The 6 easy steps to choosing castors
1Choose the range based on load rating, style & specialist requirements
2 Choose the wheel based on floor surface
3 Choose wheel diameter
4 Choose the bearing/bush type
5 Choose the type of brake & castor configuration
6 Choosing fittings (3 options)
5
Soft or smooth floorsHard wheels have high load bearing capacity and reduce push effort on carpet and soft surfaces but are very noisy on tiles and other hard surfaces and can also leave indentations on wooden floors.
Variable floor surfaces
Bouncy, elastic tyres help get over bumps. That’s why wheelbarrows and other applications that involve rough ground use pneumatic or rubber tyres.
Road cases are a classic example of tyres that need to adapt to a wide range of floor surfaces. When bands are on the move, their equipment needs to travel over bitumen, carpet, lino, wood and over curbs and stairs. These wheels go everywhere!
Some applications have specific requirements, and we have a wide range of wheels to suit including high and low temperature, wheelie bin wheels, central locking castors, antistatic wheels and many, many more!
Specialised applications
Choose the wheel based on floor surface
2
Rough ground & outdoors Other tyre selection factors:
HardnessThe harder the tyre, the less out-of-round the tyre will be under load, and the smaller the resulting force required to start the wheel from rest on smooth floors.
Resilience (hi-res)The greater the resilience (bounciness/spring) of the tyre, the lower the sustained push effort required to pass over multiple obstacles (rough ground). Why? High resilience materials return energy after compression just like a running shoe (think super balls versus squash balls - same hardness, different bounciness).
Tyre profileDomed tyres require less force to swivel a wheel (and are generally used in our light to medium duty castor ranges) - note that most Fallshaw light to medium duty castor ranges brake on the sides of the wheels and rely on our domed profiles. Flat profiles spread load and prevent damage to floors at high load ratings (and are used in our heavy and very heavy duty ranges).
Particle embedmentRubber tyres such as grey or hi-res blue rubber may not be suitable for dirty floors or areas near tool rooms, as particles such as swarf or pebbles can get stuck in the tyres (which may then cause damage to floors). A nylon or polyurethane tyre material would be suitable due to its harder surface which resists particle embedment.
6
Choose the bearing/bush type
BallUsed in applications where heat can build up due to friction caused by constant movement and/or higher speeds – all towing applications use precision bearings (as the high-tolerance and hardened steel used in the sealed and greased bearings reduces heat build-up that can cause weakening of the wheel). Ball bearings offer the lowest-friction and therefore the lowest push-effort – they are also the most expensive type of bearing in our range.
RollerUsed in high-impact applications (the large surface area of the bearing spreads load and therefore protects against high-impact). Not suitable for high speed (more than 6km/hr).
Plain bush (or bore)Used in corrosive environments (polymer bearings won’t rust). Also used to reduce cost (the cheapest kind of ‘basic’ bush).
4
The larger the wheel, the easier to push and the better the ride comfort (ability to pass over bumps and to minimize vibration). Why? The larger the wheel, the smaller obstacles are as a proportion of the diameter, resulting in greater momentum.
Wheel diameter should be maximised, bearing in mind that: • as a rule of safety a maximum height of 1400mm (4’7”)
is recommended (including the goods being carried) to enable a clear line of sight
• small wheels are sometimes used to reduce the centre of gravity to address tip hazards due to top-heavy loads.

Bolt hole mount
Expanding adaptorsSuitable for installing into tubular legs for wheel diameters of 125mm or less (not suitable for large wheels of 150mm or more).
The low-cost fitting of choice for most tube applications.Compatible with M12 pintles to suit K, M, D, J, ARC, ZEN and M elegance
Pintle boltsUsed when screwing directly into a threaded hole (such as a nut welded into tube) or a threaded tube end.
If fitting to an existing threaded hole, the lowest possible cost is a simple pintle bolt. Not compatible with directional lock.
Threaded tube endsAvailable to suit a wide range of round, square and rectangular tube sizes.
To suit round tube O.D between 20-60mm and square and rectangular in varying sizes between 20-50mm.
Grip neck & friction stemsAvailable to suit very narrow tubes only.
To suit L Series and K Series for tube size I.D 23mm or less.
Solid pintlesIdeal for large diameter wheels & applications that involve long distances or high vibration.
Higher cost than expanding adaptors, but locked solid without the need to be tightened. Used when directional lock orientation or fixed brake pedals need to be permanently locked into position.
Note that 1/2” (12mm) bolt hole castors can be reduced to either 10mm (3/8”) or 8mm with reducing bushes:

