This is Chris Bennett from Good Gyms presentation which he gave during the 'Ignite: For Good' evening mySociety hosted on 29th October 2014 as part of the Bath Digital Festival. Description: The story of GoodGym, how we have set up in Bristol, how it works and where it's going in the future.

Exercise has been designed out of our lives, particularly in cities. As a result, there is a demand for affordable, meaningful ways to exercise.

of people in the UK are members of gyms.11%

1/3 of people in the UK are overweight.

30% of us do enough exercise.

27% of gym members regularly attend.

1/10people over the age of 65 only see family or friends once a month.

13% of people over 65 in the UK say that they always or often feel lonely.

50% of people in the UK speak to their neighbours less than once a week.

For me, it was a new way to motivate myself.  Running for races, I’d done that.  It’s like the perfect combination. I can give something back, do something constructive with my running.

It’s very helpful. I’m often on my own. It’s bad when you’re living on your own. I’m lucky. It’s something for him to do and it’s something for me. I look forward to it.

GROUP RUNS:

We run and clear land for a community gardens, move rubble and tidy community centres. Group runs are regular, sociable and open to all abilities.
