INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND

Overview The IMF works to foster global growth and

economic stability. It provides policy advice and financing to members in economic difficulties and also works with developing nations to help them achieve macroeconomic stability and reduce poverty.

WorkingThe IMF's fundamental mission is to help

ensure stability in the international system. It does so in three ways: keeping track of the global economy and the economies of member countries; lending to countries with balance of payments difficulties; and giving practical help to members.

SurveillanceTechnical assistancelending

History 1944 - July IMF was conceived during the

United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference.

1945 - December 27, first 29 countries signed its Articles of Agreement.

2008 - April 7, to propose a new framework for the fund

2008 - April 27, shortfall in revenue sold part of gold reserves, MD, Dominique Strauss- Kahn welcomed the board’s decision of April 7

2009 - G-20 London summit, requirement for additional financial aid, G 20

leaders increased the supplemental cash tenfold to $500 billions.

2010 - October 23, the ministers of finance of G-20, agreed to reform IMF and

shift about 6 percent of the voting shares to major developing nations & countries with emerging markets

ROLE OF IMF

Collection and allocation of reserves.

Supervising the adjustable peg system.

Rendering advice to member countries on their international monetary affairs.

Promoting research in various areas of international economics and monetary economics.

Providing a forum for discussion and consultation among member countries.

SIGNIFICANCE OF IMF

Avoid manipulating exchange rates for unfair competitive advantage.

Provide the IMF with data about its economy.

Pursue policies that are conducive to reasonable price stability.
