La Jolla Christmas Parade Program 2 FRIDAY · DECEMBER 4, 2015LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
Welcome to the 58th Annual La Jolla Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival, “100 Years ofChristmas Cheer,” Sunday December 6th at 1:30 p.m. The Parade route steps off at GirardAvenue and Kline Street, travels down Girard to Prospect Street, and then turns left to finish atthe La Jolla Recreation Center. It begins with an Antique Aircraft Flyover of the Village and paraderoute. We have more than 100 entrants: dozens of floats, bands, marching units, equestrians, and vintage vehicles. Abdullah the Camel, fire engines, and Kung Fu Panda will add to the fun.The highlight — of course, the 1915 Old Black Goose carrying Santa! — is generously provid-ed by the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, and is celebrating its 100th birthday.
The Parade tradition is to honor as marshals organizations or individuals who have made majorcontributions to the community. The La Jolla Recreation Center is honored as Grand Marshal inthis the 58th La Jolla Christmas Parade. It is represented by Herman D. Parker, Park and Recre-ation Director, City of San Diego, and Doug Dawson, Executive Director, the Ellen BrowningScripps Foundation. Also serving as representatives are the Rec Center officers. Honored are theLa Jolla Music Society and its board members Martha Dennis and Dolly Woo (Cultural Marshals);coastal access champion Melinda Merryweather (Traditional Marshal); VADM Walter Davis(Innovation Marshal); Kiwanis of La Jolla, represented by Henry Chiu (Civic Marshal); and theMidway Museum, represented by Mac McLaughlin and Daniel Beintema (Military Marshal).
The Parade ends at the site of the Holiday Festival at the La Jolla Rec Center. It includes a Kids’Zone with pony rides, inflatable bounce houses and children’s educational activities — and, asa special treat, photos with Santa, made possible by La Jolla Sunrise Rotary. The event alsoincludes Beauty Queens and physical activities for kids, as well as FOCAS’ annual dog adoptionevent and information about community organizations at Candy Cane Lane. The festival also fea-tures Stage entertainment, which begins at 2:00 p.m., culminating with the Christmas Tree Light-ing ceremony at the large Rec Center pine tree, decorated for more than a decade courtesy of GDCConstruction and Sunrise Rotary.
Food trucks are a new item this year and will provide quick and easy treats for spectators and
entrants awaiting the Christmas Parade and enjoying the Festival. As you enjoy your day in LaJolla, avoid the manic holiday shopping crowds at local malls and shop and dine with our localmerchants, who are all open and ready to serve you.
Check the event website (www.ljparade.com) for current information about the parade, includ-ing maps, parking, and street closures, and the Festival schedule. The event is fully funded by com-munity donations with no public monies. A list of parade participants can be found on thewebsite, so find people you know and have fun watching them travel the parade route!
Special thanks are offered to the Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival Committee, a smallgroup of dedicated and cheerful volunteers. It has been a privilege to work with them for near-ly two decades, with some of them volunteering for more than 30 years! A special thanks to PatWells, who serves as the heart of the parade, working a myriad of tasks and keeping us allinformed. Along with Mike Carlin, Parade Director, and Gail Forbes, Festival Coordinator, the com-mittee is dedicated to making the 2015 Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival the best ever!
The parade could not happen without sponsorships and donations from local businesses andresidents. Audrey Geisel and the Dr. Seuss Foundation, and John Barbey continue as Parade Spon-sors. The event is fully funded by community sponsors and donors — many of whom give gen-erously year after year. Please review the Parade program and website for a list of sponsors anddonors. Our volunteers work countless hours to organize this event, though the communityappreciation and support makes it all worthwhile.

La Jolla Christmas Parade Program 3FRIDAY · DECEMBER 4, 2015LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
On July 3, 1915, San Diego celebrated the opening of the Com-munity House and Playground, now known as La Jolla Recre-ation Center. Financed by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps,it was the most completely equipped playground and communityhouse in the country.