M stainless steelStainless steel Our stainless steel castors are the premium castors for corrosive environments. With a wide range of styles and load capacities available, we have castors to suit almost all corrosive applications. All castors in our stainless steel range are completely corrosion-free with all metal components made from stainless steel.
Chemical resistance Chemical resistance of materials used in castors and wheels. The castors and wheels we make have worked well for many years in many uses and places around the world. However, sometimes you may want to apply them in places for more corrosive than the usual industrial environment. We lay out here what can be expected from some of the more severe chemicals used, and ask that if you plan to use our products under severe conditions that you contact us with full details beforehand and we will be pleased to advise you.
Powder coated (available upon request)We also have powder coated castors specially designed for corrosive environments (particularly shower chair applications). Our powder coated castors are first zinc plated and then powder coated so as to better resist corrosion from substances such as alkaline soaps and other cleaning agents. The castors have stainless steel bottom races and twin ball races with stainless steel balls covered by a diaphragm shroud to stop water entering from above (the top race is zinc plated only). The castors are powder coated in Interpon colour “Anodic Natural Matte”. The wheels are available with a plain PBT (corrosion free) bush or a stainless steel precision bearing. Threadguards prevent the build-up of hair and lint.

• Supplied with a test certificate validating compliance to Australian Standards (important for risk management documentation)
• The static collapse load exceeds 3 times the working load
• Wheels 150mm (6”) and 200mm (8”) diameter to safely pass over obstacles without snagging and causing scaffold to tip
• The stem of the castor is 150mm (6”) long, with not more than 3mm (1/8”) of clearance to tube
• An effective wheel/swivel brake is fitted to ensure maximum stability

Bolt hole mount
Expanding adaptorsSuitable for installing into tubular legs for wheel diameters of 125mm or less (not suitable for large wheels of 150mm or more).
The low-cost fitting of choice for most tube applications.Compatible with M12 pintles to suit K, M, D, J, ARC, ZEN and M elegance
Pintle boltsUsed when screwing directly into a threaded hole (such as a nut welded into tube) or a threaded tube end.
If fitting to an exisiting threaded hole, the lowest posible cost is a simple pintle bolt. Not compaitble with directional lock.
Plate mount
For plate sizes see page 9.
Choosing fittings (3 options)6Option 1
Option 3For equipment that has a smooth flat base such as a sheet of wood or steel
Washer mount (for bolt hole)
WasherUsed when mounting bolt hole castors into applications that do not have a tube.

Y Core pneumatic castorsWith many sizes available these rigs are made with either plastic, steel or premium semi-pneumatic wheels to suit your application and work environment.
KNOThis knobbly pattern is often preferred for outdoor use, good for gravel or uneven terrain.
ZGGZigZag weave Grey rubber- non-marking of floors.
HWYJagged lines on a thick, 6 ply tyre designed to have a higher load rating for industrial work sites.
LUG&LGGGeneral purpose, outside use. Strongly marked cross lines on a fairly flat tread surface. Good for running in a straight line. Use LGG code for grey rubber (non-marking of floors).
RIBStraight lines.Common in wheelchairs and light duty trolleys that need a softer ride.
INDThe normal industrial type tread, a round profile with an even pattern for general use.
DMD & STRChunky Diamond OR Star shaped pads on a flatter surface. Often used in rougher construction sites. Good for softer grass surfaces but may become clogged with mud.
The pneumatic wheel code convention:
3.5” wide Star Tread pattern
4” diameterPlastic Rim
20mm I.D steelCone bearing
About pneumatics:
Plastic centred tube type wheels
Plastic centred pneumatics are supplied with butyl rubber seamless (butt-joined) tubes as standard. These premium tubes provide greater reliability and longer life than cheaper alternatives. Tubes can be replaced if originals are punctured (see spare parts). Plastic centred wheels are the low cost alternative, with excellent performance in wet and corrosive environments.
Semi-pneumatic puncture-proof wheels
Polyurethane foam-filled tyres are the premium ‘pneumatic’ (or semi-pneumatic) wheel option: the wheels are puncture proof and provide the greatest performance and reliability. Semi-pneumatics are fitted to two piece wobble-free steel centres. Manufactured from 1.8mm steel.
Steel ‘split rim’ tube type wheels
Supplied with tubes for high performance and improved weight carrying capacity. These wheels can be retrofitted with tubes (see spare parts) if original tyres are punctured. Steel centred wheels provide higher load capacity and reliable long life performance. Sizes up to and including the 500x6 are manufactured from 1.8mm steel, and the 650x8 is of 2mm thick steel.
Caution: black rubber can mark floors.

Semi-pneumaticPuncture-proof wheels
Semi-pneumatic wheels - puncture proof tyres:
Polyurethane foam-filled tyres are the premium ‘pneumatic’ (or semi-pneumatic) wheel option: the wheels are puncture proof and provide the greatest performance and reliability. Semi-pneumatics are fitted to two piece wobble-free steel centres. Manufactured from 1.8mm steel. [NOTE: some of the cheaper centres on the market are manufactured from steel as thin as 0.6mm]
Bearings:‘Deep Groove’ shielded bearings fitted to a toughened heavy duty housing enables true running and extra strength (NOTE: Deep groove bearings can last up to 3 times longer than normal pressed bearings).
Tyres: 4 ply for longer, rougher life (many imports use 2 ply). For wheels pulled or pushed at low speeds (not driven) the tread pattern is not critical. The following are standard; other patterns can be offered by negotiation.

