.

-

The Earth’s climate became very cold and many large glaciers were formed which caused ocean levels to drop by as much as 300 feet lower than they are today.

-

These first people migrated here and it took a long time.

-Migration is the movement of people or animals from one place to another.

-They were hunters following after BIG GAME or very large

animals.

-A strip of land between northeastern Asia(Russia) and present-day Alaska called the Bering Land Bridge or Beringia is where North Americas first inhabitants(Paleo-Indians) crossed the Bering Strait between 38,000 and 10,000 B.C.

-They were hunter-gatherers or people who hunted wild animals and gathered wild plants for food.-

• Over many years they spread south through current day Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America and all the way down to the southern tip of South America.

-As the temperature of the Earth began to climb around 8000 B.C. the glaciers began to melt raising the ocean levels and covering the land bridge with water.
