Introduction Content
Daylighting is essential for healthy living, it is an established fact
that ample daylight improves a general feeling of health and well-
being in the workforce and improves productivity and safety.
Using as much natural light in buildings as possible
has many advantages over using artifi cial lights, if
its penetration is appropriately controlled.
Light is not only an amount of energy,
it also provides us with the eans to reveal spaces
and volumes and interact with our environment.

In a typical building, lighting accounts
for 25-40% of energy consumption!
By allowing more natural light to penetrate
and controlling both its light and heat
components, the fi nancial savings could be con-
siderable.
Daylighting cuts energy use and pollution.
Power plants fueled by oil, coal and gas dump
thousands of tons of pollutants into the environ-
ment every day. By cutting demand for energy
production, we cut pollution, too.
Studies have proven daylighting makes
employees more comfortable and productive.
Reduced absenteeism, employee satisfaction and
higher productivity are all bottom line benefi ts
from the use of natural daylighting. An increase
of just 1% in productivity provides enough
fi nancial savings to a company to pay their entire
energy bill.
In addition to its health and fi nancial benefi ts,
natural light also provides an almost “perfect
white light” that has a number of visual benefi ts.
Best of all, natural light is “of course, plentiful.
People love natural light. Subconsciously, unknowingly, we seek out sunlit places and enjoy spending time in
natural light. Beyond this desire, however, are some tangible benefi ts to adding natural daylighting into build-
ings: Bright Benefi ts
The primary reason for including wall&roofl ights
is to provide a bright, naturally lit interior and re-
duce the requirement for artifi cial lighting.
Daylight has many advantages over artifi cial
light - not least the fact that it is a completely
free, unlimited natural resource. Whilst artifi cial
light is essential, it’s provision uses a lot of energy,
so reducing the requirement will dramatically cut
energy use, and the CO2 emissions which result
from this.
Light panels save energy
and reduce carbon emissions.
Can replace electric lighting 70 to 80%
of the daylight hours while producing
much less heat than electric lighting.

IntroductionEvery workplace should have suitable and suffi cient
lighting, which should, so far as is reasonably practi-
cal, be by natural light. The most eff ective method
of providing even, consistent daylight, particularly
in large buildings, is through roofl ights, which are
up to three times more eff ective than windows
around the perimeter of the building.
Diff used lighting should be used to provide
even light distribution and avoid glare.
Energy savings is the most easily quantifi ably
of the benefi ts. We found that an economically
optimum toplighting system using skylights saved
35-55% of annual lighting energy while having
a much smaller impact on both heating
and cooling energy consumption.
Lower your energy bills up to 55 % with Kingspan
Hybrid Roofl ights.
ApplicationKS1000 RW/HTL is a translucent roof element
that allows natural daylight into buildings,
whilst maintaining thermal effi ciency and
aesthetic appearance. This is a product

IntroductionSustainability is the latest buzzword in not just
the construction industry, but in the wider environ-
ment too. Sustainability however is far from just being
a ‘fad’ it is a way of living and constructing, to help
preserve the environment in which we live. There are
indeed many ways of acting sustainably, but one of
the easiest and cost effi cient ways is to reduce the
energy that we use.
How though, do you reduce the amount
of artifi cial light yet maintain a workable level
of lighting? The answer is to incorporate roofl ight
systems into roof constructions.
By allowing more natural light in to a building,
the need for artifi cial lighting is reduced.
The benefi ts of using roofl ights go further than
just reducing our energy consumption; research
has shown that increased levels of daylight can
aid health, learning and also increase productivity.
The Kingspan Polycarb Roofl ight allows natural
light to penetrate in to the building, therefore
reducing the need for artifi cial lighting.
The roofl ight system, which is designed for use
with the KS1000 RW system, is made from
polycarbonate, a lightweight, high performance, du-
rable plastic. It has superior UV resistance and will not
discolour over time coupled with a U-value
of 1.64W/m²K.
ApplicationThe following specifi cation is for the Kingspan
Polycarb Roofl ight system used for normal
factory or warehouse environments, with
a roof pitch of 7 degrees or above after
defl ection and where the occupants
or processes do not add signifi cant
quantities of water to the air.
System Benefi ts Thermal performance: U-value 1.64W/m2K
Excellent light transmission – up to 63%

