Instructional Strategies in the Choral Classroom

• Today’s Topics of Discussion: 1. Why do we rehearse outside of class? How do you design rehearsals outside

of class time?/ When do you rehearse?

2. Where are the biggest “gaps” with new members vs. veterans to your program?

3. What are some strategies to close the gaps?

Rehearsals!

In order for a choir to reach its potential several different types of rehearsal are needed:

1. Full choir: All sections all at once. Can be done by one leader/ teacher. Used to paint “the big picture”

2. Sectional rehearsals: Medium sized rehearsals with one section at a time. Requires more teachers/leaders to do more than one sectional rehearsal at a time. Easier to focus on “gaps” in the choir.

3. Individual practice: This can either be a voice lesson format or simply a student practicing at home. This is a good habit to build!

When/ How do you do it?

BN All-State Rehearsal schedule 1st sem

• Students can come any day to work in a practice room

• Additionally, students must practice at home

• Noticeable progress should be made between rehearsals!

UIL Rehearsal Schedule:

• Varsity Mixed music is rehearsed in class. “Gender” music is rehearsed outside of class

Where are the gaps?

Generally speaking, what is the biggest “gap” between a newcomer and a veteran of your program?

So what? Share ideas to fill in the gaps.

For example:

• Tone/ breath support: New singers have trouble singing “on the breath”.

• Exercises to fix: lip buzzing. Switching between vowel and lip buzz/ text and lip buzz.

So Now What?
