Estado actual de lala casa Curutchet
Present state ofthe Curutchet house
4 Manfredo Tafuri y Francesco Dal Co, Arqrtectuta coktetupothed, tomo 2, Aguilar, Madrid,1,989, p. 324.5 Josep Maria Montaner, Despus del Moutmiento Moderno,2da. edicin, Gustavo Gili,Barcelona, 1995, p.46.
Paris in 1930; but it was not until 1935 that he pro-duced the first construction that broke with the asep-tic white volumes of his projects from the 1920's. Hebuilt some weekend homes on the outskirts of Parisemploytng the Catalan vauft -whch Josep Lluts Sen.his collaboator, had taught him to use. nd stonewalls as the principal strucfural elements.
At the same tme, the pantngs of the creator olthe Domin system began to show a diminishingenthusiasm {or the machne. Le Corbusier's canvasesof this period contain bones, human and naturalforms, seashells. Toward the end of the 1940s, hispantings and sculptures evoke a dialec'tic of naturaland artificia!, real and imaginary elements. Theyreveal, moreover, a preocupaton wth both organicand dreamlike forms.
Josep Maria Montaner believes this transition inLe Corbusier's workis due to the influence ofyoungerarchtects such as Oscar Niemeyer or Alvar Aalto. While this may be partially true, there is also a bookof particular relevance in understanding the matureI ^ Corhtrcic. arquitectnico ilimitado, clave de una nueva riqueza arquitec-tnica"6.
7 lbdem, p.161.
Algiers skyscraper project Io that of a tree -in clearly "organic" reference-, and speaks again ofhis invention, detailing its possibi/ltles: "defentonof direct rays; detenton of reflectons from thesea; t also prevents the splashing of raindropsonto the window pane" .
Le Corbusier would go on using brise-so/ei/s.Though he never abandoned the fornal and conceptual features of hs work, brise-so/eiis continuedto be used in various of the architect-philosopher'sprojects. lt was in his first work in the western hem-sphere, the Curutchet house (1949-1953) in La Plata,Argentna, that they were first used in the project fora residence. n this house he combined wth exem-plary mastery the five principles of modern architec-ture and the bnse-so/eil.

Americas for an implacable reason and out of thegreat fondness I feel for their ihings and people; Ihave come to understand, in the lands of thesebrothers separated from us by the silence of theocean, the scruples, doubts, hesitatlons and reasons that motivate the present state of their mani-festations, and I have confidence in the future.Under such light, architecture will be born.
Le CorbusierPrecisions
Le Corbusier first set foot n the western hemi-sphere in 1929. ln Precisions the artist gathered hisimpressions, orginally offered in lectures in varous South American clies. He waiked the streetsof Buenos Aires, La Plata, Montevideo, Sao Pauloand Rio de Janeiro, among other places. Thisencounter wth the realty of the Americas, so var-ied, so c/ose ta, and yet so far from, Europe, sig-nificantly modifed and enriched the artst's urbanconcepts. The delta of the Ro de la Plata stirredhim deeply, and the pampas, seen as a conttnua-tion of the sea on dry land, moved hm to wrte:"They are empty, and at the same time they're not.Nature has granted this encounter between thePampas and the Ocean. lt is an infinite, flat line.Man is here to act, to manifest himself."
The idea of a man who mani{ests himself ver-tically, on a horizontal plane, led Le Corbusier toimagine a Buenos Aires of skyscrapers -very muchalong the lines o{ the Plan de la Ville de TroisMillions d'Habitants and the Plan Voisin- whose planwould represent the Southern Cross. fhe ntention

