What does it mean to be an Indonesian?

Being an Indonesian means three things to me being proud of its diversity in ethnicities, culture and

languages; embracing Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity)

concept; working with other Indonesians for the prosperity of

the nation. The diversity is the enchanting factor that has made

the lives of 237 million of Indonesians colorful.

Embracing the Diversity

Promoting the Tolerance and Pride of Diversity through Education

1. Introduce various ethnic languages, songs, dance, culture and food through art class.

2. Tolerance and morality themes are embedded in Civic class from primary to higher education.

3. Singing national anthems that emphasize about unity in diversity in the morning assembly.

4. Discourse on “Diversity as a National Asset” and “Unity in Diversity.”

EXAMPLE OF TOLERANCE IN INDONESIAN CONTEXT Indonesia Constitution recognizes 5

religions (Islam, Christianity, Hindu, Buddhist and Confucianism) and guarantee the freedom to practice the religion in Indonesia.

Despite the fact that approximately 90 % of its 237 million population is Muslim, the holidays of those five religions are celebrated as national holidays in Indonesia.

The most popular tourist destination on the island of Java. largely thanks to its proximity to the temples of Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple, and Prambanan, a magnificent Hindu temple. Yogyakarta is known as a center of classical Javanese fine art and culture such as batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry and puppet shows. It is also famous in Indonesia as a center of higher education.
