What is Learning Management System?

LMS - Information System “Learning Management System is a software

application for the administration, documentation, tracking and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs, and training content.” (Sharma & Vatta 2013:1000)

“The LMS provides a web-based interface with which faculty and administrators can monitor learner progress through reports of enrollments, completions and grades. The LMS also provides a web-based interface for the leaner to enroll in offerings and for online courses to be launched.” (GrayHarrman 2014)

Information System = Information + Technology + People + Processes (Heeks 2006:4)

Thus LMS is

a server-based or cloud-based information system that enables learning environment and its administration through content distribution and managing users.

Common interoperability standards and frameworks for LMS

AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-based training Committee)

IMS (Information Management Standard) or IMS Global Learning Consortium

SCORM

Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM)

Exchange courses between LMSs

Reuse content pieces across different courses

Sequence content tailored to the learner

SCORM as Product of ADL

Advanced Distributed Learning

One more project of DoD

ADL vision: Provide access to the highest quality education and training, tailored to individual needs, delivered cost effectively, anywhere and anytime.”

ADL aimed to produce a set of standards for the e-learning industry that allow various LMSs to “find, share, import, export, and re-use e-learning content with one another.” (GrayHarrman 2014)

This initiative was named SCORM

SCORM Benefits

Provides an object-based approach for developing and delivering instructional content

Allows interoperability of these objects across multiple LMSs

Enables sophisticated learning strategies based on the learner's mastery and progress (individualized learning)

Permits the packing of learning content and instructional strategies for import and export

LMS, CMS, LCMS (EMIS)

LMS – How LMS can be implemented?<Basic Principles>

• Do not have to convert all teaching/learning activities into a LMS

• Conduct a training on LMS from a user-centric perspective (How LMS can help users) instead of a tool-centric perspective (explain the functions of the tool)

Ex) Use a case example and explain how LMS can help teachers store teaching materials at one place and share them with students easily to save their administration time so that they can focus more on engaging with students and improving the quality of teaching

Implementing LMS

Best steps for implementation

1. Assess current management of teaching/learning processes

2. Identify steps that can be integrated into a LMS

3. Choose LMS

Model to keep in mind – Technology Acceptance Model

User's perception of systems Usefulness and ease of use

4. Introduce LMS

5. Conduct a training on LMS

6. Continuous improvement and share good practice among teachers and universities
