This book is dedicated to all students of Queens Transition Center.

Hangikjöt (literally “hung meat”) is a traditional Icelandic food, which is smoked

lamb, usually served boiled in slices, warm or cold, served with potatoes and green peas.

Geyser is a natural hot spring that occasionally sprays water and steam above

the ground.

Iceland is an island in the north Atlantic Ocean, east of Greenland.

Icelandic is the official language of Iceland.

The majority of the population of Iceland is Lutheran. Lutheranism is a major branch of

Christianity that identifies with the teachings of the sixteenth-century German reformer Martin

Luther.

Rimur is Icelandic folk music.

Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland.

A Scandinavian Cross flag is a type of flag that has a cross that is off-center;

the vertical bar is closer to the hoist side.

The Yule Lads, or Yulemen, (Icelandic: jólasveinarnir) are the Icelandic santa

clauses.
