STANGER HOSPITAL
O n the 29th of August 2013 Stanger Provincial Hospital launched the Donor Human Breast Milk
Bank which is the first in the Province. This was done in line with the health departments goal of
making breastfeeding the primary option for
newborns. A Donor Breast Milk Bank involves
breastfeeding mothers voluntarily expressing
and donating breast milk, without compromis-
ing their supply for their own babies.
The Management team, hospital board mem-
bers, representatives from the District, Province
and local media attended the presentation at
the Hospital boardroom. The aim of the presen-
tation was to give them an understanding of
what Donor milk bank is all about and the
equipment used in the process. Gagasi 99.5 did
an outside broadcast with Dj Zuki (Dzarling) on
the decks.
The hospital CEO Ms. R.T Ngcobo and Hospital
board chairperson Mr. T. Khuluse spoke to the community through Gagasi FM, informing public of what
donor milk bank is all about and encouraged breastfeeding mothers who have new born babies to donate
milk. Chief Dietician at our hospital Charlene Giovanelli– Nicolson said “pre-term, low birth weight , aban-
doned and orphaned babies would benefit from the bank. Milk will be tested, pasteurized and frozen be-
fore being fed to babies in need”.
The bank is located in the hospital’s neonatal unit where there is a fridge, pasteuriser , printer and data
logger system. We are hoping that donating will begin within the hospital, but mothers willing to donate
from home may apply. For information people are encouraged to contact our Dietetics department on
032—437 6129/6021/6312, the Nursery on 032– 437 6176/6177 or email Di-
etcian.Stanger.Hospital@kznhealth.gov.za. We are hoping to get a lot of breastfeeding women who will
be keen in donating breast milk to the needy babies.