LIGHT TRANSMISSION UP TO 63 %
One way of reducing the energy we use
is to reduce our reliance on artifi cial lighting
to light our buildings.
Recycling
The Kingspan Polycarb Roofl ight is 100%
recyclable, which means that at the end of its
life, it can be completely recycled unlike many
composite roofl ights in which only certain
elements can be recycled.
Substantial energy savings can be made
by using waste materials rather than raw materials,
these energy savings can be made from reducing trans-
portation emissions and the processing
of raw materials.
The amount of material that ends up in landfi ll
is reduced. This not only prolongs the life
of the currently diminishing landfi ll sites but
also reduces the amount of gases released
in to the atmosphere from this process.
Polycarbonate also has a scrap value, potentially ren-
dering the process of removing and disposing
of the panel at end of life cost neutral/positive.
Therefore using a 100% recyclable polycarbonate roof-
light has both economic and environmental benefi ts.Kingspan Polycarb Roofl ights allow natural light
to penetrate in to the building, therefore reducing the
need for artifi cial lighting.
Through recycling, a number of benefi ts can be achieved.

The development of sources of renewable energy is a crucial part of the strategy
to cut carbon emissions.
One of the key aspects for the success of integrating sources of renewable energy into
construction programmes is the ease with which they can be incorporated into building design.
Kingspan has a number of solutions which meet this criterion, starting with the building envelope itself.
Kingspan is a leader in the fi eld of sustainable development.
Our long-time commitment to the issues of sustainability and energy
effi ciency is best characterized by the Trias Energetica model,
which promotes three steps towards sustainable energy production:
Reduce use
Use renewables
Be effi cient with the remaining resources
2 Maximise the use of renewable energy sources
1 Reduce demand (energy saving)
3 Use fossil fuels in the cleanest possible way
ENERGY DEMAND
STEP ONE
Energy Effi cient Buildings Renewable Energy
The implementation of Energy Performance
of Buildings Directive has forced energy effi ciency
into the design and operation of residential,
commercial and industrial buildings. The EPBD
requires that all buildings are labelled to show
their energy effi ciency.
With closed-cell, high performance insulation
constituting and integral part of the panel systems,
the IPN-insulated panels provide a particularly thermally effi -
cient and economic method of constructing walls and roofs
of buildings, and ensure an unrivalled thermal performance
throughout the building’s operational lifetime.
The simplest way to reduce energy demand
and assure an A rating for a building is to use
IPN-insulated panel systems.
Testing and fi eld results show that IPN-insulated panels -
Kingspan core product - contribute
to sustainability and energy effi ciency in a variety
of ways.
Energy effi ciency. Insulated panels have a core
of continuous, rigid insulation for industry leading
R- and U-values with superior airtightness
performance, thereby preventing unnecessary
heat transfer.
Recycled and recyclable. The exterior skins
contain a substantial amount of recycled content,
and the panels themselves are recyclable.
Life cycle benefi ts. Insulated panels last as long
as the service life of a typical commercial building,
and continue to provide excellent thermal performance
throughout the building’s operational lifetime, which
is a key requirement for any sustainable solution.
Energy Effi ciency
RatingKingspan designs, manufactures and supplies approximately
20 million m2 of insulated roof, wall and façade panels per
annum and works in close conjunction with leading building
investors, owners, developers, designers and construction
teams for the property market.
This capability has enabled us to introduce a range of fully inte-
grated solar photovoltaic solutions for roofs, walls and façades
from a single, trusted provider, eliminating multi-sourcing,
installation and building envelope integration risks.
Photovoltaic (PV) systems generate clean, infl ation proof
electricity, reduce energy costs and can generate electricity to
be fed into the national grid or used within the building itself.
Even if the sky is overcast, PV is proven to produce electricity.
Every kW produced has zero-carbon emissions,
which signifi cantly reduces the carbon footprint. It limits
dependency on fossil or nuclear fuels and facilitates meet-
ing corporate social responsibility needs. Such an investment
could increase the saleable / rentable value of the building and
would enhance the building’s energy ratings.
Kingspan EnergiPanel is an innovative insulated solar
air heating system designed for roof and wall applications