By 1913 nearly one-half of La Jolla residents described them-selves as working class, employed in some kind of trade. In thatsame year former newspaper editor and investor Ellen BrowningScripps decided to do something for the people of La Jolla. Theresult was a playground and community house serving the work-ing population of San Diego, particularly its children. The La JollaRecreation Center, which was built and dedicated to the City of SanDiego for the children of La Jolla in 1915, is now an historic site.
The La Jolla Recreation Center was designed by master architectIrving Gill, who also designed many other civic buildings in La Jollaand San Diego. Starting in 1910 Irving Gill introduced Early Mod-ernism into the architectural vocabulary of La Jolla and San Diego.Under the patronage of Ellen Browning Scripps, Gill built the LaJolla Women's Club (1913-14), the La Jolla Recreation Center(1915), The Bishop's School (starting in 1910), and numerousother buildings.
Since 1915 the Recreation Center has been the central hub ofthe La Jolla community. In addition to community service events, the Center is host to a wide array of recreational activities. Todayit is an officially recognized part of the La Jolla Cultural Zone andjoins its neighbors in providing enriching programs for all.
La Jolla Rec Center serves more than 25,000 people per year
with scheduled programs, community meetings andother recreational activities, including Yoga, Tai Chi,gymnastics, adult fitness, weight room facilities, ten-nis, two outdoor basketball courts and three play-ground areas. There is truly something for everyone.
Representing the La Jolla Recreation Center todayis Herman Parker, City of San Diego Park and Recre-ation Director, Doug Dawson, Executive Director EllenBrowning Scripps Foundation, as well as La Jolla Parkand Recreation Inc. Advisory Board Members andcommunity children.
As the former Director of Community Services forthe County of Santa Barbara, Mr. Parker managed the County’sparks, beaches, aquatics, housing, libraries, community develop-ment and county arts commission. Prior to serving with theCounty of Santa Barbara, for 21 years Mr. Parker served in vari-ous capacities for the City of Temecula. During his service inTemecula, Mr. Parker was instrumental in the development ofmany community parks, recreation centers and aquatic centers.
Mr. Parker began his career in recreation as a supervisor for theCounty of Los Angeles, working with the City’s underserved youth. He also worked for the City of Riverside Parks and RecreationDepartment.
In May 2014, Mr. Parker was appointed Park and RecreationDirector for the City of San Diego.

One of the region's most beloved seasonalevents, the 58th annual La Jolla ChristmasParade & Holiday Festival, returns to the Vil-lage of La Jolla Sunday Dec. 6.
The parade, beginning at Girard Avenueand Kline Street, will kick-off at 1:30 p.m.The holiday festival at La Jolla Rec Center at615 Prospect St. opens at 2 p.m.
The festive parade, expected to drawupwards of 20,000 spectators, will celebratethe oom-pah of marching bands, the clip-clopof period-attired equestrian teams, elaborate-ly decorated floats and, of course, jolly ole’ St.Nick himself.
The family-friend parade and festival isamong San Diego’s most anticipated and well-attended civic gatherings — a time-honoredtradition that has drawn people from all overfor more than half a century.
This year’s parade features more than 100entrants including bands, floats, equestrians, costumed canines, marching units, digni-taries, fire engines, and more. A complete listof entrants can be found on the website, ljpa-rade.com.
The excitement begins with an AntiqueAircraft Flyover courtesy of the Allen AirwaysFlying Museum led by Bill Allen, followed bythe parade kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
The 2015 Parade Grand Marshal — a dis-tinction honoring an individual or institutionthat has consistently served the community of
La Jolla — is the La Jolla Recreation Center.Believed to be the oldest operating recreationcenter in the country, La Jolla Rec Center willbe represented by City of San Diego Park andRecreation Director Herman Parker.
This year’s diverse parade lineup includesmany return appearances, including 14bands, 14 floats, the returning Chinese LionDancers, an array of beauty queens and—new this year — the Barong Ket, a mythicalBalinese lion-tiger hybrid.
An inflatable replica of the USS MidwayAircraft Carrier will represent the militaryMarshal, the USS Midway Museum, alongwith the museum’s President and CEO, John“Mac” McLaughlin, and Daniel Beintema,President of USS Midway Foundation.
