The Governmental Affairs Committee sponsored a debate for the fall election
including all candidates running for Tennessee House Districts 64, 69 and
Senate District 28.
MCCEA committee member, Chaz Molder, said, “A political debate is a perfect
activity for a chamber of commerce. The Pizza and Politics debates were
successful on many levels and provided those in attendance a way to engage in
the political process.”
Underwritten by the Maury County Democratic Party, the Maury County
Republican Party and private citizens, some two hundred community members
were waved into the Memorial Building by Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty to nosh
on tea from Chick-fil-A and pizza from Sano Deli and Truelove’s Pizza and Grits.
The debate questions, delivered individually to the candidates by moderator
and committee chair, Karen St. Clair, were collected from local experts in
the fields of economic growth, health care, higher education, utility services,
agriculture and campaign civility by Governmental Affairs committee members.
Straw polls were taken at the conclusion of each debate highlighting the
community spirited success of chamber committee volunteers who also
sponsored Eggs and Issues and the State of Maury County events.
For participation in the Governmental Affairs Committee,
call Chairman Mike Sharpton.
Congratulations to Jimmy Couch for being awarded Ambassador of the Year!

Past Chair Luncheon
The second annual Past Chair Luncheon of the Maury
County Chamber and Economic Alliance was convivially
casual, bringing 12 generations of past leaders together at
The Alliance for the sake of a vibrant community.
Past President, Terry Cook of Cook Properties said,
“The get together is a great idea - old guys with the
new folks…conversation builds relationships. We also
got a very good update from Brandom,” he continued,
highlighting President Gengelbach’s review of MCCEA’s
accomplishments and challenges for the future.
In service to the Maury Alliance Museum Hall, Kara Huckaby,
Chamber Director, unveiled past presidential photos dating
back to 1950 and stated, “In this way, we stay connected.”
Columbia Codes Meeting
In a presentation to demystify the proposed process of adding
flexibility to Columbia’s regulations and codes, Director of Grants
and Planning, Norman Wright, spoke to MCCEA members at a
downtown luncheon.
“The changes provide a better way to go about business than
what we are doing at present. Options for land use and for higher
quality in architecture, planning and signage give us solutions
without revoking our ordinance completely,” said Wright.
Attendees were urged to consider the enthusiasm expressed
by developers for proposed changes and if not, provide other
resolutions for effective way to influence future planning.
