January 1, 2020 – Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Luke 2:16-21
Catholic Children’s Bible page 1576
Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families page 40-41
Summary Objective: Jesus is God made man, and so his mother is truly the
Mother of God.
Videos
• Why Catholics Call Their Mother Mary (9:18) – For parents, when Catholics call Mary their mother, it may seem like they are taking away some of the respect due to Jesus and giving it to Mary. This is far from the case. Fr. Mike points out two reasons why calling Mary our mother can improve our relationship with Christ, and strengthen our faith life.
• Mary – The Mother of God (6:33) – For kids, a simple draw and tell about why we call Mary our Mother, and why we honor her on January 1st.
• Why we should love the Virgin Mary: Pope Francis minute (2:35) For kids, a beautiful animation where Pope Francis explains why we need to take care of and cultivate our relationship with Mary.
• Hail Mary (Echo Song) (1:52) – For kids, an echo song for kids to sing to the Blessed Mary
Doctrine Summary
Q: How can Mary be the Mother of God?
A: Mary is the Mother of God because she is the mother of Jesus, who is fully God and fully man.
Q: What is the Incarnation?
A: The term Incarnation refers to the fact that Jesus is God made man. The Second Person of the Holy
Trinity (God the Son) took on flesh in Mary’s womb and became fully human without losing his divinity
or being a confusing mixture of divinity and humanity.
Q: Did Jesus give us Mary to be our spiritual mother?
A: Yes, just before Jesus died on the cross he gave his mother to the “disciple whom he loved” (that’s
you and me) to be a spiritual mother for all Christians.
Q: What are the words of the Hail Mary?
A: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit
of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.”

Q: What happens in Baptism?
A: Baptism makes us children of God and part of his family, the Church. It washes away the original sin
that we inherited from Adam and Eve. In the case of older children or adults who are Baptized, it also
takes away any actual sins and the punishment due to them. It makes the Holy Trinity begin to live
inside us.
Q: Who can administer Baptism?
A: A priest or deacon is the usual minister of Baptism. If there is a danger that someone might die
without Baptism, anyone can and should administer Baptism.
Q: How would you give Baptism?
A: I would pour ordinary water on the person’s forehead while saying, “I baptize you in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” All three of these Divine Persons are present at
Jesus’ baptism in the voice, Jesus, and the dove.

A: We experience God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We also experience his mercy
through the kindness, generosity, and compassion of other people. God’s mercy always draws
us closer to him. We can be instruments of God’s mercy by exercising the works of mercy with
kindness, generosity, and compassion.
Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in 1931 and taught her this prayer. Try
