National Coaching Institute BC -

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Albert Einstein

• Your past success guaranties nothing!

• “Change is inevitable, progress is optional….”

•  What is SAS4L? •  What is LTPD?

•  SAS4L = system – structure - alignment

•  LTPD = pathway to: – Life-long participation is sport and

physical activity – Excellence

LTPD is •  Optimal training, competition

and recovery programming with relation to biological development and maturation

•  Equal opportunity for recreation and competition NOT an elitist model

•  Athlete centred, coach driven and administration, sport science and sponsor supported

What is LTPD ?

•  LTPD is not just another plan (for the files)

•  LTPD is a philosophy

•  LTPD is a vehicle for change, culture change in sport

•  LTPD provides a framework for accountability, aligning Games and all sport programmes

•  Identifies the current gaps in the sport system and provides guidelines for problem solving

•  Is a guide for planning for optimal performance for all stages of athlete development

•  Is a framework for full sport system alignment and integration

•  It is designed on empirical / practical coaching experiences and on scientific principles

LTPD

Why do we need LTPD? Universal Sport System Gaps

( “Mind the gap ! “)

Universal Sport System Gaps

•  Young developmental athletes undertrain and overcompete

•  Adult competition schedule is superimposed on young athletes (the system of competition)

•  Adult training programmes are superimposed on young athletes

•  Male programmes are superimposed on females

Universal Sport System Gaps

•  Chronological age versus biological age dominates training and competition designs from ages 11 to 16

•  The "sensitive“ periods of accelerated adaptation to training are not utilized by coaches at the Learning to Train or Training to Train stage

Universal Sport System Gaps

•  The most knowledgeable coaches are coaching at elite level, notwithstanding the most knowledgeable coaches should work at the developmental level (FUNdamental, Learning to Train and Training to Train Stages)

•  Coaching education marginally covers the basic issues of growth and development, maturation

Universal Sport System Gaps

•  Parent's education is neglected with regards to long-term athlete development (nutrition, regeneration, maturation and psycho-social development, etc...)

•  Administrators education is neglected with regards to some of the essentials of technical programmes (The Big Picture)

•  Lack of the integration of sport science, sport medicine and sport-specific technical-tactical activities

Consequences

•  Overcompetition and undertraining*

•  Damage done between age 6-10 and 10-16 cannot be fully corrected (players / athletes will never reach genetical potential)

•  General motor skills are not learned before age 11 for females and 12 for males

Consequences

•  Training is geared for "outcome" and not for "process" for the developmental athlete

•  Training Centres receiving mediocre athletes - regardless of money and expertise, cannot recover from the "damages" of earlier training

10 Key Factors Influencing LTAD (Balyi & Way - 2005)

1. FUNdamentals / Physical Literacy

2. Specialization

3. Developmental Age

4. Windows of Trainability

5. Mental / Cognitive / Emotional Development

6. Periodization Principles

7. Ten year rule

8. System Alignment and Integration

9. The System of Competition

10. Kaizen - Continuous improvement

The orbitale (O) is located on the lower or most inferior margin of the eye socket. The tragion (T) is the notch above or superior to the tragus or flap of the ear, at the superior aspect of the zygomatic bone. This position corresponds almost exactly to the visual axis when the subject is looking directly ahead.

Trainability:

•  Based on chronological age: –  Speed –  Suppleness

•  Based on developmental age –  Skill –  Stamina –  Strength

•  Biomarkers

–  onset of PHV –  PHV –  onset of menarche

Bio markers

Bio markers

System Alignment

• Sport system alignment 1 – Clubs – Regions – Provincial – National

• Sport system alignment 2 – Physical education and school sports – Mass sport – High performance sport

Physical Literacy

System Alignment

• Sport system alignment 3 – Education – Health – Sport and Recreation

•  LTPD is optimal training, competition and recovery programming with regard to developmental age; LTPD takes into consideration early, average and late maturing athletes

•  Easily measurable Biological Markers helping decision making about the optimal content of training during puberty.

•  LTPD exploits the sensitive periods of accelerated adaptation to training during pre-puberty, puberty and early post-puberty.

•  SAS4L-LTPD is based on the concept of Physical Literacy, which provides the foundation for Life-long Physical Activity and High Performance Sports.

•  LTPD programmes are characterized by developmentally appropriate training programmes and developmentally appropriate competition programmes by using “meaningful competitions”.

•  LTPD uses adapted adult periodization principles and programmes to suit the need of developmental athletes thus provides for “proper pubertal periodization” (PPP).

•  SAS4L-LTPD aims for full sport system alignment and aligns School Sport and Physical Education programmes with Recreational Physical Activity Programmes and with High Performance Programmes.

•  SAS4L-LTPD aims for full system alignment and integration and aims to align the Health Sector and the Education Sector with the Sport Sector.

•  SAS4L-LTPD is a tool for change.