This year’s theme, “100 Years of Christ-mas Cheer,” honors the Centennial Year ofthe Rec Center, and also pays homage to a100-year-old Packard, owned by the KelloggFamily and affectionately known as the “OldBlack Goose.”
As the final entry in the parade, the 1915Black Goose delivers the event’s guest ofhonor, Santa Claus, to La Jolla Rec Center, thesite of the annual Holiday Festival.
This year’s Festival includes vocal andmusical entertainment including perfor-mances by rising teen stars Emmy Perry andWill Ovid, food trucks, pony rides, BrazilianSaddle Horse demonstrations, children’s
games, interactive learning activities, animaladoptions and an opportunity for kids to havetheir pictures taken with Santa! (3:30-4:30p.m.)
The Festival culminates with the lighting ofthe Rec Center Christmas tree at 4:30 p.m.
The La Jolla Christmas Parade and HolidayFestival Foundation, a non-profit 501c(3)Arts and Education Foundation, organizesand runs the event. Ann Kerr Bache is pres-ident of the Foundation, as well as its long-time event chair and lead organizer. Founda-tion members Jack McGrory and Bill Kelloggserve as parade chairs, joined this year byPeter Farrell.
The Parade and Festival is an all-volunteereffort, fully funded by community donations,
with no public monies provided. Donationsare still needed to keep the holiday magicalive. So join your friends and neighbors bydonating today at ljparade.com.
A portion of event proceeds benefit educa-tional programs at La Jolla public schools, andprovide a stipend to all participating schoolbands for bus rentals. Organizers hope toexpand donations for bands and other educa-tional programs at La Jolla schools throughthe event’s nonprofit arts and education foun-dation.

Shopping local keeps the La Jolla holiday spirit alive
By MARTIN JONES WESTLIN
You've heard our ”Shop Local” battle cryone too many times this year, especially withour just- concluded Around the Block featureand our sea of stories designed to reflect LaJolla's considerable business presence. Andnow, you're going to hear it again.
Seriously, now: Where else can you find astightly packed a market as the one in the Vil-lage? The neighborhood has about 1,400 LaJolla Village Merchants Association memberbusinesses strewn over a 30-block radius. That's about 45 venues a block – enough tosatisfy the whims, tastes and convenience fac-tors of the most discriminating holiday shop-pers. Let's take a look at what we mean as youchase after Aunt Maude's new outfit or broth-er Dave's work of art. We promise we'll be brief– but don't let that lull you into thinking yourrange of choices is limited in the least.
TOYSRemember kindly old Geppetto, from the
Carlo Collodi story “Pinnochio”? You should, because Geppetto created the central charac-ter, whose proboscus had a tendency to growevery time he lied. Of course, that never real-ly happened, at least as far as we know – butthe memory of Geppetto lives on at his toyshop of the same name. The place has toys forinfants all the way to big kids over 13 – thingslike shape sorters and plush dog dolls up to an
Awkward Moment game that lets players dis-cuss their reactions to strange situations(come to think of it, that one's probably appro-priate for adults too). Geppetto's is all you needremember for toy hunting in the Village – andno, we're not lying. 7850 Girard Ave. Mon-days-Saturdays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sundays 10a.m. to 6 p.m. (858) 456-4441.
Petite Street Children's Boutique was found-ed only last year – and it's become a neighbor-hood hit already, owing to its specific themeand the wide range to its toys and clothing. The boutique is beach-themed, offering newand gently loved swimsuits for boys and girlsas well as many essential new beach toys. Italso has gently loved wetsuits and new sun-glasses and hats to protect the little ones (don'tforget, they're at the mercy of the same sunyou are). How about baby shower gifts? Petite
Street showcases a nice collection of new-born/baby shower stuff, including a wideselection of toys ranging from arts and crafts, puzzles, bath toys and books, all for ages up to12. 747 Turquoise St. Every day but Sunday,10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (858) 539-0052,petitestkids.com.

Mondays-Fridays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.to 4 p.m., Sundays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 7709 FayAve. (858) 456-0117, lechauvinist.com.
