ABOUT THE STUDY PROGRAMMECondensed matter physics is the basicscience or development o technologi-cally advanced materials materialsthat have become a natural ingrediento our everyday lie but it also paves
the way or hot new areas such asnanotechnology, renewable energyproduction, and microelectronics, toname a ew. NTNUs masters pro-gramme in condensed matter physicsis or you who want to know more aboutmaterials and their properties andutilities. I you want to explore materialsat the nanoscale, then this is the studyor you.
The study programme comprises a totalo 120 credits, where 60 credits indicatethe normal workload or a ulltimestudent or one academic year. 60 othese credits consist o one compulsoryand seven elective courses (7.5 credits
each) in condensed matter physicsor closely related areas. The other 60credits is the Masters thesis where youwill be working on a research topic withthe help o our academic sta. Every
student admitted to the study program-me will be assigned an academicsupervisor rom a relevant researchgroup at the Department o Physics,NTNU.You can choose a specialization withincondensed matter physics which iseither experimental or theoretical, andexamples o specialization areas areelectron microscopy studies o lightmetals, quantum structure solar cellmaterials, experimental studies onanostructured suraces, and theoreti-cal studies o mesoscopic physics andnanoelectronics.
STUDY ENvIRONMENTThe Faculty o Natural Sciences andTechnology is situated in the NaturalScience building at NTNU, withexcellent working conditions, modernlecture halls, laboratories, study rooms,and computer labs. The language oinstruction is English and the coursescomprise lectures by research sta,calculation assignments and laboratoryexercises assisted by PhD students. ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEThe masters programme is associatedwith the research group in Exercise andExtreme Environments at the Facultyo Medicine. This group searches orthe mechanisms behind limitationsor the supply and demand o oxygentransport, as well as the muscularand neural limitations or strength andcoordination. A main goal is to identiyexercise-training responses, prescribeeective strength- and endurancetraining programmes, and to study theireects on top sports perormance.Furthermore, the epidemic o cardio-vascular and other liestyle-relateddiseases, which is an impending threatto public health and economy, callsor eective, aordable treatment andprevention strategies. The search or an
adequate treatment or these diseasesis a major challenge, and even thoughmedical treatment has been improvedsubstantially, the mortality rate is high.There is a need or a better u nderstand-ing o the underlying mechanisms or
such diseases, as well as the bene-cial eects o physical activity on theorganism. Physical activity is advocatedas an important part o rehabilitationprogrammes or these patient groups.Understanding the mechanismso training-induced (strength andendurance) amelioration o cardio-vascular perormance will help identiytargets or treatment and prevention ocardiovascular disease.
CAREER PROSPECTSAter the MSc some graduates will con-tinue on to the PhD level. Candidat-eswith a background in the health proes-sions can seek leading proess-ional
positions. Students with a universitydegree requently go to teaching posi-tions at college level both in the healthsciences and teacher training, but alsoto gymnasiums, recreational clinics,coaching positions and the health andtraining industry.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEA diverse team o scientists is ready tooer you a two year international, inter-disciplinary Masters programme in closecollaboration with industrial partners(SINTEF and Statoil). You will work in agroup incorporating both Norwegian andinternational students. All teaching isin English. The programme also oersyou the opportunity to experience onesemester in Svalbard (UNIS), an archi-pelago situated in the heart o the Arctic.This programme provides the vital linkbetween environmental toxicology andenvironmental chemistry. The main ocus
will be the ate and eects o pollutants,and how they are distributed in the envi-ronment (air, water, and ood chains) bothon a local and a global scale. You will studythe interaction between environmentaltoxicants and organisms, and how this
impacts on populations and ecosystems.Methods will include eld work and/or experimental exposure studies inlaboratory on individual organisms (invivo) or on cell cultures (in vitro). It is alsopossible to specialise within the area oenvironmental monitoring o organic andinorganic chemical toxicants. This willinclude method development, and qualityassurance using state o the art equip-ment. You will also study a wide range oenvironmental pollutants and methodso pollution control which are o utmostimportance or the management o naturalresources and ecosystems. These skillsand experiences are extremely marketa-ble, making you attractive to a wide range
o employers both in the public and privatesectors.

ABOUT THE MASTERS PROGRAMMEThe two-year Masters programme in Glo-balization consists o two specialisations:
wGlobal Technology Management(GTM), eligible or students with aBSc in a Technology or Engineeringdiscipline.
wGlobal Politics and Culture (GPC),eligible or students with a BA in theHumanities o Social Sciences.

The problem denitions and the needor proper evaluation require compe-tence in many scientic elds: geology,hydrogeology, geotechnics, mechanics,

STUDY ENvIRONMENTThe master's programme in Geo-technics and Geohazards commencedin the all semester 2005, but isounded on long educational andscientic traditions at our university.Geotechnics is a well respected scienceboth nationally and internationally,not least due to more than 50 years o
high-quality research, development andconsultancy oered by the NorwegianGeotechnical Institute (NGI) in Oslo. Thestudy programme is hence oered inclose cooperation with other partners inthe International Centre or Geohazards(ICG). The University o Oslo, NTNU,NGI, NGU and NORSAR are partnersin this centre or outstanding scienticresearch, and researchers and proes-sors in these institutions oer speciallyadapted education, including projectsand master theses with guidance.

Whatis the neural basis or psychologicalphenomena like thoughts, emotions,ideas, memories and problem-solving?Neuroscience technology is rapidlydeveloping, and progress in gene tech-nology, electronics and data processingnow allows researchers to relatemicroscopic activity in individual cellsand cell populations directly to mentalactivity and disease.
This development not only lays theoundation or a better understanding ohuman cognition, but also contributesto preventing and treating diseases inthe nervous system. Disorders o thenervous system are among the mostcommon reasons or hospitalization in
Norway. About 30 percent o the popu-lation will be struck by some disturb-ance in the brain, such as Alzheimersdisease, Parkinsons disease, stroke,schizophrenia, depression, multiplesclerosis or chronic pain disorders. As

TOWARDS A ZERO EMISSION BUILTENvIRONMENTIn a global and European perspective,buildings are accountable or about 40
% o all GHG emissions. IPCC reportspoint to measures in the building sector
as being the most economical (whencompared to other important sectors).The MSc programme aims to educateand train building proessionals in theuse and development o competitivemethods and solutions or existingand new buildings that will contributeto lowering GHG emissions related tothe production, use, management, anddemolition o architecture in a lie-cycleperspective. The Master programmeencompasses residential, commercialand public architecture as well as itseect on the urban and rural builtenvironment.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMThe curriculum consists o 3 consecu-tive semesters with theory and projectcourses, and a ourth semester duringwhich the participants write their MScthesis. Throughout the two years o theMSc programme, a holistic perspectivestresses the many architecturalexpressions and possibilities encom-passed within a zero emission builtenvironment. Within each o the theoryand project courses, high demands aremade towards integrated design
strategies to ensure usability andsynergy o the design with itssurroundings and users. The studentsare continuously trained in interdiscipli-nary co-operation in order or them totranser this integrated design methodinto their proessional practice.
