Mapping Area
• 8 day, Level 2 field-course
• Main mapping training course for Geologists
MethodologyMethodology Construct digital terrain model (DTM) using available
topographic data (OS Digimap data) Drape existing field data and Landsat/Aerial photos onto the
DTM Include new DGPS-located contact information mapped
using field-GIS on hand-held computer Use gOcad software create surfaces that represent the
geological structure Develop demonstration exercises for field trip During the field class, in the evenings, the model
progressively revealed to students in step with their own mapping on a lap-top with a data projector
Differential GPS mappingDifferential GPS mapping
• Map boundaries to sub -1m accuracy
• Data direct into GIS in field

What’s nextWhat’s next
• Improved imagery
• Boundaries mapped in detail
• Surfaces created in gOcad™
• Finalised model(s) by end-summer
• Implement on field course (end Sept)
• Improve model based on feedback
e-MapScholar – a resource containing tools, learning and teaching materials that use geo-spatial data, including Digimap data
Invited to provide an Earth Science Case Study In place of ‘Bristol Project’ in Field Studies module, will introduce
a ‘Lake District Digital Geology Project’ Learning outcomes