Pneumatic wheels - steel centred
WARNINGDo NOT inflate over recommended tyre inflation pressure (30 psi).Do NOT allow tyre pressure to drop bellow 20 psi or wheel may deflate and become very difficult to reinflate. If you allow the tyre to go flat and you are unable to reinflate it then you may need to buy an inner tube to be retro fitted to the wheel (see page 49 for spare parts).USE OF PNEUMATIC WHEELS OTHER THAN AS RECOMMENDED CAN BE DANGEROUS.
Traditional ‘split-rim’ steel centred pneumatics (with inner tubes):
• Split rim strong wobble-free wheels. Centres up to and including the 500x6 are manufactured from 1.8mm steel, and the 650x8 is of 2mm thick steel (NOTE: -some of the cheaper centres on the market are manufactured from steel as thin as 0.6mm)
• High engineering standards for wobble-free wheels• High quality butyl rubber seamless (butt-joined) tubes
Bearings: ‘Deep Groove’ shielded bearings fitted to a toughened heavy duty housing gives true running and extra strength (NOTE: Deep groove bearings can last up to 3 times longer than normal pressed bearings).
Tyres: 4 ply (6 ply on HWY tread) for longer, rougher life (many imports use as lit-tle as 2 ply thickness). For wheels pulled or pushed at low speeds (not driven) the tread pattern is not critical. The following are standard; other patterns can be offered by negotiation. It is normal for air filled wheels to lose tyre pressure over time even if they are not being used and it’s important for your safety that you ensure that the wheels are pumped up to their recommended PSI before use – alternatively you can use our semi-pneumatic puncture proof wheels in applications that require wheels never go flat.
* ID of bearing is reduced by inserting flanged nylon bush into the standard bearing - add 4mm to hub width
These wheels are used in our Y series castors. See page 21 for size, mounting & product codes

High & low temperatureBackground:Our standard wheels and castors have a temperature range of 5°C to 60°C (41°C to 140°F). Within this range our products work normally for their full working life. For applications with temperatures outside this range we make specialised high temperature wheels designed to withstand temperatures of baking ovens.
High temperature use:The customer must specify the temperature and type of application before ordering to ensure that the appropriate wheel type is selected. As temperatures increase wheels become weaker and this lowers the load capacity. In static (non-moving) applications with sustained high temperatures over long periods of time the material will begin to deteriorate, which shortens the working life of the wheel. Fallshaw make three different wheel types designed specifically for use in high temperature environments. These specialised wheels use standard lithium complex grease (STABUTHERM® GH 461) which has excellent water resistance (24hrs at 90°C), bearing retention and long life.
1) Glass filled Nylon 150 - 210°C (300 to 410°F):The best choice for Hospitality based applications such as ‘food baking’ ovens. It can withstand sustained high temperatures and is gentle and quiet on most floor surfaces. Fibreglass reinforced nylon wheels are the preferred wheel for extended periods of up to 210°C (410°F) (assuming most of their life is spent outside the oven), and for short periods up to 230°C (446°F).
2) Phenolic 100 - 300°C (570°F)Phenolic is more brittle than Glass Filled Nylon and it has a shorter life cycle but can go up to very high temperatures. Phenolic is a good choice for light duty Industrial applications with very high temperatures such as ovens used for curing paint. The load capacity decreases from 125kg at 100°C (212°F) to 40kg at 300°C (570°F) therefore it is very important to ensure that the load capacity of the trolley fits within the appropriate temperature and load capacity. Phenolic wheels (with special inorganic fillers and PTFE bushes) are preferred for extended periods up to 280°C (536°F) assuming most of their life is spent outside the oven and for short periods up to 300°C (572°F).
These have a thick cross section, but are more brittle than either nylon or ordinary grades of Phenolic. WARNING: Phenolic wheels are not suitable for medium duty applications or applications where wheels are subjected to impact such as when a trolley is rolled down steps.
3) Cast Iron 200 - 400°C (390 - 725°F):The best choice for Industrial based applications such as ‘paint curing’ ovens and also for use in sustained high temperature environments. It can withstand extreme high temperatures as well as higher load capacities than all other wheel types. Cast Iron wheels do not have bearings. They have a plain bore fitted with an axle spacer that is lubricated with high temperature grease. This grease can be used up to 230°C (446°F) for long periods. For temperatures that exceed 230°C (446°F) a more exotic grease is required. The Production Manager must be notified of this prior to placing the order and the customers required temperature noted on the picking slip once the order is placed. For sustained high temperature use, we offer a range of cast iron wheeled castors used with high temperature grease. WARNING: Cast Iron is heavy, noisy and may damage concrete floors and other floor surfaces.
Low temperature use:Below 5°C (41°F) you must specify temperature of use at the time of ordering. The standard grease we use in our castors is a lithium complex grease. This has excellent water resistance, bearing retention and long life. But below 5°C (41°F) it begins to stiffen quickly, and will soon freeze the bearings so that neither the castor swivels nor the wheel bearings revolve. If specified at the time of ordering, we use a special aeronautical grease which is a synthetic oil with a microgel thickener. This is compounded for use down to -30°C (-86°F), and will need to be refreshed every 6 - 12 months, but will continue to work effectively in chilling rooms, freezing stores and outdoor winter use in northern countries where ordinary greases would be useless. As the temperature becomes lower, the softer rubber and polyurethane treads on our wheels become less elastic. For example, the polyurethane used on the ‘H’ series slowly stiffens from +20°C (+68°F) down to -20°C (-68°F), but then rapidly stiffens until at -50°C (-122°F) it becomes brittle. As temperature goes below 5°C (41°F), nylon can become brittle (particularly if it is kept for long periods in the very dry air in freezing rooms). At such times we recommend fibreglass reinforced wheel, which can be used down to -30°C (-86°F).

