ILLUMINOUS Illuminous was designed for the Pulp: Paper Art Party 2014, a one night art exhibit and concert at the Great Hall in Toronto. Hanging between the railing of the balcony and the main floor, Illuminous created an intimate space for exploration, conversations and interactions.
The project was created entirely from reused paper. No glues or other forms of mechanical fastening was required. The structure was purely a result of the weave. The project was voted the favourite of the exhibit by the other artists.
Mona Dai & Evan Brock
Three screens were constructed from folded strips of paper. Which were woven together with varying degrees density. A video installation was mapped onto the screens to emphasize the geometry and generate intricate shadows.
PARAMETRIC DESIGN METHOD
Create Hexagon Grid Find Centroids Overlay Screen Outline Draw Ellipses
Use To Select Points Tight Weave Pattern
Apply To Points Not Selected
Loose Weave Pattern
Apply To Points In Ellipses
Parametric design was used to allow for quick iterations of the screen design. By isolating specific points, one of two weave patterns, varying in density, can be applied to different areas of the screen. Once designed, the resulting model acts as blueprints for the weaving process. (Below)
A loose or a dense weave pattern was chosen for various parts of the screen. The loose pattern is used to open up view ports into the main space. This weave was positioned at strategic heights to accommodate a range of viewing positions. (Opposite page)