You guys'll probably think we screwed upcalling Fresh Produce a women's clothingstore. Truth be told, we had to look twice atthis one ourselves – but that's the name, andclothing is the game. The heart of Fresh Pro-

Thepeeps there love color, and they want theircustomers to feel confident in their clothes. From casual tops and vibrant dresses to swim-suit cover-ups decorative scarves and stylishpants, Fresh Produce is dedicated to creatinginspirational women’s clothing for you towear every day, including Christmas. (Editor's note: In the spirit of the season,we reprint little Virginia O'Hanlon's inquiryabout the existence of Santa Claus and NewYork Sun editor Francis Church's response.Written in 1897, the editorial holds weighttoday as a powerful piece of Christmascheer.)
Francis P. Church’s editorial, “Yes Virginia,There Is a Santa Claus” was an immediatesensation and went on to became one of themost famous editorials ever written. It firstappeared in The New York Sun in 1897 andwas reprinted annually until 1949, when thepaper went out of business.
Thirty-six years after her letter was printed,
Virginia O’Hanlon recalled the events thatprompted her letter:
“Quite naturally,” she said, “I believed inSanta Claus, for he had never disappointedme. But when less fortunate little boys andgirls said there wasn’t any Santa Claus, I wasfilled with doubts. I asked my father, and hewas a little evasive on the subject.
“It was a habit in our family that wheneverany doubts came up as to how to pronouncea word or some question of historical fact wasin doubt, we wrote to the Question andAnswer column in The Sun. Father wouldalways say, ‘If you see it in The Sun, it’s so,’and that settled the matter.
“‘Well, I’m just going to write The Sun andfind out the real truth,’ I said to father.
“He said, ‘Go ahead, Virginia. I’m sure TheSun will give you the right answer, as it alwaysdoes.’”
And so Virginia sat down and wrote herparents’ favorite newspaper.
Her letter found its way into the hands of aveteran editor, Francis P. Church. son of a Bap-tist minister, Church had covered the Civil Warfor The New York Times and had worked onThe New York Sun for 20 years, more recent-ly as an anonymous editorial writer. Church,a sardonic man, had for his personal motto,“Endeavour to clear your mind of cant.”When controversial subjects had to be tackledon the editorial page, especially those dealingwith theology, the assignments were usuallygiven to Church.
Now he had in his hands a little girl’s letteron a most controversial matter, and he wasburdened with the responsibility of answeringit.
“Is there a Santa Claus?” the child's scrawlin the letter asked. At once, Church knew thatthere was no avoiding the question. He mustanswer, and he must answer truthfully. And sohe turned to his desk, and he began his reply, which was to become one of the most memo-rable editorials in newspaper history.
Church married shortly after the editorialappeared. He died in April, 1906, leaving nochildren.
O’Hanlon went on to graduate from HunterCollege with a bachelor of arts degree at age21. The following year, she received her mas-ter’s degree from Columbia, and in 1912, shebegan teaching in the New York City schoolsystem, later becoming a principal. After 47years, she retired as an educator. Throughouther life, she received a steady stream of mailabout her Santa Claus letter, and to each replyshe attached an attractive printed copy of theChurch editorial.
Virginia O’Hanlon Douglas died on May 13,1971, at the age of 81, in a nursing home inValatie, N.Y.
Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa ClausBy Francis P. Church, first published inThe New York Sun on September 21,1897.
We take pleasure in answering thus promi-nently the communication below, expressingat the same time our great gratification that itsfaithful author is numbered among the friendsof The Sun:
Dear Editor—I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends
say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If yousee it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me thetruth, is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O’HanlonVirginia, your little friends are wrong. They
have been affected by the skepticism of a skep-tical age. They do not believe except they see.