‘D’ section (hollow)Normally placed around the edges of the trolley (between corner buffers) to prevent damage to door jambs, etc.Fitted by pushing a (off-cut) metal strip along the centre of the section and screwing through into the side of the trolley. The head of the screw will pop through the outer rubber leaving a small hole.If the strip is to be fitted on a rounded corner, this should be of at least 50mm radius to prevent buckling of the strip.

Buffers - legRound TPE (Thermo-Plastic Elastomer)These are used to prevent damage to corridor walls. The buffers are placed onto tubular legs just before the castors. When a trolley approaches a wall the buffers make contact first and freely revolves on the tubing, thus rolling the trolley along the wall so it causes no damage. In the case of 25.4mm (1”) square tubing the urethane buffers are supplied with a 38mm (11/2”) hole, together with a ‘dress-cap’ with a 25.4mm (1”) square inner and a 38mm (11/2”) round outer.

Premium rubber wheel150kg capacity, 125mm diameterThe ultimate supermarket wheel:This twin precision Q ball bearing wheel uses engineering grade polymers for the centre material with a thick (35mm) natural rubber tyre. The use of high grade rubber combined with the thickness reduces vibration and shock from being transferred through the trolley to the user.

PU tyre on nylon centre100kg capacity, 125mm diameterNot recommended – but very traditional:PU wheels are widely used in supermarket applications due to the high-wear characteristics. However, we do not recommend this wheel because the wear characteristics are similar to our premium rubber wheel (MSQ125G) but the shock absorption and load capacity are much less with a much higher price.

Travellator wheel60kg capacity, 125mm diameterBest-quality travellator wheel:This wheel uses high-strength, high-abrasion-resistance PU moulded over engineering-grade nylon. The grade of PU used is quality-critical since it is the perfect grade to both resist the tyres: splaying, bending and chipping. Quality is essential in this safety-critical application since poor-quality wheels could lead to injury or death.

Advertised catalogue towing capacity assumes an incline of 20 and a friction coefficient of 0.5 (i.e a dry surface such as concrete or bitumen). If the floor surface is slippery then the advertised towing capacity will reduce.
Caution: beware of floors that are greasy or wet. Spilt petrol is a particular hazard.

Castor configurations affect towing:
• Four swivel castors will not trail properly behind the towing unit - they will cut corners rather than follow the unit. They will also tend to ‘whip’ - to over correct any sideways displacement and sway from side-to-side as they travel.
• If two fixed castors are used at the rear of the trolley it eliminates the whip, and improves trailing and towing.
• An ideal configuration is to mount 2 swivel castors 1/6 of the length of the trolley from the front of the trolley and two fixed castors 1/3 of the length of the trolley from the rear. This gives little whip, and good trailing. Note though, that such trolleys should not have a heavy load concentrated at the rear end or they will tip backwards.
These problems become more acute if more trolleys are linked in a train. We offer fixed wheel skate hitch (pictured) accessories to correct this problem for situations where it’s not feasible to replace two of the four swivel castors on an existing trolley fleet.

