Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

In the summer of 2009 I designed and assembled this project in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is where I lived and studied. The purpose was to construct a chair using only veneer and glue. In addition, there was a limitation on the use of source materials. The chair was designed, molded and construct-ed during my last two weeks stay in Denmark. The rest of my time was spent traveling to Finland, Sweden and Western Denmark studying and researching the design and construction of the chair to be.

Travels and Research.

I traveled to Helsinki, Finland Stockholm, Sweden and Western Denmark, visiting museums and design show-rooms.

In the outskirts of Copenhagen, Hans Wegner’s original work-shop is now ran by his grand-son. This shop was the most inspiring for me. Orders are put in years in advanced for a chair.

Ideation Sketches.

Since there was a limitation on the use of material, the actual dimensions of each design needed to be created before I moved onto the next design.

A 1/4 scale model was made with veneer strips, This helped me look at what kind of joints were needed to be made.

Mold Assembly.

First step in the process was to create the molds for the chair seat and legs. Steel, particle and mdf boards were the main materials used to create the mold.

With the mold assembled edg-es needed to be heavily sanded down so they would not rip the vacuum bag the seat would be molded in. Felt was added to the inside so the vacuum bag would form tighter around the mold.

The leg mold was cut for a steel strap mold method . Holes were drilled around the edges of the mold for the clamps to hook into during the molding process.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Vacuum and Strap Mold.

The chair seat was made with a vacuum mold process. A custom vacuum bag was made for the chair. With my veneer layers cut and taped together, a urea glue was spread on all 9 layers.

With the 9 layers of veneer sandwiched together between the steel backed chair mold and a steel sheet, the vacuum bag sealed the veneer in tightly and it was then baked for two hours.

The legs were made by the Steel Strap method. I layered 23 lay-ers of veneer for the legs. A steel “strap” was cut to the circum-ference of the mold. Urea glue again was used, this helped “hydrate” the veneer so it could wrap around the mold. Also put into the oven.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Chair Assembly.

When the chair came out of the mold it needed to be trimmed due to shifting veneer layers. A detail cut was made in the mid-dle of the chair, adding a glim-mer of light. Notches were cut into the side of the seat and into the legs to create an interlocking joint. No hardware was needed. Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Here at Pickle we create service apps for a mobile lifestyle. We are committed to providing you with the services you need to get through your day as efficiently as possible. All the while allowing you to have some fun along the way. Our goal is to help you get home to your family and leave the chaotic life of work and business to us!

Market Research.

The market we focused on were business men/women who need to multi-task on the go.

We really focused on time man-agement throughout the day. Bringing efficiency to everyday tasks will help bring the family back together faster.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Problem.

When commuting, rarely can people multi-task, due to having no service on the underground train or not being able to use your hands when driving.

Even getting your morning cof-fee can become a pain and make you late when the lines run out the door.

Staying late is a huge issue especially for parents. We wanted our applications to help take away the stress of staying late at work and get-ting home.

Hypengio.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

“ Real life knocking at your door? We know. It scares the bejeezus out of us too. Now you have Hy-pengio!, the latest game of diversion from your loyal compadres at Madcaps! Hypengio!, is the ulti-mate callback to the carefree days of yore, a simpler time before you developed that slightly abnormal fear of all things responsible. The rules to Hypengio! are easy: play the game kick some metaphorical butt in a fast-paced battle for ultimate bragging rights, plain and simple. This ain’t a game for kids, but it surely ain’t a game for responsible adults, so check that so-called maturity at the door!”

A strong focus was finding a way to effectively interact in a social scenario. Our team through mind maps, found a link to be common childhood memories. We found telling had an instant comforting re-sponse when meeting new people.

Interaction was a huge part of the inspiration for this game. Hands on activities became the solution.

The final solution was a board game. We wanted to incorporate childhood, playground activities into a board game.

The next step was to focus on how to operate the board and create the look. We wanted the style of the game to symbolize candy bright colors. Emphasizing on a black background to really pop the colors out.

Market Research.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Inspiring Games.Early Sketches.

We found our favorite games and what aspects we loved about them so much. Candy Land has colored windy spaces, Cranium’s colorful characters/pieces, Life’s spinner, and collecting pieces in Clue were what we wanted to in-corporate in the game.

Game board designs helped us figure out how the player would move around the board and how they would end up winning the game.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Piece Development.

Player pieces were designed by sculpting them in clay first to feel the weight and the touch. With the final designs made out of clay, I used the clay pieces to make a rubber mold that plastic pieces could be formed from.

A two part rubber mixture was poured over the clay pieces and hardened. I cut the rubber mold in half, took out the clay and then liq-uid plastic could be poured into the mold and a plastic replica was made.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Board Development.

Space sizes, orientations, and colors helped in the game devel-opment.

