Principal’s Comments
Story Time Prep Transition We have enjoyed the opportunity to welcome pre-school families to participate in Story Time in the library. The Prep teachers, Sabine, Kim, Jessica and Karen together with Sue Austin, have enjoyed the opportunity to read stories and undertake creative activities. On Friday 19th and 26th August and Friday 2nd September we will commence Step Into Prep activities which will include music and dance, art and craft, hands on learning and oral language activities. Please invite any local families to attend as this is a great chance to experience a range of curriculum at Karoo. The sessions will be held from 2.40 to 3.20 p.m. In November we commence Discovering and Learning sessions, with a Parent Information Night on Monday 28th November at 7:00pm. We also continue to conduct School Tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30 a.m. or at other times by arrangement.
We value the work of the KPA in welcoming parents as part of the Prep Orientation programs and helping families to feel connected to the Karoo community.
Working Bee This Saturday a Working Bee was scheduled but will not be able to run due to a limited response. If you have sport and other commitments on a weekend and would like to contribute with weeding, pruning, raking or doing minor maintenance we would welcome your assistance at a time that suits you. Just let us know!
Children’s Book Week 22nd - 26th August We will be celebrating Children’s Book Week with a parade on Friday 26th August at 9.10 a.m. for all of our students in Prep to Year 6. Students are asked to carry a favourite book, dress as a story character or author. There is no need to go to a lot of trouble with an outfit - keep it simple and fun. All short-listed books are on display in the library. During Book Week the library will be open each lunchtime to help our students celebrate the joy of reading and author visits have been arranged for each class level.
Reading to Children Melbourne researchers at RMIT and Melbourne University have proven what parents have intuitively known all along – ‘the more often you read to your children from an early age, the greater the positive effect on their reading and thinking skills. ''It does appear to be the case that children who are read to more often keep doing better as they age than other children,'' said Professor Guyonne Kalb. These findings send a clear message to parents, grandparents, teachers and carers that the benefits of reading, go way beyond a shared bonding experience.''
Key Findings from Professor Guyonne Kalb Research:
1. The frequency of reading to children at a young age has a direct causal effect on their
schooling outcomes regardless of their family background and home-life.
2. Reading to children at age of 4 to 5 years, every day has a significant positive effect on
their reading skills and cognitive skills - language, literacy and numeracy later in life.
While reading to children 3-5 days per week (compared to 2 or less) has the same effect
on the child’s reading skills at age 4-5 as being six months older.
3. Reading to children 6-7 days per week has the same effect as being almost 12 months
older.
4. Children read to frequently at age 4-5 achieve higher scores on the Year 3 Literacy and
Numeracy NAPLAN tests.
5. These differences in reading and cognitive skills are not related to the child’s family
background or home environment.