Conditions of useProperly chosen, fitted and maintained products will give many years of trouble free performance. The information in this catalogue makes this possible. If you do not correctly choose, fit and maintain these products you may release the manufacturer from liability to you. Please consider the supplied information carefully.
1) General useThe castors and wheels supplied by us are generally interchangeable, and are attached to trolley, furniture, industrial containers and similar products to make them mobile. Unless specified otherwise in our catalogue, our products must not be used at a speed exceeding walking pace, and not under continuous motion.
2) FittingWhen selecting a castor or wheel it is necessary to consider all aspects as shown in the catalogue. For satisfactory use, correct fitting is essential, ie:• Correct and secure fitting to the article;• The fixing position must have adequate strength and material for secure fitting;• The function of the castor must not be changed nor affected by the fixing;• the swivel action axis must be vertical at all times;• Fixed castors must have their wheel axles in alignment;• If all swivel castors are used, then they must be similar in mounting heights and offsets;• If fixed castors are used with swivel castors, they must be compatible, and as recommended by us. 3) Outdoor use & corrosive environmentsWhen castors are used outdoors in coastal areas or in corrosive environments, special products have to be specified and warranty periods will vary. Corrosive environments will require our stainless steel range. A chemical resistance table shown on page 16 of this catalogue describes the performance of various materials when exposed to corrosive conditions. A three year warranty period applies for applications or environments where all castor materials are rated as ‘good’. A one year warranty period applies for applications or environments where all castor materials are rated as ‘fair’ or ‘good’. No warranty applies for applications or environments in which a castor material is rated as ‘poor’. In corrosive applications or environments not described in the table, please seek advice from Fallshaw technical staff.
4) High/low temperatureFor use in temperatures below 5°C (41°F) and above 60°C (140°F) the efficiency of the castor can be impaired, particularly the normal load capacity as published can be affected when used in temperatures below/above those stated herein. Special wheels and castors can be specified - see pages 44-45.
5) Pneumatic wheelsDo NOT inflate over recommended tyre inflation pressure (30 psi). The load and cold inflation pressures imposed on the combination of tyre and wheel must not exceed the recommendations, even though the tyre is approved for a higher load or inflation pressure.
6) ComponentsComponent parts are assembled into a complete castor or wheel. The manufacturer is only liable for the original component parts making the complete product. You must allow for all possible loads when selecting products, otherwise use increased safety factors.
7) MisuseMisuse occurs if wheels and castors are used other than specified for their intended use. Do not misuse the castors or wheels. The word ‘misuse’ can be defined as: overloading, unsuitable flooring, excessive temperatures, failure to release brake, exposure to caustic substances, excessive shock loading, ingression of foreign objects into wheel treads, excessive speeds, changes made to the component parts and assembled castors not previously agreed in writing with the original manufacturer.
Maintenance & FittingUnder average conditions of intermittent use, Fallshaw castors will run for 5 years without maintenance. If the castors are in constant use, this reduces to 1 year.
Correct fitting:Castors will not swivel properly unless they are mounted vertically. Otherwise they will track to one side.Heavy trolleys need plate mountings, but the base of the trolley must be strong enough to withstand the load. Never mount a plate castor by three bolts only. Never skimp on the mounting base. You can get up to 8mm (5/16”) of adjustment with washers, or an off cut of tube tightly jammed between leg and castor - but do not let it float. Tighten tubular fittings firmly, but do not over-tighten.You should retighten castors after 3 months of use, and annually after that. We recommend ‘3 finger’ tightness, ie the amount of torque you can get onto a standard spanner using your 3 middle fingers.
Tube Fittings: Medium duty castors are often mounted into tubular legs. But again, it is important that these legs stay vertical. We recommend that the leg never extend more than 125mm (5”) below the nearest support, and (apart from the lightest uses), the tube should be 1.4mm thick or more. Thinner gauges often split. If you wish to use lighted gauge in the rest of the trolley, insert a sleeve for at least 150mm (6”) where the castor is mounted.
Never put a round expanding fitting into a square tube as when the trolley hits a bump, the tube is likely to elongate, and the castor may fall out. We do have square fittings, and ask that you use them. If for some reason you need to put round into square, then weld an insert sleeve of round tube (remember - our smallest fitting needs 3/4”ID). When using Directional Lock (DL) type castors it is best to use the solid swivel stem and weld or bolt it in - screwed types can become misaligned. To achieve the best performance from the larger 175mm (7”) and 200mm (8”) castors use solid stems.
When fitting expanding stem castors, make sure that the fitting is fully inserted into the tube, with the tube firmly down onto the castor head rivet, before tightening it up (you may have to remove some of the burr on the inside of the tube before you try to push the fitting in). After making sure the weld on the inside of the tube is not excessive, align it with one of the slots down the outside of the adaptor fitting. Put the fitting into the tube all the way, then put some sideways pressure on to it to help the fittings grip, then tighten the stem bolt firmly. Tighten, but NOT over tight, or you will make it hard to remove later. It is advisable that any tube fitting on expanding stem castors be checked after the first 3 months, and then yearly to make sure the tube fitting is fully and firmly into the tube and the tightening nut is firmly but not over tightened.
Greasing: Grease in both the swivel head race and the wheel serve three purposes;
a) it prevents rusting of the balls and raceways; b) prevents galling; c) it reduces noise. It does not need a lot of grease to do this. Too much is unsightly and only attracts dust. A liberal smear is all that is needed. If you only have a few castors to grease, use your finger to apply the grease, then wipe off the excess with a rag or use a needle tip grease gun.
If you have many of them we suggest the following:• Turn the trolley upside down and remove the wheels.• Re-grease the head, either through the grease nipple if fitted, or by a needle tip fitting on a grease gun. You will
need to lift the seal on the heavier range of castors with a sharp pointed screwdriver. Two full squirts are usually adequate, but make sure enough grease gets through to the centre so it can descend to the bottom race.
• Check the wear of the axle bushing. Reuse if not heavily worn, otherwise replace. Smear about a teaspoon of grease along the inside of the wheel bearing with your finger, taking care to force the grease up into the rollers and reassemble.
• Be careful of the lip seal on the wheel as you reinsert the axle bushing into the roller bearing wheels. Make sure the axle bushing is clean as you reinsert it.
• Reassemble the wheel into the castor. Replace washer where fitted. A drop of Locktite High Assembly Strength solution on the axle thread is a good precaution.
• Use a No.2 bearing grease (not sodium based).
Wheel Bearings: Any slackness present in plain bearings or roller bearings can often be improved by replacing the axle bushing. If necessary, the plain or roller bearings can be replaced as well. Often simply re-greasing B type bearings is enough, though they can also be replaced if necessary. Sealed precision Q type bearings seldom wear sufficiently enough to need attention.

