Warmer weatherleads to anincrease in out-
side activities, forhumans, pets and espe-cially rattlesnakes.
When the temperaturerises in Lincoln, so doesthe presence of rat-tlesnakes, which arefound in wetlands, deserts and forests, fromsea level to mountain ele-vations. Certain areas ofLincoln are more prone torattlesnakes than othersbut a pet owner mustalways be careful when
out with their pet. About 7,000 to 8,000
humans are bitten byvenomous snakes in theUnited States each year. The best estimate of dogsand cats bitten by ven-omous snakes is about150,000. Dogs and catsare about 300 times morelikely to be bitten by ven-omous snakes than to get
rabies. Avoiding the rat-
tlesnake is the bestmethod of prevention.
Walk along clear path- ways and keep grasseslow and clear of debris.Mow tall grass and weedsto make the habitat lessdesirable for rodents, amajor food source forsnakes.
Keep firewood andother items in a coveredbox.
Do not use large land-scape rocks in open, sun-ny areas as the rocksretain heat to keep snakeswarm.
If you live in an areaprone to snakes, a snakefence is a popular way tominimize your risk. Manyonline companies offersprays or neuro-electricdevices. However, there isno known effective repel-lant for rattlesnakes.
What to do whenyou encounter arattlesnake
Freeze when you hearthe rattlesnake and lookto see where the snake islocated. Make sure thereis only one snake.
Slowly back away
from the snake until youare no longer within strik-ing distance (half thesnakes length) and thesnake stops rattling. Thesnake senses your pres-ence by your body heatand movement.
Do not allow your petto attack the snake and donot attempt to handle thesnake.
Many times, the ownersof dogs bitten are not
there at the time of thebite. Check for signs yourpet has been bitten, suchas puncture wounds, immediate severe painand swelling, lethargy,
weakness and muscletremors.
Animals suspected ofbeing bitten should beseen by a veterinarianand monitored for at leasteight hours.
According to Red RockBiologics, The severity ofa rattlesnake envenoma-tion is related to thespecies of the rattlesnake
involved, the amount ofvenom injected and therate at which the venom iscirculated in relation tothe size of the dog. Inunvaccinated dogs, approximately 20 to 25percent of venomousbites are dry bites, whereno venom is injected.
Prevention is key tohelping pets recover. Vac-
cinated dogs appear topresent fewer and less
severe symptoms. It isreported to delay theeffects and reduce theseverity as well as help theanimal recover morequickly with less pain and
swelling. Vaccinations differ
from antivenin becauserattlesnake vaccine stim-ulates a dog to create hisown antibodies that pro-tect it from bites whereasantivenin is antibodiesmade from another ani-mal (typically horse orsheep) that is injectedinto the animal that has
been bitten. A smaller dog
is always going to have aharder time fighting offthe same amount of ven-om as a larger dog andwill need all the help theycan get.
Any dogs over fourmonths of age that have arisk of encountering a rat-tlesnake should be vacci-nated. Protection fromvaccine boosters lastsabout six months andpets should be vaccinatedaccordingly. A dog shouldget two doses about 30days apart in the initialsequence. Even if an ani-
mal has been bitten, they
may still receive a vacci-nation.
Animals suspected ofbeing bitten by a rat-tlesnake should have vet-erinary attention, regard-
less if the bite occurredseveral hours earlier. Itsnot too late to get your petprotected, as we havealready treated pets forrattlesnake bites and havehad success. Remember, pets are family, too!
Critter Creek specializes in rat-
tlesnake bites and preventative
vaccines. For more information,

elebrating four years in busi-ness last month, Placer Pond
and Water Garden ownersDebra and Gary Sanford are settingnew standards for friendly and will-ing customer service in the Lincolnbusiness community.
Their family business, open sinceApril 2007 at 150 G St., in a smallstrip mall just north of 2nd streetand across from Burger King, con-tinues to be the only business inLincoln specializing in live pondfish and pond supplies.
Debra Sanford spends much ofher time handling the businessretail sales side. Since opening, San-ford admits the poor-performingeconomy has affected their busi-ness.
Weve struggled, she said. Weneeded and received the support ofgreat customers and an under-standing and concession-grantingbuilding owner.
Husband Gary Sanford added
that they are now seeing anincrease in sales reflecting the
recovering economy. And, with thewinter rains soon to be a memory, more customers are planning torestock their ponds with fish andplants.
Both Sanfords boast of several
years experience working with livehobby fish. San Diego-born Gary
got hooked on the hobby when afriend gave him an aquarium whilehe was living in Lake Tahoe. Thatinterest ripened to an avocation ashe learned more about fish healthand the measures necessary for
them to thrive.