Final board. All players start in same place and they may move around the board in any direction. Characters, coins, “to do” cards, a spinner, and collecting chips are all apart of the game interaction.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Find

yourself a piece of

paper and two pens and

play a quick and dirty game

of tic tac toe against whoever

you think you can beat. If it’s a

cats game, keep playing until

someone wins. So we’d

suggest winning right

away, but thats just

us.

Been to the opera

lately? Us either. But I

think we’re all due to hear

some of your stellar singing

abilities, so give us your best

improvised opera for the

duration of the timer. Hope

you’re not the fat lady,

otherwise, it’s over.

Poor little you. You

just pulled one of those

real sucky cards that means

you have to miss your next

turn. It’s not that you did

anything wrong, we just like

to make things a little bit

more interesting. And

piss you off.

Final Graphics.

The “to do” cards are very ac-tive and are made to make the player embarrassed, laugh, perform and many more odd crazy tasks. The skull cards either take your turn or coin away.

In order to win the players are to move around the board collecting chips and perform-ing tasks when a card is to be picked up. There are other coins and spaces that make a player start over or can exempt themselves.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Rules.

To win the players must collect all 6 coins. In order to collect a coin the player must pull three cards and complete them all before taking the coin.

When landing on a colored space the player must pull a card but they do not get to take a coin because of it.

At S.A.L. Bikes our mission is to create products that grow out of extensive ethnographic research, re-lationships within communities, and the belief that biking should be accessible and safe for all people. We strive to work hand-in-hand with young Latina women to provide bicycling accessories which pro-mote health and safety.

Market Research.

We went to multiple bike shops in the west side of Chicago, where our mar-ket thrives. Learning basic knowledge of what should be incorporated for everyday riding was gathered.

Looking at many fashion styles and reading bike blogs from Hispanic cultures made us see the potential of biking affordable bike safety acces-sories.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Interviews.

Stephanie Venegas Age:19

“I like to ride my bike, but I don’t really have the extra money to buy safety gear.”

Jennifer Venegas Age :18

“Girls are mixing all kind of materi-als lately. I would love that style in a pair of arm warmers for biking!”

Mayra Blancas Age:24

“The military style is totally in, especially for girls who aren’t toogirly, which are the one who probably would ride.”

Belen Venegas Age :36

“Riding in traffic is too danger-ous for my kids. I worry about them getting into an acci-dent.”

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Ideation.

Many prototypes were made to test function and style for our users.

Adding reflective ware to popular fashion trends cre-ates a safety product instant-ly. In addition this simple solution allows for a low cost product.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Final Designs andDimensions.

Knitted arm warmers, leg warmers, headband, pin, and a scarf were the final acces-sories agreed on by our user feedback.

The design on the scarf is the design background of our logo and will be sprayed with on with reflective spray paint.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

Construction.

Reflective spray paint was applied to many of the ac-cessories, including the zip-per on the leg warmers.Arm warmers were knit-ted then reflective yarn was stitched around the edges.

Ballistic nylon was the mate-rial used to create the inner liner for the arm warmers.

Reflective yarn was sewn onto the end tassels of the scarf.

Industrial Design | ari.jerue@gmail.com

End Product

The arm and leg warmers each have one pocket to insert a cell phone or a bus pass. Promotional bike stick-ers were printed on 3m high-ly reflective vinyl.

Water tight zippers on the back of the leg warmers helps against weather ob-stacles.

Miiu was developed in order to find a solution for the struggles that diversity in early childhood edu-cation and development creates. The educational level is aimed for children 3-5 years old. This age is an age where children are learning about who they are, their family, their next door neighbor, fami-lies in the part etc. Through miiu and miiuworld, children can be lead down a path of acceptance in themselves and in others; by creating a virtual world filled with games that explore multi-cultural edu-cation learning methods.

content

Helps culturally or linguistically different students make a transi-tion into educational mainstream.

Most commonly accepted, includes content about different cul-tural groups in the curriculum and in the educational materials.

Has a much broader impact of increasing culture and reduce racial tolerance. Restructures and desegregates schools.

During the early stages of my research, I felt in necessary to understand what multi-educa-tion means and how it is used in the school systems.

I learned my target market needed to be children 3-5. This is an age where initial interaction between children truly begin. During this age is when many stereotypes take form, a perfect time to guide/teach multicultural education.

My next step was to understand this target market through life-style boards.

Its important to know what at this age do children know. So, during my development I will know where the educational level stands.

Here are a few ways children 3-5 learn and develop individu-ally and socially.

Kid Friendly Websites & Television Shows

Looking through many parent and teacher/school/educational program blogs I found televi-sion shows and websites was a topic of high concern. Parents/teacher want to make sure the content that these kids are view-ing is accurate and appropriate.

On the left are highly rated edu-cational television shows. On the right are images of websites that have simple interaction/us-ability and are kid appropriate/safe.