as a supplement to the main heating system.
Profi led hollows beneath the crowns allow air movement
up through the panel and the air is warmed by
the simple process of using the outer steel skin as
a solar energy absorber. The darker the external colour of
the panel the greater the solar absorption.
Because it is a single component system, Kingspan
EnergiPanel allows fast track construction, so the overall
carbon footprint associated with the instal lation is
minimised. The system integrates seamlessly with other
panel systems from the Kingspan range and is available in
a range of colours.
The Kingspan EnergiPanel combines Kingspan’s exist-
ing state of the art insulated panel techno-logy with a
tested and proven solar air heating capability.
The EnergiPanel Solar Air Heating System has
the fl exibility of being either integrated with the existing
HVAC system or utilised in a standalone heating capacity.
It is available with the Kingspan Total Guarantee covering
both the thermal and structural performance.
STEP TWO
38 39Kingspan Daylighting Systems Let the Sunshine in and brighten your building
The final step is to be efficient with our remaining resources – where fossil fuels have to make up
the shortfall in energy supply, this should be done as cleanly and as sparingly as possible.
The aim of safeguarding the natural resources has led Kingspan to develop a range of solutions that instead
of consuming fossil-depleting energy, capitalize on the most natural of resources – sunlight.
STEP THREE
Reduce demand
The simplest way to save the energy is just to turn off the
lights.
This vision has compelled Kingspan to introduce a range of
products that bring the natural light into the buildings, thus
reducing the need for artificial, energy-consuming lighting.
The Kingspan Polycarb Rooflight is designed for use with
the KS1000 RW insulated panel system.
polycarbonate – a lightweight, high performance,
durable plastic, which will not discolour over time.
excellent light transmission, which makes it pos-
sible to fully exploit the benefits of natural light.
efficient light diffusion, which helps avoid hot
spots and disperse light evenly in sections between roof-
lights.
The economy of using the Kingspan Polycarb Rooflights is
amplified by savings on lifecycle costs – once installed, the
rooflights do not require spare parts or vigilant maintenance.
The Kingspan Polycarb Rooflight is 100% recyclable and has a
scrap value, potentially rendering the process of removing and
disposing of the panel at end of life cost neutral/positive.
Harvesting daylight…
We could reduce our demand for electricity by thou-
sands of megawatts just by opening up our buildings to
daylight – and the Kingspan Wall-Lite, a translucent wall
panel, does exactly that.
A novel concept in sandwich panel façades, the Kingspan
Wall-Lite presents designers with a freedom to create
energy efficient buildings of distinction. It is simple to fix,
light and durable, features superior light transmission and
diffusion combined with excellent insulation properties.
The Kingspan Wall-Lite provides a brilliant alternative to
traditional vertical daylighting systems. It is suitable for
both horizontal and vertical application on all types of
buildings, and integrates fully with Kingspan Architectur-
al Wall panels, Kingspan OptimoTM, and Kingspan’s range
of complete wall and facade systems.
Fully recyclable, the Kingspan Wall-Lite helps lower both
energy operating costs and CO2 emissions, whilst allow-
ing the buildings’ occupants to enjoy and benefit from
high levels of daylight.
Research has shown that increased levels of daylight can
aid health, facilitate learning and increase productivity.
Polycarb Rooflight Wall-Lite
Kingspan Insulated Panels is fully
committed to developing products
that are sustainable throughout their
lifecycle, from manufacture and
application to their disposal.
Kingspan continues to work with
BRE and leading waste management
companies to further quantify and
reduce the impact of its products.
Vision
Energy Efficient Buildings
The research found that demolition results
in the insulation generally going to landfill – whether
it be PUR, PIR, rock fibre or glass fibre. In the light
of this conclusion, Kingspan Insulated Panels continues
to actively explore ways of stimulating the end-of-life
management of its panels, including an on-going
reduction in the environmental footprint of new
products to reduce the future legacy.
Kingspan Insulated Panels has adopted BRE’s
Environmental Profiles Assessment Methodology
to quantify the environmental impact of its panels.
Kingspan Insulated Panels is delighted that its
Architectural Wall Panel and Trapezoidal Roof and
Wall product range have all been reassessed under
the latest Green Guide to Specification and achieved
‘A+’ ratings.