Since 2002, Sanford hadbeen working at a pondstore in Rancho Cordova, noting that many of hiscustomers came from thethen-expanding city of
Lincoln. But, in 2006, twofactors combined tocause the Sanfords toconsider opening theirown business.
That August, Debra, amortgage underwriter for10 years, was laid off. Andthe Rancho Cordovapond company that Gary worked for planned amove out of the area.
Considering that theyowned property on Lin-colns Wise Road wherethey had a 2 1/2-acre 25-feet deep pond, theymade a conscious deci-sion to open their ownshop. Using only theirown resources and no
borrowed money they
opened in April 2007.According to both San-
fords, theyve neverlooked back. Fish healthand treatment continuesto be a passion for bothowners. They carryimported Japanese koi, shebumkin, oranda, high
fin banded sharks, catfish
and algae eaters. Theyalso carry an assortmentof pumps, pond linersand medications for boththe prevention and treat-ment of fish diseases.
The Sanfords can diag-nose and treat most fishailments. Parasites,
including flukes, are com-mon. They examine andtreat if necessary allfish they sell. And theyoffer similar services toLincoln customers.
This is one area wheretheir stores physical pres-ence has an advantageover Internet sellers.
Its a challenge com-peting with the Internet,Debra said. But, We offeron-site services you cantget on line.
In addition to in-storesales, Placer Pond offerspond maintenance serv-ices. Sons Shane, 23 andJeremy, 25, perform mostof the outside work withhelp and guidance from
their father.Proud of their service to
the community for thepast four years, the San-ford team boasted theirbelief: If you take care of your community, yourcommunity will take careof you.

With April over and your tax formssafely filed with
either the IRS or the Fran-chise Tax Board, you can
now relax. Not so fast!Your financial life didnt
end. And you can takesome lessons from this years tax drill to use forthe rest of 2011.
An obvious lessonrelates to whether youreceived a refund or sentmoney to the tax collec-tors. Although refunds are
nice, they are unneces-sary. Neither the IRS norFTB pay interest onexcess funds you sendthem. There are betterand more productiveways to save money.
And if you had to sendthem money, maybe a lotof money, then you arehaving too little withheld.
To correct both issues,
file new withholdingforms with your employ-
er. If you file quarterly, adjust those amounts.
For other lessons, wewent to local profession-als for feedback.
According to registeredtax preparer Tom Bauer,Tax credits are in vogue.
But, he cautions, Oftenthey are qualified andrestricted and difficult tounderstand. The list islong and growing - creditfor retirement savings, forhealth coverage, forhybrid vehicles, for resi-dential energy efficiencyimprovements, for solarelectric generation, andon and on.
Certified Public Accountant Jennifer
Jensen agreed.Eligibility for program
benefits can be confusing,she said.
Jensen also encoun-
tered several instances where taxpayers with-drew funds from retire-ment accounts to use inqualified federal pro-grams. Although taxpay-ers often escaped the ear-ly withdrawal fees, they were surprised with anunexpected tax bill.
Bauer and Jensenagreed that taxpayers
should be skeptical intheir expectations ofreduced taxes, tax credits, tax rebates and the like when purchasing prod-ucts or services. Dont befooled by an aggressivesales person offeringinducements. Bauer iden-tifies this a ... moral haz-ard when those promisingeconomic benefits are not
responsible for deliveringthose benefits.
Jensen added that con-sumers should also be wary of media reportsannouncing unrealisticfinancial benefits fromfederal or state programs.
Bauer applauded thoseclients who called to con-firm that what they hadbeen told was a good deal.
Jensen agreed that when in doubt, buyersshould contact their taxadvisors before the deal ismade. This is consistentwith advice provided bymost reputable financialand legal professionals.
When relying on per-sonal income tax counsel, get it from your tax pro-fessional, Bauer con-
cluded. Financial adviceshould come from yourfinancial planner, legaladvice from your lawyer. One phone call can save alot of grief!
