What is ‘Whole School Approach’?

• Establish SNAG/School Council

• Support a Food Policy Action Plan

• Consult with parents/staff and pupils

• Work with cooks and caterers

• Consult with Heads and Senior Management

The School Food Plan

The School Food Plan reported on the state of school meals nationally in July 2013 and provided a set of actions for government, heads and Local Authorities.

• Mandatory Standards apply to ALL schools from January 2015

• Applies across the whole school day

• Backed by School Food Experts

• Designed to help school chefs/cooks use their creative skills

Challenges to increasing school meal take up

• School Food not seen as a priority

• Secondary schools more difficult to engage with than primaries

• Parent/carer school presence low

• Lack of space in dining halls

• Busy schools – focussed on Ofsted inspections and academic attainment

Healthy Schools Award Silver Once achieved Bronze Award • School identifies two health priorities to form part of an

improvement plan.

If healthy weight, nutrition or physical activity is chosen, the school will be helped by nutritionists or physical activity specialists to

develop an improvement plan Gold • Team will help school in delivery and evaluation of improvement

plan Schools will be provided with staff training, parent workshops,

activities with pupils and support with food provision
