GreetingsfromtheUpwardBoundISummerComponent(SY)ItisindeedanhonortorepresentthissummereditionoftheUpwardBoundprogramdueinparttothisyearmarking50yearsofconsecutiveserviceanddedicationtothemanyparticipantsoftheUpwardBoundprogramovertheyears.Thismilestoneisindeedanopportunitytoreflectonthepastwhilealsofocusingonthefutureforyetanother50yearsofservice.UpwardBoundprovidesthesupplementalinstructionandextracurricularactivitiesnecessaryforstudentsintheMississippiDeltatobuildgreatcharacter,discipline,dedication,anddeterminationtosucceedinhighereducation.TheUpwardBoundstaffandIencourageyoutoalwayskeepusinmindwhenitcomestopreparingyoursonordaughterforupwardmobilityfromhighschooltohighereducationranks.Thankyouandhaveagreatsummer!

UPWARDBOUNDI&IITHEUPWARDBOUNDPROGRAM

The Upward Bound Program at Mississippi Valley StateUniversity is comprised of two components. The SummerYearComponent(SY)isasixweeks’sessionwherestudentsliveoncampustogetafeelofcollegelife.

The Academic Year component is made up of twentySaturdays, and students are enrolled in three academicclasses that they are currently enrolled in at their highschools.

The Upward Bound Programs at Mississippi Valley StateUniversity provides services for 165 ninth through twelfthgrade students from Holmes, Humphreys, Leflore, andSunflowerCounties.TheUpwardBoundProjectisfundedbytheU.S.DepartmentofEducation.

“MyexperienceatUpwardBoundsofarhasbeenokay.Iamstilltryingtoadjusttobeingaway fromhome every day. The classes aregoingverywell.TherearealotofthingsIamstilltryingtoadjusttosuchas:walking,manyactivities, meeting new friends, having aroommate. Being away from home is reallyhardforme.

Ihaveneverbeenawayfromhomethislongbefore. We are really being taken care ofeven though we are not at home with ourparents.Thecounselorsanddirectortrytheirbesttotakecareofallofus.Theyalsotrytosupply things we may need. Even though Imissbeingawayfromhome,IamgladthatIamintheUpwardBoundprogramatMVSU.

“MinombreesAlijahJones.ThismeansmynameisAlijahJones.Ihavelearned how to say my name, greetings, alphabet, and something asgreat as thePledgeofAllegiance in Spanish. SeñoraDavis teaches thiseducationalandexcitingprogramatMississippiValleyStateUniversity’sUpwardBound.

Señora Davis speaks French, Spanish and is studying many morelanguages.Sheprovidesproofthatifweputourmindandhearttoitwecan achieve more than we could ever dreamed possible. She teachesSpanishhistoryaswellastheculture.Ifyouareinterestedinlearningacompletely different way of life, being a part of the Upward Boundprogramwillbeagreatexperienceforyou.”

“The teachers and staff of Upward Bound at Mississippi Valley StateUniversityarefirmandniceatthesametime.Theteacherstrytohelpus.Sometimeswearemisunderstood.Theyalsoshowusthat theyarerolemodels.Iknowthattheyreallywanttohelpusasmuchastheycanbeforetheprogramisover.

The teachers are here to help us, when we need it. They help thestudents stay on track anddisciplineuswhennecessary. They also trymanyways to help the students even though sometimes the studentsdon’t see it that way. They may even write the students up whennecessarybuttheystillloveus.Inconclusion,theteachersareniceandfirm at the same time. They love their students. We love ourteachers!!!”

“TherearethreereasonswhatIlikethemostabouttheUpwardBoundprogram; going to class, mingling with my friends, and being in thedorm. First,we learnmanynew things in class and the teachersmakesurethatweunderstandthework.ThisisthemainreasonIlikegoingtoclass.Next,goingtothegymisfun;weexercise,playandgotothetracktowalk.Lastbutnot least isbeing inthedorm. Icansocializewithmyfriends,eatandsleep,andhangoutordowhatever.IlikealotofthingsaboutUpwardBound.Mostofall,goingtoclass,exercisingatthegym,anddoingwhateverinthedorm.”
