1800 by Sir Frederick William Hershel Thought colors were associated with

heat Used 3 thermometers with blackened

bulbs (measure heat of different colors) Studied beyond red light. It was called “Calorific Rays”. Which is

now known as “Infrared Rays” in the late 19th Century.

Infrared (IR) light is electromagnetic radiation with a

wavelength longer than that of visible light, starting from the

nominal edge of visible red light at 0.7 micrometers, and

extending conventionally to 300 micrometers.

The Origination Of The WordThe Origination Of The Word

The name means below red, the Latin word

“infra” meaning "below". Red is the color of

the longest wavelengths of visible light.

Near-Infrared (0.7 µm – 1.4 µm)

Short-Infrared (1.4 µm – 3 µm)

Mid-Infrared (3 µm – 1000 µm)

Long-Infrared (8 µm – 15 µm)

Far Infrared (15 µm -1,000 µm)

Band Descriptor Wavelength Range

O Band Original 1260 – 1360 nm

E Band Extended 1360 – 1460 nm

S Band Short Wavelength 1460 – 1530 nm

C Band Conventional 1530 – 1565 nm

L Band Long Wavelength 1565 – 1625 nm

U Band Ultra long Wavelength 1625 – 1675 nm