Preventative Maintenance Plans
Preventative Maintenance is well recognised by Serviced Equipment and is a fundamental part of our service delivery. Preventative Maintenance is directed towards two basic outcomes:
1) Ensure your mobile equipment is always performing at its peak
2) Reduce the total cost of ownership of your mobile equipment
It is with this in mind that we have continued to develop Preventative Maintenance Plans based on effectiveness rather than just a simple repetitive program.
The “old school” methodology of Preventative Maintenance dictates that all equipment should be serviced twice a year, once a month, 3 times a week etc. The fact is that all equipment is not the same. The more frequently a machine is used the more often it should be serviced. To determine the frequency of your Preventative Maintenance, it is critical to establish the application, environment and usage of the equipment. Once this has been established, Preventative Maintenance must then be scheduled and recorded accordingly.
The first step in a successful Preventative Maintenance program is to define what you actually want to achieve. A common expectation is that Preventative Maintenance will eliminate or significantly reduce overall Maintenance. The fact is that Preventative Maintenance is significantly cheaper than Remedial Maintenance and the goal has to be to convert as much Maintenance as possible from Remedial to Preventative. Furthermore, Preventative Maintenance can be scheduled for minimal impact on equipment uptime when compared to Remedial Maintenance where unexpected downtime can impact workflow and cause loss in productivity.
Serviced Equipment will start its service on a Bronze Level with two (2) Preventative Maintenance visits per annum and will work towards determining an effective Preventative Maintenance schedule based on your application and frequency of use.
Preventative Maintenance Methodology
In addition to a number of standard Preventative Maintenance checks, adjustments and procedures which need to be performed on every visit, the following steps are applied by Serviced Equipment to define a process for targeting specific Remedial Call-out reduction.
• Produce an accurate and detailed database of remedial maintenance activities
• Apply Regression Analysis techniques to identify the distribution of maintenance issues and develop an optimum Preventative Maintenance Strategy
• Prepare a detailed Preventative Maintenance schedule and checklist to implement this strategy Produce statistical data to facilitate analysis of the process Review Preventative Maintenance activities quarterly and adjust accordingly
This is the basis for a successful preventative maintenance implementation. Commercially, these activities ultimately must result in reduced overall maintenance costs and this will be the measuring stick for success.

Large wheels are easier to push.
The most common mistake when fitting castors is to fit wheel diameters too small for the real needs of the trolley and its user. The surveys, both in Australia and overseas, show again and again that small castors which get caught in uneven floors, ridges, gaps and holes, cause many injuries. Large diameter wheels, as against small wheels, will often add less than 10% to the cost of the trolley, and yet make that trolley 500% easier to use.
The guideline is for a minimum diameter of:
• 125mm (5”) for non-patient trolleys• 175mm (7”) for patient trolleys used indoors• 200mm (8”) for trolleys used out doors or for loads over
200kg (485lb) Smaller castors can still be used in restricted circumstances, for instance, use on lightweight equipment.
In general, castors of:
• 100mm (4”) size are recommended up to 120kg (265lb) trolley loads, but only on smooth floors and for short distances. They can be used on ward furniture, but not on catering or hospitality equipment.
• 75mm (3”) are even more restricted, being recommended only up to 100kg (220lb) trolley loads and again only on smooth floors without obstructions for short distances.
• 50mm (2”) are recommended only up to 80kg (175lb) trolley loads and for very short distances.
• If used on carpets a maximum load of 50kg (110lb) is appropriate.
The research is absolutely clear: large diameter wheels reduce forces for all trolley movements. Larger wheels:
• are easier to roll along the length of corridors, over ridges, e.g. at the edge of carpets, into lifts
• reduce vibration to patients and equipment and minimise shock transferring to the user’s arms from impacts
• are more robust/resistant to damage, remain functioning efficiently for longer than smaller wheels.
Consider also the other castor features that will effect push effort and ride comfort:
• tyre material• tyre width & profile• bearing type (in the wheel and the castor head race)• use of threadguards• type and number of castor brakes (including directional lock)• heavy trolley: fixed at front (eg. hospital beds)• light trolleys: fixed at rear (eg. shopping trolleys)