La Jolla Christmas Parade Program 15FRIDAY · DECEMBER 4, 2015LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
They think that nothing can be which is notcomprehensible by their little minds. Allminds, Virginia, whether they be men’s orchildren’s, are little. In this great universe ofours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in hisintellect as compared with the boundlessworld about him, as measured by the intel-ligence capable of grasping the whole oftruth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. Heexists as certainly as love and generosity anddevotion exist, and you know that theyabound and give to your life its highest beau-ty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be theworld if there were no Santa Claus! It wouldbe as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, nopoetry, no romance to make tolerable thisexistence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal lightwith which childhood fills the world wouldbe extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might aswell not believe in fairies. You might get yourpapa to hire men to watch in all the chim-neys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus com-ing down, what would that prove? Nobodysees Santa Claus, but that is no sign thatthere is no Santa Claus. The most real thingsin the world are those that neither childrennor men can see. Did you ever see fairiesdancing on the lawn? Of course not, butthat’s no proof that they are not there.Nobody can conceive or imagine all thewonders there are unseen and unseeable in
the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see
what makes the noise inside, but there is aveil covering the unseen world which notthe strongest man, nor even the unitedstrength of all the strongest men that everlived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtainand view and picture the supernal beautyand glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia,in all this world there is nothing else realand abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives andlives forever. A thousand years from now,Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years fromnow, he will continue to make glad the heartof childhood.

Do the math: Santa works his magic in 24 hours, eh? Humbug!Disclaimer: San Diego Commu-
nity Newspaper Group has expend-ed considerable talent and treasurein the compilation of this story, andits staff and management trust thatits readers will take it for the publicservice it is. The company stronglycautions that this piece containspointed refutations of a legend cen-tral to the world's sense of itself. Itthus disclaims responsibility forpossible repercussions that mighttotally mess with your kid's headfor, like, a really long time.
He's been called everything fromSinterklaas, the Dutch handle for“St. Nicholas,” to Black Peter, whosejob it is to whup up on naughty kidsno matter the time of year – but youand I and God know him as SantaClaus, the year's glad-hander inchief, who stokes his multi-trillion-dollar empire with nothing lessinnocuous than eight arthritic rein-deer and a flaming red parka he pro-lly got on special. He's aged fairlywell since the 1880s, when thefabled Christmas present story madehim the central figure of the secularWestern world. His solid reputationprecedes him from his days as thebona fide St. Nicholas, an ancient
Greek bishop who used to put littlepresents in people's shoes and whopaid young ladies' dowries to savethem from the world's oldest profes-sion (i.e., pillowfighting).
But the real hooker here is thephony-baloney himself, who royallypunks the world every 25th ofDecember with his sleight of handon land, sea and air. He's sworn hislegion of yes-men to secrecy, lininghis legacy with the fruits of theirlabor as they stand at the back of thebus like so many – well – passengers.I beseech you: Don't blame the mes-senger for what you're about to read, but do embrace his message in thetrue spirit of the season.
Think NASA put one over on thecountry when it staged those bogusApollo moon-walks? You ain't heardnothin' yet.
Universe Today says the earthtakes 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.1seconds to complete one axial rota-tion. That's up a mite from, say,600,000 years ago, when our daywas thought to be about 22 hourslong, but it's still nowhere near thetime lard-butt needs to make hisrounds. The current day lasts87,154.1 seconds – and if fatsostops for one of those seconds at
each house, he's still only hit thatmany homes. Assuming eachhousehold includes four members,he's parceled his booty to 348,616.4people, roughly the population ofSanta Ana. Given a global popula-tion flirting with 7.3 billion, it wouldtake him about 277 days, as opposedto the fabled 24 hours, to completehis passes of one house per secondeverywhere in the world.
Figures don't lie, peeps.While we're at it, let's take a seri-
ous gander at that measly excuse fora sleigh, which looks suspiciouslylike a claw-foot bathtub with a dou-ble-wide seat. Claw-foot tubs aremade of cast iron and can tip thescales at 300 pounds – couple thatwith Santa's weight (which theNorth American Aerospace DefenseCommand estimates on its websiteat 275) and the weight of 7.3 bil-lion gifts (assuming each weighsfour pounds), and we're talking a lit-tle over 14 million tons of payload, which would require two SpaceShuttle rockets to achieve escapevelocity, or 25,000 miles an hour.
