WoodWorkFind a wide variety of carved wood objects at the Arts center on High street or at Wild Gecko in South Legon (p.26). If you have a little extra time, head north to Aburi carving center, 45 minutes north on the road to Aburi. Here craftsmen can be seen at work on magnificent carvings and drums which are available for purchase. If you are feeling creative, you can actually design your own piece.
BeadS The Artists Alliance collection of beads is impressive (p.27). If you are up for a road trip, head north to Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region, to see its bead market in the center of town, only open on Thursday mornings. There see an overwhelming variety of new and antique beads. If you are interested in seeing the bead making process, head to Odumase-Krobo, the owner of the cedi bead
Factory, who is a true artist, gives personal tours.
FuGu SmocKSFind this traditional wear at the Arts centre or go to the source in Northern Ghana. Daboya is the recognized capital of this art. Here the craft of the fugu, has retained its rich tradition. First the cotton thread is hand spun, dyed and dried. It is then woven by hand into strips. Each strip is then carefully sewn together, then it is finished with intricate embroidery patterns around the collar.
leather goodSAn excellent place to see Ghana’s leather making process is at the Zongo Leather Factory which is a suburb of Tamale in the Northern region. pretty much everyone in this suburb is involved in the process and they are eager to show you every part of it.

buabenG-Fiema monKey
Sanctuary
this sanctuary is home to over 200 geoffroy’s pied columbus monkeys (Ursine colobus) and 500 campbell’s mona monkeys (cercopithecus campbelli) protected by friendly local villagers who for 150 years have considered these monkeys sacred. this is a great example of traditional based african conservation. early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to see the monkeys. expect the mona monkeys to come down out of the trees to greet visitors, while the colombus monkeys are a little shyer and will be harder to see. We recommend a guide (usually a european
volunteer) to get a little explanation and to point out the first few monkeys. contrary to other reports we are told that is not acceptable feed the monkeys bananas, since feeding the monkeys destroys their ability to survive on their own and is not the right types of food for them. the sanctuary is nestled between two villages boabeng and fiema, which are also worth visiting.
tano Sacred grove
enjoy some of ghana’s most beautiful natural landscapes while getting a lesson in the history of the akan people. the akan people believe that their ancestors ascended from a large hole in the ground in a cave about 30 km from
brong-ahafo regionin the heart of the country between tamale and Kumasi, is an often missed region which is both rich in history and landscapes. not only will you find it to have some of the most spectacular rainforests, amazing landscapes and best monkey sanctuary in ghana, it is also home to some of the friendliest ghanaians.

tano, and this area is said to be their first settlement. not only did this area become a sanctuary for the akan people, it also became a natural fort and played a significant role in the bono Wars of the 1800s. one of the first stops while visiting the tano sacred grove is a large rock overhang where one can see reminents of this area’s orginal inhabitants. see stones that were used to grind food, and the ceiling of the overhanging rock blackened from fires. after reaching the top of the cliffs
and experiencing some great views, see the tortoise stone which is a rock that looks like a turtle, an important symbol representing peace for the akan people. try to visit this location around sunset since the light at this time is beautiful and you will see an an amazing amount of bats that take flight for the night.