Trolley design principles - human factorsTrolley design fundamentals
A trolley should be:
Not too wide: Hand pushed trolleys should be at least 80mm (33/16”) narrower than the narrowest doorway. Towed trolleys should be 500mm (17/8”) narrower than the narrowest isle or doorway, and more if towed in a train.
Not too long: Trolley length should be between 1.5 to 2 times the width, otherwise it will not track smoothly around corners. If it must be long, you may need to experiment to find the best castor arrangement to suit your particular needs.
Not too high: A maximum height of 1400mm (4’7”) is recommended (including the goods being carried) to enable a clear line of sight.
Not too light: As a rough guide, the weight of the trolley is usually 15% to 20% of the load it is to carry. For the castor to function properly, the frame of the trolley must be strong enough to hold the castor head truly vertical so it can swivel freely (that is, the mounting plate must remain horizontal, or the stem must remain vertical), and the frame must not bend under the impacts that inevitably occur. The most common cause of castors not tracking properly is that the mounting has twisted off square.
Not too heavy: It is often safer, and more efficient, to divide the heavy load over a number of trolleys rather than concentrating it into one. Trolleys which are too heavy to move commonly remain unused, or people suffer back injuries.
Handle height & position
Optimal handle height for ‘average’ females is 910mm (3’) Optimal handle height for ‘average’ males is 990mm (3’)A good compromise handle height for mixed users is 950mm (3’11/2”). If a trolley is to be pulled (and most are at some time), the handle should be located far enough out from the trolley to ensure feet do not hit the trolley (approx. 400mm (1’3”)). This can be closer if the trolley has no shelves or tubes below 350mm (1’33/4”)
Trolley push effort
Occupational Health & Safety experts* recommend the following safety suggestions:Push efforts for trolleys, beds and mobile equipment
Initial force: • 167 - 216N (17 - 21kg) (37.5 - 46.2lb)
Sustained force for infrequent, short distances• 60 - 120N (6 - 12kg) (13.2 - 26.4lb)
Spring scales are a simple, accurate way to measure push effort. They are very cheap to buy and are available from most hardware stores. Simply clip the hook of the scale and pull until the trolley begins to move. If it takes less than 17kg (37.4lb) to get the trolley moving and less than 6kg (13.2lb) to keep it moving, then the trolley design and work load are best-practice.
Most trolleys actually measured in surveys of hospitals* were only within these recommendations if lightly loaded and used on smooth, hard floors. Often, as the trolleys were more heavily loaded up to their design capacity, they exceeded these recommendations, often doubling, and sometimes needing six times the recommended force. For example, simply moving from a hard, smooth floor to a carpeted area could more than double the force required.

Knee height: 600mm (2’)
Any shelves in the area less than 600mm (2’) should be infrequently used and for light obejcts (less than 10kg (22lb)). Maximum shelf depth in this area should be 450mm (1’6”).
Any shelves in the area between 600 & 800mm (2’ & 2’8”) should be infrequently used. Maximum shelf depth in this area should be 450mm (1’6”)
The area between 800 & 1100mm (2’8” & 3’8”) is the best area for people to frequently access heavier objects (more than 10kg (22lb)) - bending is minimised, and the lifting position is optimal. Maximum shelf depth in this area should be 800mm (2’8”)
Any shelves in the area between 1100 (3’8”) & 1400 (4’7”) should be infrequently used and for light objects (less than 10kg (22lb)). Maximum shelf depth in this area should be 300mm (1’)
No objects should block the clear line of sight above 1400mm (4’7”)

¹Brake EffectivenessThe ISO brake effectiveness tests are extremely harsh. They exist to ensure that brakes are ramp-capable by measuring brake traction force. However this greatly reduces the load capacity of the castor that is otherwise appropriate in safely complying with the ISO Static, Dynamic and Impact tests.
At Fallshaw, our approach is to rate the castor for normal use on flat surfaces. However if your application involves brake application on ramps or inclines then you MUST reduce the catalogue load rating by 0-40% in order to comply with the ISO brake effectiveness test (except in hospital bed castors which are fully compliant at published ratings).

Load castor to 1.0 x load capacity, then apply horizontal force of X% of load (3 times x 10 seconds) without brake allowing wheel to swivel. X=10% for tyre hardness >90 shore A X=15% for tyre hardness < 90 shore A.

Fallshaw’s factory and main stock holding is in Melbourne Australia. We also carry small stock holdings in Sydney and Brisbane. We have a national freight policy, whereby we subsidize freight prices from Melbourne to other Australian destinations so that there is no price disadvantage to receiving stock direct from Melbourne rather than from a local branch. This helps us to prevent double-handling and thereby reduce costs. This keeps our prices competitive for all our customers.
This Despatch Policy is the lead time to despatch an order that our sales people can commit to without making separate inquiries to the Production & Assembly Factory. We ensure we have sufficient stock and manufacturing capacity to reliably deliver against these lead times. We can often do better on request, but you’ll need to check first. We can also provide customized replenishment & stocking solutions for our Account Customers, when particular high-volume products are required on an ongoing basis (so goods are packed and ready to be called-up against a firm order).
• If an order is placed BEFORE 10am (Melbourne time), goods are available for collection/despatch from 3pm until 4pm the SAME day and anytime the day after.
• If an order is placed AFTER 10am (Melbourne time), goods are available for collection/despatch from 12pm until 4pm the NEXT day and anytime the day after that.

