PREFACE
This is a collection of papers presented to the IAH 21st Cong
ress—Karst Hydrogeology and Karst Environment Protection to be held
from 10 to 15 October, 1988 in Guilin, China.
This volume contains 263 contributions ( including abstracts )
covering very broad karst areas of Asia, Europe, America, Africa and
Latin America. These papers reflect the latest achievements in both
theoretical and applied researches and also in approach to various
complicated problems by using advanced methods and techniques. A
number of papers attempt to link the hydrogeological problems of
some karst regions with the environmental systems and to discuss
about the development and protection of karst regions.
The volume is divided into two parts, the first several papers
are invited keynotes and the others are grouped into themes under
the headings of :
—Strategy of comprehensive planning and development of karst
areas;
—Regional karstology;
—Regional distribution patterns and systematic analysis of
karst groundwater;
—Parametric study of karst groundwater;
—Assessment of water resources;
—Investigation techniques and the application of mathematical
model.s ;
—Rational development, management and protection of karst and
fissure groundwater;
—Forecast and control of surface collapse; and
.—Hydrogeological mapping of karst areas and Hydrogeological
problems in non-karst areas.
It is hoped that the academic exchange and discussion among the
scientists, of various countries during the Congress would be a
benefit to mutual understanding, international scientific and
technical co-operation and also to the development of hydrogeology
in the world.
Carbonate rocks are extensively distributed in China, from the
Himalayas known as the "Roof of the World" to broad plains,
embracing tropic, subtropic and temperate zones, which are disturbed
by repeated tectonic movements. Diverse karst features are found to
occur in various parts of the country. Hydrogeological research in
karst regions is closely related to the protection and improvement
of the geological environment which the people live in. Guilin is
one of the most representative places of karst landscape in southern
China. It is a great pleasure for the Chinese hydrogeologists to
have the chance of hosting the IAH 21st Congress in Guilin.
The Organizing Committee of the congress is greatly indebted to
the International Hydro.logical Programme (IHP), UNESCO, Third World
Academy of Sciences, the China Association for Science and
Technology, China National Foundation of Natural Sciences and the
Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources for their great support
and financial aid.
