Maxcine was born in Eastland County,
went to school in Comanche County,
and lived on a farm with a barn in a third
county (their farm was sitting on county
lines separating three counties). Born into a family that included
eight children, her mother passed away when Maxcine was
fifteen years old. Though she had little experience, of necessity
she assumed the duties of homemaker and childcare. Later,
Maxcine and Paul Eugene Rowch eloped. Two days after
marrying Paul, he entered the U.S. Army and served for five
years. After WW2, her husband found work with Warren
Petroleum. He was transferred a couple of times during his
career, but was back in Eastland County by the time that he
retired in 1979.
At age fifty, Maxcine went to nursing school to become an
LVN. For the next thirty years she worked in hospitals, nursing
homes, and private homes. When her husband of forty years
passed away in 1981, one of the first challenges she met as a
widow was buying a car and buying a house alone for the first
time in her own name. In 2000, Maxcine moved to Midland to
be near her daughter, who taught history at a private school.
She also had one son who lived in Kentucky after retiring from
the U.S. Navy. Maxcine has five grandchildren and eleven great
grandchildren.
After the death of her husband, Maxcine made numerous
overseas mission trips, including visits to Kenya, Jamaica,
Bulgaria, Guatemala, and Scotland (where she also went
hunting for the Loch Ness monster). In most countries the
mission team was able to openly teach the Bible to others,
but in a few instances they would teach the English language,
using the Bible as their text book. Maxcine was a teacher with
World Bible School for many years. She says that if she could
live outside the U.S., she would move to one of the third world
countries because they are so receptive and appreciative of the
opportunity to study the Bible.
Maxcine’s favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 40:31:
But they that wait on the Lord shall renew their
strength, they shall run and not be weary and they
shall walk and not faint.