Innovative Mobility SolutionsWe are a single-source solution provider in mobile applications
We’re experts in mindful moving.
We can help our customers to improve safety, productivity and profit in any process that involves pushing, pulling or lifting:
We work with Healthcare, Commercial & Industrial OEMs to offer components or complementary products that either reduce the Lowest Total Cost of Ownership or provide enhanced product features that increase the saleability or value of their OEM equipment.
We work with Healthcare facilities to improve outcomes in their Push-pull processes and patient safety.
We work with Industrial end users to improve their Move-safe processes.
Innovative Mobility ProductsIntelligently Simple, Smart Product Design
Our mobility products are deceptively simple and elegant. The interface is intuitive and easy to use.
We design for form and function: with contemporary styling and without unnecessary components or material.
Our products are not constrained by traditional approaches.
We enjoy doing things differently: we think anew about material selection and manufacturing technology and we radically reinterpret mobility product design.
Our greatest compliment is when our customers forget about our mobility products - what do we mean by that?
• Bed movers should have control panels so intuitive that you don’t need to read the instruction manual or require more than 5 minutes of training.
• Furniture castors should be a considered part of furniture design, with colour, finish and style seamlessly blending to the point that the castors are just a part of the whole, rather than an afterthought.
• Castors used on trolleys should steer true with minimal push effort, great ride comfort and brakes that work effectively every time - when castors are designed well people are not conscious of how a trolley moves - it just happens.
• Serious working castors should have long product life with minimal and easy preventative maintenance - castors should not cause interruptions to equipment use due to high wear rates or breakdowns: they should soldier on unnoticed.
• When you choose Fallshaw castors or Electrodrive materials handling equipment, you can then forget about them – they are designed to perform.

About Us
77
It was then managed for forty-five years by Robert Fallshaw - under whose leadership we started making castors, developed our manufacturing expertise and built an enviable sales network to become one of the world’s leading castor companies. Regrettably Robert passed away in 2005.
Jo Fallshaw, Robert’s daughter, is now the Managing Director & owner and continues the tradition of developing innovative products, and manufacturing well-designed, cost effective, quality castors, delivered in-full and on-time with great service and technical support.
The company was founded by Percy Fallshaw who started making wheelchairs in 1920.
Core capability in competitive manufacturing with robust quality
Both Fallshaw & Electrodrive have engineering roots and proud histories of making products to world standards.
About Us
In 2012, Jo Fallshaw acquired Electrodrive, with its own proud history in design, manufacture and servicing of powered materials handling products. This has enabled Fallshaw and Electrodrive to combine product portfolios and expertise to expand into the broader portfolio of mobility solutions and products.
‘Quality basics’ of Fallshaw Core Castors: A 5-year warranty on the fork (3 years on the wheel); Corrosion resistance 3 times the Australian standard. Attention to detail and quality materials:
o Stainless steel brake springs (not heat-treated mild steel that can embrittle)
o Steel that is pickled and oiled (not black steel with associated streaky-plating);
o Coined ball tracks to prevent brinelling (stops sloppy castors as ball tracks wear-down)
o Head race rivets in high-quality steel that won’t elongate or snap under impact
o UV stabilizers in plastic parts so colours stay true and parts don’t become brittle ‘Quality basics’ of Electrodrive Powered Materials Handling:
All electro-hydraulic and electronic components are load and cycle tested in worst-case environments
Motors designed for continuous operation (S1 rating with venting to prevent heat build-up and alloy steel gearing for long life).
Sealed gel cell battery for transport without leakage and prevention of the risk of acid leakage
Easy access to core service components (clustered electronic components via easy access panels to fuses, motor controllers, short stop, hour metre etc.)
Programmed and programmable speed control so that start-up and slow-down speeds are safe, non- threatening and can be altered to suit particular applications and (of course) wheels & castors have high-abrasion tyres & quality bearings to ensure long product life!
78
The Fallshaw Wheel Factory
This is where we injection mould and assemble the wheels. Automation and a highly skilled workforce enable fast lead times and flexible processes.
Made In Australia
We manufacture the vast majority of our products in Australia (upwards of 85% overall at time of printing this catalogue).
The products that have more than 50% Australian content are flagged throughout this catalogue by the use of the ‘Made in Australia’ logo and asterisk (*) symbol.
Manufacturing capability
Our manufacturing plant is located in Australia 14km west of Melbourne’s city centre. We’re able to produce products at world competitive prices because we use intelligent technology, a highly skilled and productive workforce and lean manufacturing methodology to reduce costs.
