Avis and Lorne
Mackie
- fondly remembered -
Lorne Mackie: August 11, 1923 – September 20, 2011
Avis Mackie: April 3, 1928 – August 31, 2014
For decades, Avis and Lorne Mackie represented all that was knowledgeable, generous and dedicated
to the Dog Fancy in Alberta and Canada.
Under the kennel name of O’Leprechaun, Avis and Lorne successfully bred Irish Setters. They had
three Best in Show winners from one litter of Irish Setters in the 1970’s. Lorne was always the
“Breeder-Owner-Handler”, training and field trialing his Irish. He was a field trial judge for both the
CKC and the AKC.
They were a very popular and respected judging team for 25 years both at home in Canada and
internationally. They were designated “Judge Emeritus” by the Canadian Kennel Club.
Avis was always ready to help organize events and specialties and the couple often held Sanction
Matches on their farm by the Bow River
The Mackies were involved in the formation of the Evelyn Kenny Kennel and Obedience Club and
were mentors to countless people in the Calgary community. Part of their legacy can be found in the
community of people who volunteer in the local All-Breed and Breed Clubs to this day.
Avis served on the Board of the Veterinary School at the University of Saskatchewan for many years
and she worked tirelessly in the dog community teaching handling classes, doing show secretarial
work and never accepting payment for her efforts but asking the Clubs to donate to the Companion
Animal Fund at the University of Saskatchewan.
Whether you were a friend or had only brief contact with them, you knew that they were among the
best of us.

CKC Adds New Qualifying Show for Crufts 2016
In collaboration with The Kennel Club, the CKC has added one more avenue in which exhibitors can qualify their dogs for the world's largest benched dog show. The Purina National™ 2015 Show, which will be held on August 2, 2015, in conjunction with the Alberta Kennel Club Summer Classic Show,
has been designated as a qualifying show.
All group-placement winners (i.e., first, second, third and four in each group) will be eligible to enter Crufts in 2016. The Purina National alternates between the east and west, so members at both ends of the country will have an equal
opportunity to qualify.
The designation of a qualifying show is in addition to the system already in place: A dog may qualify for Crufts if it
wins Best of Breed, Best of Opposite or Award of Merit at its Canadian National Breed Specialty or it has placed within the Top 5 in its group according to the
Dogs in Canada Top Show Dog point system.
For more information on Crufts, the UK Pet Travel Scheme requirements and rules regarding competing with cropped or docked dogs, please visit crufts.org.uk.

ATTENTION - ALL FOREIGN EXHIBITORS – EVENT REGISTRATION NUMBER
Effective Jan/1992 all dogs that are foreign-born and foreign-owned and enter Canada for the sole purpose of entering CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) events will no longer require a CKC registration number but will require an ERN - Event Registration Number. This ERN does not register a dog with CKC for breeding purposes as defined in the Animal Pedigree Act but rather enables a foreign-owned dog to be awarded titles by the Canadian Kennel Club. Each dog must have its own number. To obtain an ERN, mail or fax a photocopy of the dog's foreign registration certificate with cheque or VISA/MasterCard number (expiry date, cardholder's name and signature). Provide your complete address for return of the ERN to you. Cost - $59.40 + applicable tax. ERN MUST BE APPLIED FOR WITHIN 30 DAYS OF FIRST DAY OF ENTERING A CKC EVENT. A CKC ERN registration form can be downloaded from the CKC website: http://www.ckc.ca

Planning Your Stay at the Summer Classic The Alberta Kennel Club is thrilled to be holding our show at Spruce Meadows once again! Holding our event there comes with some significant responsibilities for ALL OF US – volunteers and exhibitors alike. You will agree that this is not your normal facility and rules must be followed. You must clean up after your dog. Please Keep Baggies With You At All Times. Discourage the boys from casually lifting their legs on fences, posts, trees or shrubs. Think of this as your home for the weekend – we are sure that you wouldn’t allow it in your house so don’t let it happen on the show grounds.
Failure to pick-up after your dogs will result in automatic expulsion from the show and the show grounds. This will be enforced.
Our aim is to continue building a long relationship with Spruce Meadows and that will happen if we all work together.
Some Basic Requests: 1. Spruce Meadows does not allow overnight tenting (i.e. no tenting on their grounds).
2. Parking will be allowed only in areas designated by the Parking Superintendent.
3. All RV’s must have boards under all of their tires and generators – Sorry, No exceptions!
4. Please be prepared to bring leveling materials for your unit.
5. For all Motor homes, please ensure you have your exhaust pipe extension, this is a mandatory requirement.
6. There will be absolutely NO dumping of grey water or sewage on Spruce Meadows grounds permitted – Thank-you.
7. Water & electrical hook-ups are not available for RV units.
8. Parking is a privilege extended by Spruce Meadows and the Alberta Kennel Club.
9. All parking is at your own risk.
10. Complimentary shuttle services to and from the RV areas and public parking lot throughout the entire day, pick-up and drop off locations will be made available to you upon arrival in your welcome package.
11. We offer Complimentary Showers for our exhibitors – The Alberta Kennel Club greatly appreciates any donations towards offsetting the cost of the showers.
12. Generators - Please ensure they are off between the hours of 11 PM and 6:00 AM – this is the designated “quiet time” for our friends and neighbors.
13. Enjoy yourself! We wish you all the best during the weekend and hope you enjoy your stay with us! Good luck at the show!
