History

Celts gradually infiltrated Britain over the course of the centuries between

about 500 and 100 B.C.

A hunter gatherer society was eventually replaced by more

settled farmers and metal workers. They used to live for

the glories of battle.

The basic unit of Celtic life was the clan. Clans were bound together with other clans into tribes, each of which had its own social structure and customs, and

possibly its own local gods.

The Druids were the prestigious class in

ancient Celtic societies.

They were often the philosophers,

scientists, lore-masters, teachers,

judges and councillors to the kings. The

Druids linked the Celtic people with their gods.

Ireland moves from Celtic polytheism to Celtic Christianity in the fifth century A.D.

Ireland was converted under missionaries from Britain, such as Patrick.

It is believed that Saint Patrick

combined the symbol of Christianity with

the sun cross, to give pagans an idea of the

importance of the cross by linking it

with the properties of the sun.