True, achieving this speed wouldleave Fat-Fat the Water Rat and his

“The UPS Store of Bird Rock hasbeen providing the community withpersonal and small-business needsfor many years,” said owner andmanager Nimisha Amin.
“In fact, 2016 marks more than 30years of operation at the 5580 LaJolla Blvd. storefront. Originally open-ing under the Mail Boxes, Etc. fran-chise, the location was the third to beopened in what would become a global retail chain, offering retailshipping, postal, printing and other business services.
“Through the years, the few committed owners have grown andexpanded the location to meet the needs of the community; and in2003, after having been acquired by UPS, (it) was rebranded as TheUPS Store.”
Today, the business is owned and operated by Nimisha and JayAmin. Nimisha is looking forward to a busy holiday season.

cargo weightless, which is a partial explana-tion for his maneuverability – but to get himinto space, his eight tiny reindeer would haveto generate a force that translates to 3,125miles an hour apiece. At a paltry 425 poundseach, the guys don't stand a chance in hellgetting airborne. Even if they did, breath-able air runs out at 65,000 feet – after that, they're instant reindeer steak, with Rudolph'snose the appetizer.
I swear: It's not me. It's the physics of thething.
And the elves? Don't even get me started. Northpole.com says that Santa contracts
an “unlimited” number of helpers, as it takesa lot of upkeep to prepare for the year's bigday. What nobody ever tells you is that, unlike the South Pole (which sits on a conti-nental land mass), the North Pole is one bigglob of sea ice, whose shift properties make itnearly impossible to build any kind of stationon, let alone one with an “unlimited” cast ofcharacters. The Russians established aweather base there in 2002, and it's general-ly open for a few weeks in the spring – butwith an annual mean temperature of -40,the pole is almost another planet, and theRussians would be hard-pressed to reportanother class of being beyond the polar bearand her kids.
(Full disclosure: Shakespeare says elves areas big as human beings. Assuming that'strue, Fatty's charges would be toast beforethey'd be missed, as humans die long beforethey literally freeze.)
Baseball's “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, whoafter 1919 crashed and burned in a WorldSeries betting scandal.
Alan Freed, the man who coined the term“rock and roll” in the 1950s and was latershamed in a payola controversy.
Milli Vanilli. the pop group whose 1990Emmy was withdrawn following a falsifyingof their voices on an album.
And, of course, the Apollo moon-walkfakes.
Yes, these are among the opprobria thathave shaken this nation to its core over itslong and roily history – but the Santa Claushoax assumes otherworldly implications, asit involves humanity itself.
No amount of money, time or holidaycheer weighs in the conversation. In oneswoop, and year after year, the planet as weknow it is irrevocably doomed. The blamelays squarely at the feet of its seasonalharbinger of faith, hope and trust – and ifyou listen closely, you can hear his maniacalscreed pepper the interminable, weightlessirony.
God bless us, every one. Seriously.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department isonce again working with Toys for Tots to helpbring smiles to Christmas morning. Every SanDiego fire station has a collection box to helpmake contributing to Toys for Tots convenient.
“With a fire station in every neighborhood,San Diego Fire is a great partner in our pro-gram,” said Marine Capt. Evita Mosqueda-Chapman, the San Diego Toys for Tots coordina-tor. “The stations are not only drop-off points, but the Fire Department moves the toys to cen-tral collection points so our Marines can moreeasily get them to the Reserve Center to be sort-ed and distributed.”
Residents can drop off a new, unwrapped toyat a San Diego fire station any time until Dec. 18
and be assured it will get to Toys for Tots.“We’re glad to do our part,” San Diego Fire
Chief Brian Fennessy said. “The Fire-RescueDepartment has worked with Toys for Tots forseveral years, but the credit for this program allgoes to the Marine Reservists.”
Mosqueda-Chapman says their warehouse iscurrently completely out of toys for boys andgirls, ages 10 to 12, and girls 6 to 9 years old.“We want and need toys for all ages, but thewarehouse is bare for those age groups now,”she said.
Toys for Tots started in Los Angeles in 1947and through the years has collected and dis-tributed nearly half a billion toys to less fortu-nate children nationwide.