Hls /ast visit to the western hemisphere was in192, when he visited Brasila on the occasion of aproject for the French Embassy in Brazil. Once more, the leap from the maginaton to the real warldwould not take place.
Why did Le Corbusier accept the project for asmall residence in Argentina at a time o{ suchntense work, in the middle of the construction afthe Unit d'Habitation in Marseilles? fhe reasonsare both moving and ambltious: Le Corbuser trust-ed that by displaytng his work, even on a smallscale, he would succeed in gaining the confdenceof the Argentne government and be granted theopportunity to undertake his greatest dream forthe Americas: the Plan of Buenas Aires, theSouthern Cross.
ln September 1948, Leonor Curutchet and hermother took advantage of a trip to Paris to carryout the wishes of Pedro Domingo Curutchet (1901-1992), brother and son, respectively, of the twowomen. Curutchet was living in Lobera, in theProvince of Buenos Aires, at the tme, but haddecded to move with his family to La Plata, wherehe had studied medicine. He owned a splenddly

ol the plans drawn up by Williams allowed Ungarto continue the constructon of the residence withimpeccable fdeliIy. All that remaned to do was-some of the poured concrete, the brise-so/ei/s andthe carpentry and ronwork.
WthoutWilliams, we would probably know nomore than the score of this "spatial symphony".The conjunction of his personality with those olCurutchet and Le Corbusier made possib/e thrssingular piece of South American architecture.
There s a simple reason for the roundabout way Ihave taken to arrve at a lormal description of theCurutchet house: an understanding ofthe house isimpossib/e f t s not situated in what WllamCurtis has called Le Corbusier's "reconsiderationperiod". This period, characterized by contradic-tons, by a break with modern orthodoxy in searchof a timeless architecture; by the.assimilation ofnew ideas, s in my opinion the rnost original andcomplex of any period in the architecture of thesecond half of the twenteth century. The post-warwork of Le Corbusier shows us an artist of geniuscapable, precisely, of reconsidering"the guiding/ines of his work in search of an archtecture ofgreat expressveness and social content. lt was notin hs theory, but in his practce, that Le Corbusierbecame a critc of modern orthodoxy.
As is we/i known, Le Corbusier would acceptany commisson in order to put his ides of urbanism into effect. The Curqtchet house reveals anarchtect intent on demonstratng the qualties ofthe Vlle Radieuse (1930): a distincton betweenvehcular and pedestran circulation, the isolationof private areas from those of circulation, the inter-action of the building with its natural surroundtngs, and a clear defintion of functional areas.
When Le Corbusier designed the residence, his atelier was busy on the projects for the Unitd'Habitation in Marseilles and the Duval Factory nSaint Di. As a'writer, he was finishing the first partof The lVodulor and The Poem of the Right Angle. He was interested enough in the small projecrforLa Plata to put two of his collaborators, RogerAujam and Bernard Hoeshi, on the job. The sn-gularity of the program (a small surgery clinic andresidence), together with the lmited terrain avail-able, resulted in a complex desgn.
Le Corbusier clearly distinguished the vo/umes of the clinic and the residence. The ground

" (,,post-Functionalism " , C)ppositins, ao. 6, ueva york, otoo de 1976).77 carta de Le cobusie a Pedro curutchet, uncluida en Rvlt 3 . park nspires the design, the house opens to thepark. Le Corbusier makes the dwelling "breathe',through the central void, in which a deciduous treerises to " draw" the park into the interiar, permttngthe sunlght to filter through its leafless branches inthe wintertme and protecting the building fromexcessive sunlght n the summer months.
The residence begins with a smal! entrancehall containng the starway conceived by AmancioWilliams. This leads to a second level occupied bythe living room, dining room, kitchen, lbrary andterrace. The northern fagade (which recelves themost sunlight in the sauthern hemisphere) consistsof brise-so/eiis that throw shadows onto the floors. The view reveals the tree n the foreground andthe park farther back: "the dining room and livingroom apen all of their windows onto the spectac/eoffered by the terrace garden and the park,'.
The top levit houses the bedrooms and theden, formed by straight and curved walls. Thebathroams shaw interestng organic forms and arelined with Venetian mosaics. The structure, whichreveals itself in each space by its circular columns,is a/most put to decorative use.
On vsitng the Curutchet house in 19g4, EnricMiralles wrote: "the contnuity of the floors andpillars of the entrance lead you to discover thetree, which makes you understand the void as a
