John 21

Wrapping it up

(Joh 20:30) And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples,

which are not written in this book:

(Joh 20:31) But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is

the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through

his name.

(Joh 21:1) After these things Jesus shewed himself again to

the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed

he himself.

(Joh 21:14) This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

(Mat 28:10) Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there

shall they see me.

(Mat 28:16) Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain

where Jesus had appointed them.

(Luk 24:45) Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand

the scriptures,

(Luk 24:46) And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer,

and to rise from the dead the third day:

(Luk 24:47) And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his

name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

(Luk 24:48) And ye are witnesses of these things.

(Luk 24:49) And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but

tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

I. The focus on evangelism

(Mat 4:19) And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

A. Working in the

POWER of the FLESH

(Joh 21:3) Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also

go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they

caught nothing.

(Joh 21:4) But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

(Joh 21:5) Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered

him, No.

(2Co 10:3) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after

the flesh:

(2Co 10:4) (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty

through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

(2Co 10:5) Casting down imaginations, and every high

thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing

into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

(Gal 3:2-3) This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law,

or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the

flesh?

B. Responding

to the PERCEPTS

of the FATHER

(Joh 21:6) And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore,

and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

(Joh 21:7) Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord.

Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for

he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

(Luk 5:1-10) And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would

thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep,

and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all

the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so

that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they

had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said

unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

C. The PRIORITY is the FISH

(Joh 21:10) Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now

caught.

(Joh 21:11) Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great

fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many,

yet was not the net broken.

(Pro 14:4) Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but

much increase is by the strength of the ox.

II. The focus on exhortation

A. Finding our

PURPOSE to FEED

(Joh 21:15) So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed

my lambs.

(Joh 21:16) He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith

unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

(Joh 21:17) He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee.

Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

(Mar 14:29) But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be

offended, yet will not I.

(Mar 14:30) And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That

this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou

shalt deny me thrice.

B. Finding our

PROCESS to giving FOOD

(1Pe 2:1) Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies,

and all evil speakings,

(1Pe 2:2) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the

word, that ye may grow thereby:

(Eph 4:12) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the

body of Christ:

(Eph 4:13) Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the

stature of the fulness of Christ:

(Eph 4:14) That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of

men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

(Eph 4:15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the

head, even Christ:

(Act 20:28-29) Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the

Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of

God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall

grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

(1Pe 5:2) Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight

thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

(1Pe 5:3) Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to

the flock.

(1Pe 5:4) And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of

glory that fadeth not away.

III. The focus on eternity

A. The right PLACE of

our FOCUS

(Joh 21:18) Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou

girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry

thee whither thou wouldest not.

(Joh 21:19) This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God.

And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

(Joh 21:20) Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his

breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

(Joh 21:21) Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man

do?

(Joh 21:22) Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is

that to thee? follow thou me.
