MATERIAL WASTAGE IN CONSTRUCTION

MOHD KHAIROL IWAN MAT KHAIRIAB03017

DIPLOMA CIVIL ENGINEERING

INTRODUCTION

BACKROUND

• Material wastage in construction are so important thing that are should know to reduce it. Latest, we can see that there are so many factors influence material wastage at construction site such as improper planning by contractor, storage materials, handling material, and etc.

OBJECTIVE

• To successful and effective site to be well coordinate and manage.

• For make working at construction site become easily and excellent to completed.

• Working to the well thought-out plan.

MATERIALS IN CONSTRUCTION• Steel• Concrete• Wood• Asphalt• Polymers• Adhesives• Composites• Geo textiles• Cold-form metals

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE MATERIAL WASTAGE IN CONSTRUCTION:

• Problem with materials• Storage of materials• Handling materials• Schedule materials• Quantities• Types of materials selected for a

job• Unskilled workers• Cutting more than using• Site management• Improper planning

PROBLEM WITH MATERIALS

• Materials not enough to completed the construction working.

• Materials are more than using in construction site.

• Materials in order are not in good quality.• Materials wastage cause it not packed

properly.• Materials like cement in moist air.

STORAGE OF MATERIALS

• The storage of material will depend upon the following factors:• Durability – will it need protection

from the elements?• Vulnerability to damage• Vulnerability to theft

HANDLING MATERIALS

• Careless by workers at construction site.

• Important thing need to be attention because it making a lot of materials wastage.

• Communicate with others at site must be tip top.

• Site engineers must give their most attention in this case.

SCHEDULES MATERIALS

• Arrange by project manager or site engineers.

• Materials are more than using.• Improper planning.

QUANTITIES

• More than using in construction site.

• Careless by quantity surveyor.• Material wastage will effect the

estimated cost.• Improper calculating about

materials will usage to finish up the construction project.

TYPES OF MATERIALS SELECTED FOR A JOB

• Making mistake about types of materials to selected according with work to do.

• Materials selected cannot be use in certain work.

• Buying the expensive materials for unimportant construction working.

• Want the exclusive construction materials.

OCCUR DUE TO IMPROPER PLANNING BY CONTRACTOR

• Careless by contractor.• Improper worker schedules that will

effect the materials in usage.• A well construction activity is

important in order to ensure involved parties completed their work at the time.

SITE MANAGEMENT

• Communicate in others at site are so slowly and down compared in planning.

• 2) Nothing team working at construction site.

• 3) So many ideas in completing the construction building.

EFFECT BY MATERIAL WASTAGE IN CONSTRUCTION

• Buy more than needed• Delays in completion of some

construction activity• Unexpected problems• Increase project cost compared to

estimate cost• Late completion of project

ACTION SHOULD TAKE TO REDUCE MATERIAL WASTAGE IN CONTRUCTION

• Improve communication and productivity on the construction site

• Develop an action plan to minimize waste on site

• Eliminate delay and improve resource management on site

• Advanced in the technology of civil engineering materials.

• Properly in planning• Effectively in site management

FIVE KEY AREAS OF CONCERN FOR A SUCCESFUL SITE ARE

• Managing an effective construction team

• Reducing wastage on site• Enhancing productivity on site• Integrated approach for greater

productivity• Effective planning & control site

CONCLUSION• The economics of the material selection process are

affected by much more than just the cost of the materials. Factors that should be considered in the selection materials from wastage are availability and cost of raw materials, manufacturing costs, transportation, placing, and maintenance. As the industrial revolution took hold, quality materials such as steel could be produced in the quantities for large structures. Beside that, due to the efficient transportation system in the U.S, availability is not as much of an issue as it once was in the selection of a material. However, transportation can significantly add to the cost of the materials at the job site. The type of material selected for a job can greatly affect the ease of construction and construction costs and time. At the same time, all materials deteriorate over time and with use. This deterioration affects both the maintenance cost and the useful life of the structure.
