Definition

According to Peter Drucker ,"The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers."

According to a Layman, “Leadership is the process of encouraging and helping others to

work enthusiastically towards objectives.

"Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential." -Prof. Warren Bennis

What is leadership ????

Leadership is the initiation of action to solve

a problem

Leadership is directing or controlling the activity of a group

Leadership is influencing the activities of group as it moves toward its goals.

A person who leads others along a way; a guide

Types of leaders FORMAL LEADER A member of an organization who is given

authority to influence other organizational members to achieve organizational goals.

INFORMAL LEADER An organizational member with no formal

authority to influence others, but who has special skills or talents to influence others.

Trait which are essential to be a successful leader It is believed that the leadership traits are

inherited or in born It considers personality, social, physical, or

intellectual traits to differentiate leaders from non-leaders

Leadership behavior - facilitating goal attainment and recruitment of followers regardless of the context (5 usual traits)

Intelligence, self-confidence,

determination, integrity, sociability

Behavioural theory Leadership involves an interpersonal relationship

between a leader and subordinates.

It is proposed that specific behaviors differentiate leaders from non-leaders.

Emphasized on particular behavior by him

The main purpose of this theory is to determine how various kinds of specific behavior affect the performance and satisfaction of subordinates.

Path Goal Theory Path Goal theory is about how leaders motivate

subordinates to accomplish designated goals

The stated goal of leadership is to enhance employee performance and employee satisfaction by focusing on employee motivation

Emphasizes the relationship between the leader’s style and characteristics of the subordinates and the work setting

The leader must use a style that best meets the subordinates motivational needs
